Tips to Help an Elderly Loved One Enjoy the Holiday Gatherings

January 10, 2025 by Karla A in Independent Living

Now that Christmas and Hanukah are almost here, it is a good idea to make a plan to ensure your elderly parents or other senior guests feel connected to the family, enjoy themselves and are safe. You want them to know they are still an essential part of the family’s holiday celebrations.

Your plans should start by considering any mobility limitations they may have; and if you can, try and host the event in a venue that can accommodate their needs. For example, think about access into the building, and if there are stairs, will they need a ramp or elevator to get to the party area? Are there handrails and other safety features in the bathroom and/or will they need assistance?

Experts say it is important to also consider the seating arrangements so grandma or mom doesn’t feel isolated. Choose a comfortable chair for them that is easy to get in and out of and offers good acoustics as well as good lighting. The aim is to ensure they feel part of the group and that it is easy for them to join in the conversation. It is a good idea to have a quiet place where they can retire to for a short respite and get away from the noise and bustle of the group.

Additionally have someone available that is willing to assist the person, and have a plan ready for any medical emergencies that may arise. The key is to stay flexible and remember you want to create a memorable celebration for the whole group.

MorningStar of Beaverton is a wonderful spot to not only enjoy the holiday season but every day of the year we have something going on you will want to be part of. Our senior living community offers independent living and assisted living with a wide selection of contemporary one- and two-bedroom floorplans. Sundowner’s Syndrome

January 08, 2025 by Karla A in Independent Living

The Alzheimer’s Association explains, “Sundowner’s syndrome” or “sundowning” is a set of symptoms or behaviors that are found in some people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The syndrome’s symptoms include agitation and anxiety, and it occurs in the later part of the day and evening with marked behavior changes in the person.

Fred Kobylarz, MD, co-director of the Center for Healthy Aging at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School says it is not a disease, but rather a symptom of dementia. While doctors do not know the cause of sundowning, they believe it may be a “combination of hormonal changes, brain deterioration or damage that has occurred, environmental factors, disruption to a person’s circadian rhythm, and more.”

The syndrome may start as early as 1 p.m. in some people but usually is later in the day. Along with agitation and anxiety; symptoms can include things like pacing, disorientation, hallucinations and problems sleeping. Other behavior changes may include angry outburst and aggressive, sometimes even physical altercations. Others just want to be closer to a person they trust as they need reassurance. Some people do not remember what happened earlier in the day and even forget they just ate dinner and want to eat again.

Experts say in some cases sundowning starts before a person has had a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. However it is not only found in people with dementia as some older adults exhibit symptoms during an illness or period of delirium.

Doctors recommend families who suspect Sundowners to consult with their healthcare provider to rule out other causes. Guidelines for managing the syndrome include setting up a schedule that adheres to their needs and maintaining a consistent daily routine to reduce confusion and fatigue. During morning hours encourage the person to do activities that increase their exposure to natural light to help support better sleep-wake cycles. Avoid over stimulating the person in the evenings and don’t subject them to crowds, bright screens or loud noises.

At MorningStar of Arvada, our senior living community provides the most trusted memory care Arvada, CO families rely on. Our memory care specialists complete thorough training including in our signature program, Lavender Sky. Reflections Neighborhood is distinct from our assisted living and independent living neighborhoods, and provides all-inclusive care for our most tender residents. Early Signs of Osteoporosis

January 08, 2025 by Karla A in Independent Living

As osteoporosis is known as a “silent disease,” it often goes undetected until someone has a fracture or broken bone. It is estimated one in three women will get the disease and one in five men over the age of 50. There are now excellent treatments that help slow down the rate of bone loss and speed up the rate of renewal; and even gene-based therapies expected in the near future; if you don’t know you have the disease, you cannot benefit from treatment.

Trusted sources of information include online sites like the Mayo Clinic, NIH or Medical News Today, which explains, “Osteoporosis is a progressive condition, and many people may not notice symptoms until they experience a fracture. However, some individuals may notice early symptoms that could indicate osteoporosis.”

Experts say a good first step is to evaluate your personal risk factors such as age, sex, weight, health, family history and medications you take. A decrease in your grip strength or receding gums or brittle nails can be other early indicators of osteoporosis.

As the disease progresses, you may experience back pain from small fractures in the back as the vertebrae begins to weaken. One common type of back pain occurs when a person is standing up and leaning slightly forward. They are able to lessen the pain by tilting backward. A stooped posture is another sign the back is weakening and you may have fractures that make it harder to support the body. Many also experience a decrease in their height as the bones in the back begin to collapse and compress.

