Foods You Don’t Need to Wash before You Eat

If you have concerns about food safety, and many of us do, it can be confusing on what foods needs to be washed before eaten. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) weighs in on the issue regarding foods that do not need to be washed at home, and in some cases, may be detrimental to do so.

With all of the media attention regarding bird flu, some people wonder if we should be washing our store-bought eggs. According to the USDA, we should not wash eggs from the grocery store as commercial eggs are already washed. Experts explain,” Bloom,” the natural coating on just-laid eggs that helps prevent bacteria from permeating the shell, is removed by the commercial washing process. It is replaced by a light coating of edible mineral oil, which restores protection for long-term home storage of eggs.”  If fact they warn that washing eggs at home could increase the risk of cross-contamination, especially if the shell becomes cracked. 

Another common food we buy is pre-washed salad mixes. Again, the USDA says it is not necessary to wash pre-washed or ready-to-eat produce as they are safe to eat as packaged. If you do decide to wash it, they warn about cross-contamination and to take care to avoid unclean surfaces or utensils that have come into contact with raw meat, poultry or seafood, or their juices. A tip for washing fresh fruits and vegetables is to hold them under running tap water to remove any dirt. For veggies or fruits with a firm skin, scrub with a clean brush. Avoid using detergent soaps or commercial produce washes.  

Most canned foods do not need to be washed. However, when using canned beans; follow the recipe recommendation in terms of rinsing. Rinsing rice before cooking can help reduce rice’s arsenic content as well as remove the surface starch for a lighter, fluffier rice. If you are cooking risottos, paella or rice pudding, skip the rinsing step as you want the extra surface starch to remain on the rice. Quinoa from the supermarket is typically already rinsed and dried before packaged. Check the label to see if it says pre-rinsed or if it recommends rinsing.

Things to “Not Do” at Your Next Doctor Appointment

The actual time spent with our doctor during an appointment is short. Statistics show the average time a doctor spends with a patient during a visit is around 18 minutes, but does vary depending on the specialty and nature of the patient’s needs. 

With that kind of timeline, a patient can optimize their visit by following some tips from experts on what not to do. The first is to not go to the appointment unprepared. Rather think about what information you want to impart to the doctor beforehand, and write it down so you don’t forget. Include a written list of all your medications and dosage as well as allergies, medical diagnoses, past procedures and surgeries, and any relevant family history.  

It is also a mistake to come in with a “self-diagnosis.” Dr. Danielle K. Miller, DNP, MSN, BSN, RN, Founder of The Pivot Nurse, Inc., explains this can cause a bias with the doctor spending time going down the wrong path. Instead, be ready to tell the doctor about your symptoms, when they started, their frequency and how or if they have changed. Describe any patterns you may have noticed.  

Another thing to not do is to downplay symptoms that have brought you to the doctor. This can cause a delay in medical tests, delayed treatment, or missed early signs of a condition such as heart disease, infection, or neurological issues.

Experts say do not wait until the end of your appointment to mention the reason you came in. Dr. Miller reminds patients to remember they know their bodies’ and are the best advocate for explaining what seems to be off. Lastly, one of the big mistakes patients make is to leave the office without understanding the doctor’s orders. One example is not being clear on the next step such as assuming your doctor will schedule an x-ray or blood test and instead expecting you need to set it up. One way to ensure you have a clear idea of the next step is to repeat it back to the doctor before you leave.

Maintain Flexibility Through Stretching Exercises

Health professionals say it is important to incorporate stretching exercises into your routine, especially the older we get as our flexibility naturally decreases. As joints become stiff, and tendons and ligaments tighten up, we become more susceptible to injuries as well as chronic pain and poor posture. In fact, studies show men’s flexibility drops sharply at around 70 years of age. 

Stretching exercises are easy to learn, relatively easy to do, and should not take more than five to ten minutes. Urvashi Chogle, a physical therapist at Harvard-affiliated Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, says the shoulders, hips, knees, and spine lose the most flexibility.  He explains, “This makes many everyday movements more difficult, such as reaching overhead, squatting, twisting, and bending over.” 

Of course before you begin any new stretching exercises, you need to consult with your healthcare provider. He or she may have suggestions on how to safely get started or direct you to your local community senior center or other organizations for classes. Additionally, the Internet has a lot of information on how seniors can improve their flexibility with stretching exercises done in a chair, standing up, or if you can, on the floor. Regardless of your level of fitness, these exercises should help improve your range of motion, flexibility and joint stiffness.

The Impact of Alzheimer's Disease on Family Members

The Alzheimer’s Association explains Alzheimer’s is a disease that not only affects the individual but robs family members of their loved one. As the disease progresses, it takes away more and more of the person and the family begins to mourn the loss. While grief has different phases including denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance in no particular order; universally shared by most families is unease about what the future holds and what to expect next. 

