A Positive View on Aging May Help You Live Longer

September 11, 2023 by Karla A in Independent Living

Social scientists say “aging gracefully” should not be just an expression but rather something people should take to heart as they enter their senior years. Maintaining a positive attitude as we age can help us better weather the many ups and downs we encounter along the journey.

A comprehensive study from the Yale School of Epidemiology and Public Health followed 660 seniors aged 50 years and older and found those who held a more positive view on growing older lived on average 7.5 years longer than those with a negative view. Researchers added negative views on old age may even make someone more susceptible to developing the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. However, they report if a person shifts to a more positive way of thinking, the adverse outcome may be mitigated.

Dr. Manfred Diehl, professor of human development and family studies at Colorado State University, advises people on how to develop a more positive approach to aging. His first recommendation is to be physically active at least 30 minutes each day. Then he says to keep your brain active and challenge it by continuing to learn new things. Other tips include: get enough sleep each night, stop smoking, avoid excessive alcohol, maintain a healthy weight and follow a healthy diet. Dr. Diehl says a healthy social life is important and to nurture a healthy relationship with your spouse, family and friends.

Another positive step is to get regular medical check-ups and screenings. Additionally, protect your mental health by taking the time to relax, unwind and to have fun.

Let us introduce you to MorningStar at Golden Ridge, a 55+ community offering independent living, assisted living and memory care.  Centrally located in Peoria and minutes from Glendale, we are convenient to health care facilities as well as shopping, restaurants and other services. Are You at Risk for Shingles?

January 12, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk for getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the doctorate of occupational therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone the chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a wash cloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

The MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community is a true home where residents can comfortably age in place. We have 65 suites for assisted living and 35 secure suites devoted to the care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. For active seniors looking for a carefree lifestyle, we offer 38 Casitas tucked into their own private neighborhood. Expert Weigh-in on How to Tell the Difference between the Flu or a Cold

December 03, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living, healthy senior, Healthy Seniors, Morningstar Goldernridge

Now that we are fully in flu season, you may find yourself wondering if you have a common cold or the flu. Experts say there are some clues to help ensure you get the right treatment.

While certain symptoms overlap, there are some differences. In both cases you may experience a cough, sore throat and a stuffy, running nose. However if you have a fever, chills, and body and muscle aches, it is probably the flu. Bad headaches and fatigue are another indication you most likely have more than the common cold. Children with the flu may also suffer from vomiting and diarrhea.

As the flu can have more serious consequences, another way to determine if it is the flu or a cold is how the illness starts. The flu hits a person hard and fast, while a cold starts out much slower. For example, a person may start out a day feeling just fine but from the time they leave work to when they get home, they may become feverish with muscle aches throughout their body.

Doctors stress the importance of getting an annual flu shot as every year adults and children are hospitalized with the flu. Complications include pneumonia and bacterial infections, with some of the worst cases leading to death. Both the flu and colds are spread through droplets spraying into the air when someone coughs, and can spread from contaminated surfaces that come into contact with the droplets. Most flu vaccines are free or low cost with insurance; however, if you are uninsured or underinsured there are options available.

A Senior Community with a Passion for Serving Seniors

November 29, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living, healthy senior, assisted living peoria

The MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community’s mission is to provide all the services needed to support and enhance residents’ physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing. As one of the top assisted living communities in the Phoenix area, residents are provided with 24/7 care managers, access to licensed nurses, medication managers, care plan reviews, scheduled health and wellness evaluations. Services also include scheduled physician visits, pharmacy services, transportation to doctor appointments and more. Wellness programs and activities are designed to keep residents as busy as they like.

It isn’t just our belief that these kinds of services, amenities and programs provide a higher quality of life for many older adults, but in fact, a number of studies have shown this to be true. Research finds “seniors in retirement communities may be living longer and stronger, meaning they become frail less quickly than those who remain in their own home. Residents of independent retirement communities enjoy better health and could potentially live longer because of it.” Moreover, several studies report that because of the support services, older adults with multiple chronic health problems in senior living communities are less likely to require high levels of hospitalization as compared to their peers who live alone.

Experts believe the enhanced health of those living in retirement communities may also have something to do with the stress-free lifestyle that includes no longer needing to maintain a home. Meals are another part of MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s luxury amenities, so residents just relax and enjoy being served restaurant-style in our community dining room. To help you stay in your best shape, we provide exercise classes, a saline swimming pool with hot tub, and fitness center.