If you do experience any of these symptoms, you need to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a bone density scan with a machine called DEXA (dual energy X-ray scan). In addition, it is suggested you include weight-bearing exercises to your routine and make changes toward a more calcium and protein enriched diet.

MorningStar of Beaverton is a senior living community with an excellent reputation for trusted senior care and hospitality services, luxury amenities, and wellness programs and activities. Our 55+ community proudly offers the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care in a range of smartly-designed floorplans and configurations. Contact us to talk about your options.

Helpful Tips for Dealing with Dry Skin

January 06, 2025 by Karla A in Memory care

When treating our skin, it is important to remember it is more than a simple covering and is actually the body’s largest organ. Moreover, like our other organs, if we don’t take care of it, we can end up with problems including extremely dry skin. It is no secret that winter temperatures and low humidity exacerbate the problem of dry skin, which is even more problematic for older adults.

Our skin becomes dry when it fails to hold in sufficient moisture, and as we age, there is a decrease in its ability to retain moisture. Experts explain older adults’ oil glands not only produce less oil but the aging process causes the skin to become thinner and lose fat making it that much harder to retain moisture. In addition the skin’s collagen and elastin fibers become thinner and lose their elasticity, and sweat glands decrease with age.

Along with all the physical changes; cold, dry or windy climates contribute to the problem. Certain health conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease and hypothyroidism as well as some antiperspirants and strong soaps also dry out the skin. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking as they too cause dry skin.

To help maintain or revive your parched skin, experts recommend using skin moisturizers with humectants that attract moisture such as ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and lecithin. They say the thicker and greasier the moisturizer is the more effective it will be. Another tip is to use a humidifier in the winter set to 60%. Limit your daily shower to 5 to 10 minutes and only use lukewarm water. Avoid soap. Instead use moisturizing products to clean the skin, and don’t use loofahs or washcloths. While you are still slightly damp, apply your moisturizer as it will seal in the moisture. Beware of laundry detergents with fragrance and avoid fabric softeners.

At the MorningStar of Arvada senior living community, we are honored to provide the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care. We cater to the various needs of older adults with senior-friendly activities and companionship. Medicare Recipients Get Many Vaccines at No-cost

January 03, 2025 by Karla A in Independent Living

As we age, protecting our health is more important than ever. We know older adults tend to experience severe symptoms and complications from many communicable viruses and diseases, and can have a harder time bouncing back from them. Being vaccinated lowers the risk for serious illness, and in extreme cases death; and the side effects of vaccines are typically mild and temporary. While Medicare covers the cost of vaccines for the flu, COVID-19 and RSV, many seniors are not always sure if or when they need to get another shot.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends people 65 years or older get an annual high-dose flu vaccine if available as they suffer the most from the disease. There are two types. One high-dose flu vaccine contains an antigen called hemagglutinin and has 3 to 4 times as much flu virus antigen as a standard vaccine. The other has an ingredient called an adjuvant that helps the immune system respond better to the virus. If you are over 65 and suspect you have the flu, talk to your healthcare provider as soon as possible as they can prescribe a flu antiviral treatment.

The recommendation for the COVID-19 vaccine is for people 65 years or older to get 2 doses of the updated 2024-2025 vaccine six months apart. They say if you have upcoming travel or events in your life where you want to be very protected from the disease you could get your second dose somewhat earlier.

The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine protects against the respiratory syncytial virus, and the CDC recommends all persons 75 years or older get the one time shot. If you are someone at an increased risk, they say people ages 60-74 years old can get the RSV vaccine.

Other vaccines covered by Medicare Part D include vaccines for shingles, tetanus-diphtheria-whooping cough (TDAP) and others. Consult with your healthcare providers on what vaccines you should be getting to protect your health.

December 27, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As we age it becomes more and more important to have a strong network of support for the best quality of life. For many seniors; security, safety and peace of mind knowing someone is always around if they require help contributes greatly to their well-being.

Happy Mom can call it home.”  Another son writes about his mother who is in our memory care. He says, “Before moving her here, I toured many homes. I refer to MorningStar as the Cadillac of retirement communities. Worth the extra cost! The staff is friendly and loving towards my mom. The facility is clean and always smells good. Building a Better Social Life

December 25, 2024 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Council on Aging reports just as regular preventive medical screenings, vaccinations and dental exams are vital to maintaining our best health so is protecting our social and mental health. Studies show older adults who say they feel isolated are affected in several negative ways.