Hope is a powerful human emotion so denying the disease is a coping mechanism for some as they try to convince themselves their loved one will get better or not reach the level of devastation experienced by many suffering from the disease. Others may refuse to recognize the changed behavior and make excuses for it. 

Spouses and significant others may experience anger as they feel abandoned by the person and frustrated at their inability to do anything about it. They may also feel resentment and overwhelmed by caregiving duties but experts say it is important to be honest with yourself. Recognize you need more support and ask for it.  

Other feelings of grief include guilt. A person may worry they have not done enough or are not visiting often enough. While unrealistic, spouses may feel guilty they are still able to enjoy life while their wife or husband is no longer able. If a caregiver is not getting enough support, they may even experience thoughts about wishing the person would die or go away. The Alzheimer’s Association says it is important to get the help and support you need and to accept your feelings and remember grief is part of the journey.

Even a Few Minutes a Day Exercising is Beneficial

Studies continue to show things like getting enough sleep, following a healthy diet, quitting smoking, managing stress, challenging ourselves mentally and staying physically fit is beneficial for our overall health. Now a study finds it doesn’t actually take a large amount of physical exercise each day to protect our brain health as we age. The article was published in the journal, Age and Ageing, which showed that as little as 5 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily can help keep the aging brain healthy.

Experts explain as we grow older, the outer layer of our brain known as the cortex becomes thinner and the brain typically starts producing lower levels of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, which can contribute to cognitive decline. Audrey M. Collins, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Neuroscience at the AdventHealth Research Institute in Florida, explains, “Physical activity is a lifestyle behavior that may play a role in not only the prevention and attenuation of cognitive decline, but the promotion of cognitive function in late life.” 

The study found participants who did moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily had significantly better brain processing speed, short-term memory and better executive function, which is the ability to plan and focus. However, Collins says the study also discovered the biggest cognitive gain came from those participants who changed their daily behavior from not doing any moderate to vigorous physical exercise to exercising at least five minutes a day.  

Gary Small, MD, chair of psychiatry for Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey and author of more than a dozen books on brain health and aging, commented on the study by saying it is important for people to exert themselves enough to push the heart and lungs to pump oxygen and nutrient to the brain. It should also be reassuring to people they do not have to become triathletes to maintain good health.

Digital Devices may be Good for Our Brain

For the last couple of decades, scientists have been concerned about the harm of using too much technology and that it could have a negative impact on brain function. Dr Manfred Spitzer, a German neuroscientist and psychiatrist, coined the term “digital dementia” in a 2012 book written to address what he saw as a problem. Current studies show people of all ages are on an electronic device as they spend time scrolling the internet or social media on average 2 hours and 24 minutes a day.  

Recently, a new study published in the journal, Nature Human Behaviour, reports older adults who routinely use electronic devices like a cell phone, tablet or computer may be protecting themselves from cognitive decline as well as reducing their risk of dementia. Researchers looked at data from over 136 studies involving cognitive or dementia diagnosis information pertaining to more than 400,000 participants with an average age of 69 years old.  

The study found a correlation of a 58% lower risk of cognitive impairment in seniors using digital technology. The lead author of the study, Michael K. Scullin, PhD, associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University, explains, “It’s important to note that the data didn’t go in the opposite direction.” He adds, “The great fear was that using computers, the Internet, and smartphones could lead to worse rates of cognitive impairment. There wasn’t compelling evidence for that in any of the studies we meta-analyzed.”

Even when controlling factors such as education, socioeconomic status, general health, lifestyle factors, or baseline cognition, ninety percent of the studies showed digital technology was linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline. Researchers say using our devices challenges our brains and helps us continue to learn new things. They also make it easy to stay in touch with family and friends, and socializing is another way to reduce the risk for dementia.

Untreated Sleep Apnea Increases Risk of Serious Health Issues

The US News & World Report says approximately 1 in 3 adults are believed to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They explain the condition causes a person to momentarily stop breathing at intervals throughout the night and interrupting their sleep. 

Pulmonologist and section head of sleep medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver, Dr. Sheila Tsai, explains, “A person’s airway either partially collapses or completely closes (obstructs) during sleep.” She says episodes can be frequent throughout the sleep cycle and cause drops in oxygenation. While the person may only awake briefly as they struggle to breathe, their sleep is fragmented and non-restorative as it infers with REM, the deep, restful stage of sleep. 