Please visit the MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s website to learn more about our “passion to serve seniors.” When you are there, use our convenient online links to inquire about availability and pricing or set up a tour. MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s trusted senior living options include independent living, assisted living, and memory care in Peoria. Please ask about our Move-in Specials.

The Pandemic May Have Strengthened Our Relationship with Nature

January 25, 2021 by Karla A

A recent survey by the University of Vermont reports people have gotten out in nature much more during the pandemic than in prior times. The online survey found that 3,200 Vermonters between May 3 and May 19, 2020, who were at the time under the State’s strictest quarantine rules, not only got out in nature more but felt better for doing it.

As many as 70 percent of participants reported they were walking more, and 64% percent said they were spending more time wildlife watching. Relaxation accounted for 58% of the reason people got out in nature, and taking photos or creating art increased by as much as 54 percent.

All told, 60 percent of those surveyed said they felt that simply getting out in nature improved their mental health and wellbeing. While 29 percent said they got out mainly for exercise, another 29 percent reported appreciating nature’s beauty and 22 percent felt connect to something bigger than themselves.

The Harvard Publishing Health journal also recently reported on an emerging scientific field called ecotherapy, which finds a strong link between time spent in nature and a reduction in stress, anxiety, and depression. In a 2015 study, researchers report that “those who did a nature walk had lower activity in the prefrontal cortex, a brain region that is active during rumination — defined as repetitive thoughts that focus on negative emotions.” So no more excuses; head out to a local park and start enjoying nature as it is not only good for your physical health but your mental health.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community is situated on 8.8 acres and offers seniors a welcoming, comfortable home for carefree retirement years. In addition to independent living and assisted living, we also provide compassionate, holistic memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases. We also want new residents to know that they will have priority access to the COVID vaccine. Please visit our website to learn more.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve. Perform Hands-on CPR to the Beat of a Favorite Song

August 31, 2020 by Karla A

If you haven’t kept up with new guidelines regarding CPR, the American Heart Association (AHA) says the first step when someone has stopped breathing is to call 911 or have someone else call, and use simple, direct words such as "Heart stopped. I need help."  Now begin chest compressions, which help to move the blood around the body.  Several years ago, the AHA stopped recommending doing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation immediately as “in the seconds before a heart stops, the person takes a big deep breath and fills their lungs with air.”

Chest compressions on an adult or teen should be done by putting the heel of one hand on the breastbone of the chest and the other hand on top of it.   Now start pressing down at least two full inches or more (not less) hard and fast, about 100 to 120 pushes per minutes.

Experts suggest several songs in a variety of genres to pace your compressions by.  For county music fans, recommendations include Blake Shelton's "All about Tonight" or Johnny Cash’s "Ring of Fire."  There are songs for fans of Lady Gaga like "Just Dance," Dianna Ross’ fans with “Ain't No Mountain High Enough," or "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees.

While anyone can do CPR, getting certified by an American Red Cross CPR class gives you the extra confidence to response quickly as well as information regarding rescue breathing.  Once you complete the course, you are certified for two years but to keep yourself up-to-date, it is suggested you take a refresher course before your certificate expires.

At the MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community, we offer independent living, assisted living and memory care.  For assisted living and memory care residents, our 24/7 care managers are certified in both CPR and First Aid.  In addition all team members, regardless of their role, complete three foundational one-day training sessions that include Radiance (our culture and customer service initiative); and Lavender Sky (our dementia care philosophy and approach to programming).  We also provide continuing education through in-services and online video training.  Our Med Techs (QMAPs) are also trained in medication administration.  Visit our website to learn more about our loving community.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  We are in a warm, loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities.  Please visit our website to learn more about unsurpassed independent living & assisted living in the Peoria area.

Many Falls are Preventable

May 15, 2020 by Karla A

We have all heard stories or may have had an older relative take a fall that lead to serious injuries, hospitalization, or in the worst case, a fatality.  In fact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the fatal fall rate for people 65 years and older jumped 31 percent from 2007 to 2016, making falls the leading cause of injury-related death among people in this age group.  Falls are so common in the elderly that every 11 seconds an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) says that many falls are preventable and publishes a one-page guide called “Take Control of Your Health: 6 Steps to Prevent a Fall.”  Their first tip is to find a balance and exercise class that is specifically designed to help older adults built strength and improve their balance and flexibility.