Researchers explain there is a connection between those who say they have a good social life with a longer life span. Studies indicate it may be because these are people who appear to handle stress better; something that is linked to cardiovascular disease.

Studies also find seniors who report having a better quality social life were more likely to regularly exercise. Another concerning finding is that isolation is linked to an increase in a person’s risk for anxiety and depression, which are both linked to a higher risk for dementia.

Many seniors living alone have lost a spouse or other close family members and friends and feel very alone. Experts say if this is your situation, they suggest checking with your local senior center, church or library about interesting activities they may sponsor; or look into joining a book club, gardening club or other hobby groups. If you are an animal lover, think about adopting a pet as they provide companionship and a sense of purpose. Volunteer work is another thing that cannot only keep you busy but bring more meaning into your life.

One really good way to feel less alone and maybe even find some new friends, interests and activities is to move to a senior living community. MorningStar of Arvada is one of the top senior communities in the area and offers a full range of options including independent living, assisted living and the most trusted memory care Arvada, CO families trust. In addition we have lots of programs and activities to meet most every interest (if we don’t, we encourage you to start your own club) and routinely schedule entertaining road trips to local places of interest. Dealing with Fatigue

December 23, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

You may be one of the millions of Americans who complain about feeling a sense of fatigue that makes it difficult to get on with life. The Harvard Medical school explains there is a distinction between just feeling tired and fatigue, which “includes components that are physical (weariness or weakness), mental (lack of concentration and sharpness), and emotional (lack of motivation or boredom).”

Some of the causes of fatigue may be easier to identify such as lingering symptoms from an illness like Covid or the flu, or side effects from medical treatments like chemo-therapy. Even some medications are known to cause tiredness. When fatigue is ongoing and interfering with day-to-day activities, doctors say you should consult with your healthcare provider.

Your doctor can look for things like anemia as it can be a reason for a decline in energy. It occurs when a person’s blood has too few red blood cells, or cells without enough hemoglobin that is used to transport oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Heart disease is another cause of fatigue as it can make the heart pump less efficiently and result in fluid build-up in lungs. This can lead to a reduction in the amount of oxygen able to circulate into the lungs and heart.

Other causes of fatigue include depression and insomnia that often can go hand in hand. However antidepressants, which are often prescribed to treat depression as well as certain blood pressure meds and antihistamines, can increase tiredness.

Experts say while fatigue caused by medical or mental health needs to be attended to by your physician; there are self-help things you can do to manage or treat fatigue every day. The first is to get in the habit of exercising. Next watch what you eat and try to reduce your consumption of fried and over-processed foods. Following a low glycemic diet may help boost energy. Other tips include staying hydrated, reducing alcohol and watching how much coffee you drink each day.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we proudly provide senior living older adults can count on. Our community offers a choice of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Please contact us today and let us show you around our beautiful community.

Causes & Treatment for Spondylosis

December 23, 2024 by Karla A in Independent Living

The Medical News Today website reports it is estimated 90 percent of adults over the age of 60 have some form of spondylosis, a general term for degenerative conditions affecting the disks, vertebrae and joints in the back. Spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylolisthesis are also terms used to describe the condition. Back pain or numbness, tingling and weakness in the hands, feet or legs are all common symptoms; and for many can interfere with their quality of life. Others do not have any symptoms and the condition is only found on imaging scans like X-rays, MRI, and CTs.

The condition involves the various components of the spine including bones, ligaments, muscles and the cushioning between vertebrae resulting in commonly known problems like herniated or slipped disks, and osteoarthritis. When the neck and back are affected, it is called cervical spondylosis. Lower back problems are known as lumbar spondylosis.

Medical professionals say aging is a big factor in spondylosis as are certain life-long habits. These include jobs involving lots of activity that puts stress on the back and a history of playing demanding, physical sports. However those with a history of little physical activity are also at risk. Obesity, smoking and neck or back injuries are some other risk factors.

Experts say treatment for spondylosis can range from modifying movement to physical therapy, medications, steroid injections and surgery. Other therapeutic approaches include acupuncture, chiropractic, massage or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Your doctor can work with you to devise a plan based on the cause of the problem as well as the severity of your pain.

Aging for Your Best Life

December 20, 2024 by Karla A in Independent Living

As we look to the New Year, it is a good time to reflect on how we are handling our own aging. Experts say by the time you get into your fifties, it is a good idea to get serious about your approach to growing older. This should include paying attention to not only your actual physical health but according to a recent AARP article; to your habits, behaviors and even attitude.

