Happiness Has Positive Effects on Health and Well-Being

April 11, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

Happiness not only makes us feel good but may also be good for us. Research shows happiness is an important component to maintaining physical health, and is linked to lowering the risk of stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Along with better health, people, who report they are happy, tend to live longer.

Being happy can help us eat better, maintain a normal body weight and allow us to get a better night’s sleep. It can encourage people to be more active and reduce stress.  In fact, there is an understanding that the mind-body connection is stronger than we thought and unmanaged stress can lead to or exacerbate many health conditions.

Don’t feel like you are all that happy? No problem. Experts say there are things we can do to cultivate happiness, and improve our outlook on life as well as our physical health. Some of these things include forming and maintaining uplifting connections, practicing gratitude and mindfulness, and taking the time to appreciate the beautiful moments of life.

Expressing gratitude has been shown to be an excellent deterrent to depression and anxiety. Dr. Robert Emmons, a renowned researcher in the science of gratitude, says, “Gratitude is literally one of the few things that can measurably change people’s lives.” He adds it encourages feelings of joy, love and optimism and reduces feelings of envy and resentment. One way to cultivate gratitude is to daily journal at least one thing you are grateful for as writing it down appears to reinforce your feelings.

The practice of mindfulness is another way to bring more happiness into our life. It helps cultivate a deeper connection with our inner self, and improves mental health by reducing stress and anxiety. The National Institute of Health explains practicing mindfulness is as easy as breathing through your nose to a count of 4, holding for 1 second and then exhaling through the mouth to a count of 5. Repeat often. The Internet has other techniques for mindfulness practices.

MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge is a welcoming place with the promise of new friendships as well as the leisure to pursue new interests or rekindle old ones. Residents enjoy all-day, restaurant-style dining; luxury amenities, and wellness programs and activities designed to engage seniors mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides compassionate, experienced care. MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Take the Time for Self-Care

March 17, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

Most of us experience some level of stress whether it is just occasionally or something that bothers us on a more frequent basis. If you want to know how to handle stress better, Dr. Shalu Ramchandani, an integrative medicine specialist at the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, recommends following good health habits. These include eating a predominantly plant-based diet, exercising on a regular basis, sleeping at least seven hours a night and staying socially connected.

Another beneficial habit to reduce stress is to practice self-care, which is simply taking time out of your day to do something that makes you feel good. Experts recommend one of the top self-care habits is to practice mindfulness. Spending too much time on things such as problem-solving and negative thoughts can make you more likely to experience stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression. Practicing mindfulness with breathing exercises, guided imagery and other practices can help you direct your attention away from this kind of thinking and relax the body and mind.

Self-care habits can include taking a walk out in nature, practicing yoga, taking a bath or doing some stretches before bedtime. Some people feel a sense of calm using aromatherapy with scents known to be calming like lavender, rose, bergamot and frankincense. Lighting a room using candles or getting a massage can also be effective.

Research finds watching a movie or an episode of a comedy show that makes us laugh can additionally reduce our stress hormones. For others, listening to soothing music may be calming. If coffee or caffeinated drinks make you feel jittery or anxious, cut back and replace with decaffeinated substitutes or drink water or natural fruit juices. If nothing seems to help, and your stress and anxiety levels are not improving, consult your healthcare provider.

If you are considering senior living in Peoria, Arizona, we encourage you to learn more about MorningStar at Golden Ridge. The Risk of Dehydration Increases With Age

January 17, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than it takes in. It can happen when we experience an excessive loss of fluids from things like sweating, vomiting and/or diarrhea; or simply not drinking enough. Dehydration can sneak up on people and is a common problem especially in the heat of summer.

Older adults are even more at risk of dehydration as their thirst sensation decreases with age. This means seniors may not feel thirsty when they really need fluids. Other reasons can include underlying chronic illnesses of the heart, lung or kidneys as well as certain medications such as diuretics.

Maintaining fluids in our bodies is essential to good health. Dr. Marc Taub, an emergency physician and medical director of emergency services at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, states, “Water helps move nutrients and oxygen throughout our system, ensuring cells get the elements they need to function.”