Common causes of OSA are obesity and age, and The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine estimates as many as 80 percent of people suffering from OSA are undiagnosed. The condition typically causes the person to snore loudly, interrupted with gasps, hesitations and snorts. They may wake up feeling unrefreshed and sleepy during the day, or complain of headaches. OSA can additionally cause other sleep disorders to become worse like restless-leg syndrome and sleep walking.  

Doctors say OSA is a serious, but treatable condition and it is important to seek medical care. A sleep study or test done in a clinic setting or even at home is the best way to diagnose the condition. Untreated OSA can put a person at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other problems.

The Connection between Our Immune System & Aging

Our immune system is similar to an engine. As we age, our parts start to slow down and show wear and tear. The body no longer runs as smoothly or as robust as it used to, making it harder to fight off infections. Growing old makes it more difficult to recover from strenuous activity or bounce back from illness. A recent article in the US News & World Report likens it to an older smart phone not holding its charge as well as it once did. 

Experts explain the immune system is made up of two parts referred to as innate immunity and adaptive immunity. Our innate immune system is the body’s faster response to pathogens and relies on physical barriers like the skin or mucous membranes, and special cells that digest germs and/or destroy infected cells. Our adaptive immune system is responsible for a slower, more specific defense against pathogens using antibody B cells to destroy the pathogens; or T cells to coordinate and kill infected cells. 

Dr. Austin Perlmutter, a Seattle-based, board-certified internal medicine physician explains aging brings about many changes. He states, “The most prominent of them is the development of what is called ‘immunosenescence’, a progressive state of worsening of the overall immune system function.” Not only do the elderly have fewer immune cells but the ones they have are fairly worn out. This means seniors are more likely to have chronic inflammation as well as a weaker response to infections; and unfortunately, the protections vaccines offer.  

Experts say while aging inevitably affects our immune system, we can do things to support and strengthen it throughout our lives such as getting routine vaccinations and following a healthy lifestyle. The National Council on Aging reports that just as regular preventive medical screenings, vaccinations and dental exams are vital to maintaining our best health, so is protecting our social and mental health. Studies show older adults who say they feel isolated are affected in several negative ways. 

Researchers explain there is a connection between those who say they have a good social life with a longer life span. Studies indicate it may be because these are people who appear to handle stress better; something that is linked to cardiovascular disease.

Studies also find seniors who report having a better quality social life were more likely to regularly exercise. Another concerning finding is that isolation is linked to an increase in a person’s risk for anxiety and depression, which are both linked to a higher risk for dementia.  

Many seniors living alone have lost a spouse or other close family members and friends and feel very alone. Experts say if this is your situation, they suggest checking with your local senior center, church or library about interesting activities they may sponsor; or look into joining a book club, gardening club or other hobby groups. If you are an animal lover, think about adopting a pet as they provide companionship and a sense of purpose. Shoulder Blade Pain

The shoulder blade, referred to as the scapulae, consists of triangular bones on the back of the shoulders; and are attached to the top of the arm at the shoulder joint and the clavicle (at the acromioclavicular joint). As the area is surrounded by muscles, tendons and ligaments, doctors say determining the cause of shoulder blade pain can be difficult. 

The Medical News Today website explains shoulder blade pain can be caused by a number of conditions including a heart attack. Other causes may be sleeping in an uncomfortable position, strain from lifting a heavy object, and physical trauma. 

Examples of bone or joint problems are pain caused by a fall or accident that results in a fracture. Other bone and joint issues include degenerative conditions like arthritis, bursitis or frozen shoulders. One type of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis primarily affects the spine and can cause pain and inflammation in the surrounding area including the shoulders. 

Shoulder pain that arises beneath the bone that forms the “roof” of the shoulder (the acromion) is often referred to as shoulder impingement. Experts say the cause is often unknown and in about 50% of people, the pain gets better after around 6 months. Treatment includes pain medication, cooling the area and physical therapy. 

Muscle and tendon problems causing shoulder pain include the rotator cuff, muscle strain and overuse of the area. The rotator cuff is a set of muscles that helps the arm and shoulder move and injuries are common including tears to one of the cuff tendons. Treatment includes taking over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or pain medications to minimize swelling and discomfort, applying ice packs and physical therapy. In some cases your doctor may recommend surgery.

Experts say it is important to remember you are not alone. Over six million people in the US are living with Alzheimer’s and millions more know someone with the disease. Alzheimer’s five distinct stages include: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI); Mild; Moderate; Severe; and Very Severe. Symptoms can vary from person to person but the various stages of Alzheimer’s disease have some common characteristics and it helps to be prepared.

According to recent statistics, there are an estimated 101,000 centenarians (age 100+) making up 0.03% of the population; and experts expect that number to quadruple over the next three decades. Compare that to just 2,300 centenarians estimated to be alive during the 1950 census. Interestingly, Japan has the greatest number of people in their 100s, at 146,000 with the US holding the second spot. China has (60,000), India (48,000) and Thailand (38,000) to round out the top five.