NCOA also recommends talking to your doctor about your fall threat.  Ask if any medications you are taking have side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, or other issues that could increase your risk for fall.  Moreover be sure to share any recent falls you may have had with your healthcare provider as well as your family.

Fall prevention includes having your vision and hearing tested annually.  If you need stronger glasses, get them and be sure to wear them.  The next step is to do a survey of your home both inside and out to ensure you do not have unsafe areas that increase the likelihood of a fall.  Search the Internet for a checklist of things to look for in your home to improve safety.  The NCOA suggests enlisting the aid of your family to help you keep your home safe for everyone.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, our senior living community is designed to accommodate our residents’ limitations.  All of our spacious private suites come with wall-to-wall carpeting, fully handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems.  We also provide a 24/7 care staff and a full-time licensed nurse.  In addition, residents are offered plenty of opportunities to get moving with exercise classes, a fitness room, and our walking club.

Please see our website for more information on our community as well as our coordinated defense in the fight against the coronavirus to ensure the health of both residents and team members.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Keep in Touch During the Coronavirus Epidemic

April 23, 2020 by Karla A

If you have elderly loved ones who are living alone or in an assisted living facility that has halted visits, the AARP offers several things you can do to help them stay socially connected and avoid feeling isolated.  Remember one of the most important things we can do is to let them know they are loved and missed.

The easiest way you can do this is through frequent phone calls, but also don’t forget other ways of communicating such as sending a letter or greeting card through the snail mail reminding them you are thinking of them.  Include the kids by having them draw a picture for grandma or grandpa or if they are old enough, have them also write a letter.

It definitely makes it more personal to stay in touch if your parent has a computer or a smart device that lets you facetime or skype on a regular basis and the AAPR has some ideas of how to use video-calling to keep it fun.  One suggestion if your kids are young is to arrange to have grandma or grandpa read books to them over a video-call (if they do not have suitable books, go online and send them some).  Or if your child is learning to read, have them read to their grandparents.

Another thing you can do is schedule a meal to be delivered to them from a local carry out place or from a service such as Grubhub, and settle down and enjoy sharing a meal with them while video chatting.  In addition, conversation starters can include watching the same movie or documentary and then spend time talking about it, or setting up a game or chessboard and playing the game together over the phone.

The MorningStar of Beaverton assisted living and memory care community offers trusted senior living our families depend on.  Our comprehensive, compassionate care includes services and programming that support the whole person: body, mind and spirit.  Please visit our website for availability and pricing or give us a call with any questions.  We offer families peace of mind knowing their loved one is receiving the very best care.

MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care of Beaverton represents the very best in senior living with our distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We are dedicated to providing a true home for residents amidst a beautiful, serene setting by creating a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Get Moving to Improve Your Health

April 15, 2020 by Karla A

At MorningStar of Arvada, we recognize that daily exercise is essential to the wellbeing of our residents.  Research backs up that claim as the National Institute of Health (NIA) explains that seniors who stay physically active and regularly exercise receive long-term health benefits.  They state that, “it can even improve the health for some older people who already have diseases and disabilities.”

Taking part in physical activities such as walking your dog, using the stairs, or gardening as well as regular formal exercises such as weight training, tai chi, or aerobics classes are both beneficial to seniors.  Studies have found an increase in mental capacity and a slower mental decline in older adults who stay physically active as it can help to increase blood flow to all parts of the body including the brain. The NIA also states that exercise may delay or prevent diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and colon cancer, and help to reduce death and hospitalization rates.

In addition, physical activities and exercises may help to improve healing in seniors, provide better balance and reduce falls, and enhance their overall quality of life.  Furthermore, the research finds that it is never too late to start exercising to receive the benefits.

Another thing to remember is that you do not need to have full mobility to start exercising as there are many exercises designed to overcome individual limitations.  Activities should include modified stretching exercises to increase flexibility, cardiovascular exercises to raise the heart rate and increase endurance, and weight training to build muscle and bone mass and improve balance.

At MorningStar of Arvada, our residents have many opportunities to keep moving with basic fitness classes as well as chair yoga, strength training, sit and be fit, a health club, swimming and other special activities.  Our community offers 112 independent and assisted living suites that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. In addition, we offer 29 secure memory care suites in our Reflections Neighborhood for residents with dementia-related diseases.  Please see our website to learn more.

MorningStar of Arvada represents the finest in senior living with our unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve, we provide a true home for residents.  We invite you to schedule a tour to see firsthand the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada CO offers.