Therefore it is important to recognize the early signs of dehydration and to address it.  The US News & World Report states these include:

  • Feeling thirsty.

  • Dry mouth.

  • Lightheaded.

  • Fatigue.

  • Darker-colored urine.

  • Odorous urine.

Mild cases of dehydration are easy to fix. Just drink a couple of glasses of water or try an electrolyte-enriched beverage like sports drinks or coconut water. If you are outside, get out of the sun and seek a cool location.

Doctors say since older adults are more at risk, they should take extra precautions to make sure they don’t get into a difficult situation, particularly those with chronic medical conditions or on multiple medications. This would include staying indoors on hot days and drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. If you feel you are drinking enough fluids but still feel thirsty or experiencing symptoms associated with dehydration, let your healthcare provider know.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to meet the needs of residents in senior living with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Our well-designed Casitas and suites come in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom.  Amenities include a bistro/bar, fitness centers, salon, saline swimming pool, theatre/chapel, life enrichment rooms and more. Are You Considering Senior Living?

December 02, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

There comes a time in the lives of many senior citizens when they feel the need for a more carefree, comfortable retirement without all the responsibilities that come with home ownership. If you are looking for senior living, your next question may be what community is right for me.

As some of your decisions will be based on personal needs, it is important to know that senior living communities offer a range of options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of predictable budgeting, built-in companionship and restaurant-style dining as well as wellness programs and activities. Moreover, as a resident, if your health needs change and you require daily care, you are already familiar with all that senior living offers.

Assisted living is tailored to those seniors who wish to receive the daily senior care services they need to maintain their independence. They too flourish with vibrant programs and a supportive social community that allows them to comfortably and safely age in place.

For families with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, there is often a time when the person’s needs outpace the care family members can provide at home. If this is your family, you will want a community that offers a distinct memory care unit and a team of experienced caregivers.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we proudly offer older adults independent living, assisted living and memory care that seniors and their families have come to trust. To get to know us better we encourage potential residents and their families to schedule a tour to experience firsthand our ambience and friendly environment. Start Your Day With a Healthy Breakfast

November 15, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Growing up, most of our mothers told us it wasn’t healthy to skip breakfast. While we listened, many of us still went off to school without eating anything. Based on current research, it turns out our mother’s advice was right again, and eating breakfast is good for us for several reasons.

Registered Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade explains when we eat a healthy breakfast upon rising in the morning; it helps regulate our appetite for the rest of the day. If we break our nightly fast with a good meal, we are less likely to indulge in sugary or fat-laden food later in the morning. A healthy breakfast also helps to prevent blood sugar highs and lows and Palinski-Wade says this is important for diabetics as well as the rest of us.

While many breakfast foods such as cereal, baked goods, and granola bars are high in sugar and refined grains, experts say we should refuel our body each morning with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Protein makes us feel fuller and keeps us from later snacking on unhealthy foods. Eggs, yogurt, sausage, and peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast are good sources of protein. Fiber helps our digestive system work well and is found in oatmeal and whole grain cereals. Many meals can be partly prepared the night before to make your morning routine easier.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, senior living we provide a wide range of services and amenities including beautifully prepared, nutritious meals. Created by our Executive Chef and largely prepared from scratch, meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room.  Menus include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low-fat options for residents to self-manage. Residents also enjoy a bistro bar, fitness centers, salon, theatre/chapel, library, wellness programs and activities. For more information about exceptional senior living in Peoria, Arizona, please visit our website.

Protect Your Medicare Number to Prevent Fraud

October 09, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association estimates last year’s annual Medicare insurance fraud was around $100 billion, and most likely much higher. While one in five beneficiaries say they have encountered potential Medicare fraud, there are precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate fraudulent claims starting with protecting your Medicare and Social Security cards and numbers like you do your credit cards.

Experts say don’t respond to a call, text or email asking you to provide your Medicare Number. They caution you to only show your Medicare card or give out your number to your doctor or people you know who should have it. To determine if you are a victim of fraud, examine your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully for any discrepancies or additions of services or charges you did not receive. Another common scam is to try to get Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for drug plans that are not approved by Medicare.