Experts say staying physically active is beneficial for overall fitness as well as extending our lifespan. Many centenarians report they routinely engage in physical activity such as walking, gardening, or participating in community activities. Studies link staying active to maintaining strength, flexibility, and cognitive function, which all contribute to not only a longer life but a healthier one.

To learn the secrets to a long life, Today.com interviewed several including some that are still driving, working and even getting married. One 100 year old recommends not retiring if you are happy working. In fact she reports to work every day at her family’s furniture store. The woman still drives, and once she is home, cooks her meals from scratch of which many of the vegetables and herbs come from her own garden. In terms of diet, she says she doesn’t eat fried or fast food, avoids alcohol and makes getting a good night’s sleep a priority. 

Another 102 year old woman passes along advice that includes the philosophy of having “no regrets,” and recommends not wasting time looking back but rather looking forward to the things you want. She still works three days a week and her health routine includes walking every day and staying positive.   

Others interviewees said to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and avoid foods high in sugar. There were many who commented on the benefits of a positive attitude, and said they try to bring joy and love into their lives. The centenarians also agreed expressing gratitude and spending time with loved ones is important to a fulfilling, long life.

It examined the decision-making process including priorities, hopes, concerns, and questions of those surveyed as well as some of the interviews.  

The first topic the survey looked at is whether a senior’s current home is in reality the best place to retire in. Age Wave said results show a move to senior living can in many cases provide more freedom, more convenience, better care and less worry for seniors. 

One sentiment expressed by many in retirement communities is that they appreciate the fact that if their health needs change, or those of their spouse, the community is equipped to deal with the needs without necessitating a move. Also if they need to see a doctor, they like that they can just schedule a ride to their appointment. 

Another myth is people fear they will no longer have purpose in their life in a senior community. However, according to the Age Wave survey, people in CCRC reported at this time of life perhaps there is a better purpose than doing household chores. Residents expressed their satisfaction in the freedom to explore new pathways – “from learning how to paint, volunteering in the community, becoming an expert on healthy cooking, authoring a book, reaching new levels of fitness, to developing rewarding new friendships.”

Happiness not only makes us feel good but may also be good for us. Research shows happiness is an important component to maintaining physical health, and is linked to lowering the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Being happy can help us eat better, maintain a normal body weight and allow us to get a better night’s sleep. It can encourage people to be more active and reduce stress.  In fact, there is an understanding that the mind-body connection is stronger than we thought and unmanaged stress can lead to or exacerbate many health conditions. 

Don’t feel like you are all that happy? No problem. Experts say there are things we can do to cultivate happiness, and improve our outlook on life as well as our physical health. Some of these things include forming and maintaining uplifting connections, practicing gratitude and mindfulness, and taking the time to appreciate the beautiful moments of life. 

Expressing gratitude has been shown to be an excellent deterrent to depression and anxiety. Dr. Robert Emmons, a renowned researcher in the science of gratitude, says, “Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives.” He adds it encourages feelings of joy, love and optimism and reduces feelings of envy and resentment. One way to cultivate gratitude is to daily journal at least one thing you are grateful for as writing it down appears to reinforce your feelings.

The practice of mindfulness is another way to bring more happiness into our life. It helps cultivate a deeper connection with our inner self, and improves mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. The National Institute of Health explains practicing mindfulness is as easy as breathing through your nose to a count of 4, holding for 1 second and then exhaling through the mouth to a count of 5. Healthy Lifestyle Tips for MCI Management

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can be a precursor to dementia but does not always progress to dementia. Medical professionals report 10% to 40% of MCI cases go on to become dementia, and a good percentage of those become Alzheimer’s disease. On the positive side, research shows as many as 30-40% of people with MCI get better. As with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, there is no cure for MCI but there are some therapies which have been approved to treat early Alzheimer’s to slow disease progression.  Doctors also say there are steps we can take to mitigate or minimize the effects of MCI. 

MCI is just as its name suggests. The impairment is mild and does not affect a person’s ability to care for themselves or take away their independence. Steps a person should take to protect their cognitive health include quitting smoking and moderating or eliminating alcohol consumption. If you do have hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol levels or diabetes, it is important to treat these conditions and manage them through medications, diet and healthy lifestyle habits. 

Other things you can do to thwart, delay or minimize the effects of MCI are to maintain a healthy weight and exercise, which is good for our brains as well as our bodies. Avoid junk food, highly processed foods and foods high in sodium; and reduce the amount of red meat in your diet. Isolation has also been linked to a higher risk for dementia, so it is important to stay social.