If your Medicare card is stolen or you suspect fraud, report it as soon as possible to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). It is important to know Medicare will never call to sell you anything or visit you at home. They will only call or contact you in limited situations to ask for personal information. One such person may be the agent who helped you sign up for a particular Medicare program or drug plan. You also may be contacted by Medicare if you left your number to report fraud or inconsistencies with your MSNs.

Looking for exceptional senior living in the Phoenix area? MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers a true home distinguished by comfort, wellness and community. How Common Are Drug Recalls in the US?

September 16, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

We all applaud the numerous life-saving medications that help many people enjoy a higher quality of life than they may have experienced without these wonder drugs. In the US, the FDA is in charge of approving the medications that come to market in our country and ensuring they are safe and effective.

While each new prescription drug is carefully looked at by the experts at the FDA before it is granted approval, over the last ten years statistics show there were more than 14,000 drugs recalled. This adds up to an average of almost four recalls a day.

Experts say although the numbers sound alarming, in most cases, the FDA is aware of any side effects and risks the drug has before it is made available to the public. According to an article from the Harvard Medical School, there are several explanations as to why things are missed after approval, and a drug is deemed unsafe and recalled.

The most likely reason is drug clinical trials are typically done with at most a couple of thousand people. After a drug is widely used by tens of thousands, rare reactions may turn up. Secondly, clinical trial participates are generally healthy in order to produce better trial results. Once the general public is using the drug, it may not work like it did during trials. Problems can also occur because people are using other medications as well.

Other complications resulting in a drug being recalled include poor manufacturing processes including bacterial contamination or problems with mislabeling and storage. In some cases, incidences of recalls are due to manufacturers adding additional ingredients that were never in the original medication.

Thankfully most recalls are not life-threatening or dangerous to the user. Only 6 percent of recalls are Class I. This is where the drug is deemed dangerous and poses a serious health risk. The majority of recalls fall into the Class II category where a drug may present a less serious health risk or a temporary one. Many times it is a matter of a drug being improperly stored such as a too hot location.

To safeguard yourself, you can sign up for texts or emails from the FDA regarding safety alerts and recalls on drugs. Additionally, pharmacists advise patients to carefully examine their new prescription for the correct color and broken or crumbling pills. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns regarding your medications.

At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, our well-designed Casitas and suites come in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom configurations.  Amenities include chef-inspired meals, restaurant-style dining, fitness centers, salon, theater, swimming pool and more. In addition, we offer a range of wellness programs and activities designed to keep residents physically, mentally, socially and spiritually engaged. Which Senior Living Option Meet Your Needs?

September 11, 2024 by Karla A

Have you been thinking it’s time for a change in your living arrangements and you would love a more manageable, relaxed lifestyle?  If you have started looking into senior living options your next question may be “what is the difference between independent living and assisted living, and which one is best suited to my needs?”

Independent living is ideal for active seniors who no longer wish to maintain their own home and desire a more carefree lifestyle.  While each community can vary, many offer amenities such as social activities, wellness programs, day trips and meals.  It is also perfect for those who love the sound of predictable budgeting, community living and built-in companionship.  Care services are not provided but being a resident in an independent community may give you priority for a move into memory care if the need should arise.

Assisted living is designed for seniors who need help with everyday activities in order to improve their quality of life and maintain their independence.  Communities will have an array of services such as housekeeping, laundry, transportation, daily meals, and 24-hour care.  Generally, a community assesses in-coming residents to determine the level of assistance needed that is agreeable to the senior and their extended family.  Other amenities offered include a range of activities and wellness programs.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, you will discover senior living at its best.  Our community is designed to enhance the lives of our residents and provide a home where seniors can safely, and comfortably age in place.  Along with inviting common areas both inside and out, we offer a range of amenities and wellness programs to promote a healthy and engaged lifestyle. Our stylish Casitas and suites come in a variety of floor plans, and we are pet friendly. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding independent or senior living in Peoria, Arizona.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.