Meg Selig worked as a national certified counselor (NCC) in various school settings, from elementary school through college, before she retired. She published her first book at the age of 65; and her latest book, Silver Sparks: Thoughts on Growing Older, Wiser, and Happier, was released at age 76. Throughout the book, Selig offers science-based tips to help you create more happiness, health, self-confidence, compassion, and purpose at every age and stage of our lives.

Other geriatric professionals point out good health isn’t the only thing necessary to aging well. Some people without any physical limitations or health problems are miserable while others, who are wheelchair bound for example, are living life to the fullest. For those struggling with poor health, it is important to not only have the physical support needed but a strong emotional support system as well.

Studies also link longevity and happiness to people who say they have a sense of purpose.  This may mean figuring out what type of things you enjoy and adding new activities you may have wanted to do for a while to your to-do list. After all, if not now, when? Some of the activities seniors report they find enjoyable include things like gardening or taking a nature walk. Others enjoy the challenges of learning to cook new foods, play an instrument or speak a new language. Volunteering in even a small way can additionally bring lots of satisfaction.

At the MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community, our independent living and assisted living offers comfort, security and stylish suites along with the freedom and choices to live life to the fullest. With luxury amenities, 5-star dining and a complement of meaningful wellness programs and activities, it allows you to stay as busy as you like. For seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood provides memory care residents and their families can trust. Thinking about Senior Living?

December 20, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

As today’s seniors are living longer than ever, it makes sense to consider whether to age in place in their own home or take advantage of the benefits offered by senior living communities. While many older adults say they wish to stay at home, the reality is in some situations; it may be impractical and expensive and not as safe given their health issues. To make an informed decision regarding one’s choices, it is important to know the real cost of living at home, receiving in-home care or residing in a senior community.

If you are currently living in your own place and think senior living communities are way more expensive, consider the following. Living in a home or apartment means a monthly mortgage or rent payment and homeowners or rental insurance. Monthly expenses include utility bills for electricity, gas, trash and water as well as phone and internet services.

Assuming you no longer want to or can maintain the outside of your home, you will need lawn care and perhaps snow removable services not to mention maintenance like painting or replacing a roof. Driving and maintaining a car is not cheap and in many cases is necessary if you live on your own. Other expenses might include things like an emergency call system, fitness club membership and housekeeping services, which all start adding up.

If a senior needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) and wants to obtain in-home care services, you need to factor in those cost, and they are not cheap. So in addition to all of the associated costs of living in and maintaining a home, you also have the high cost of in-home care.

Senior living communities may sound very expensive until you factor in all of the benefits you get. Many offer a choice of independent living or assisted living with spacious private apartments, onsite amenities such as fitness centers and salons, dining services, social activities and an appropriate level of care for residents. Many include scheduled transportation, organized trips to local activities and are pet friendly.

The MorningStar of Arvada senior living community is designed around the various needs of older adults and provides senior-friendly activities and companionship with like-minded people of a similar age. Outside chores as well as the cleaning and cooking are taken care of by us allowing you to focus on the things you love to do most in life. Older Adults are at Greater Risk of Serious Eye Diseases

December 13, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older, we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.

One of the most serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people aged 60 and older, affecting nearly 20 million Americans. The risk of developing AMD increases with age and if you are 75 or older, your risk is 1 in 3.  Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our beautiful 55+ community is designed to meet every need. Residents enjoy luxury amenities, care and hospitality services, and a range of wellness programs and activities. Being a Caregiver is Often Challenging

December 11, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Caregiver burnout is a real thing. Experts estimate 61 percent of the country’s 48 million caregivers are working outside jobs along with acting as a caregiver. In a report titled “Working While Caregiving: It’s Complicated,” from AARP and S&P Global, two-thirds of respondents said they had at least some difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities.

The survey reports 84% of respondents said caregiving had a moderate or high impact on the stress they feel daily. Another 27% of working caregivers said due to their workload “they were forced to go from full-time to part-time work or reduce their hours.” Others complained their employers seemed to be more understanding of child care leave than they were to employees who had to take time off to care for a parent or other elderly family member.

Respondents said beyond holding down a job, they were putting in at least six hours a week of caregiving for a loved one. Tasks include everything from assisting with the actual physical care of a loved one to taking the person to doctor visits, grocery shopping, and serving as an advocate for the person to ensure they are getting the proper care.

Other studies support the findings of the AARP survey as they too found participants reported difficulty in balancing work and caregiving; and the negative impact it can have on physical and mental health. In 2023, a study found almost half of all caregivers were spending between 10 to 29 hours a week caregiving. More concerning is many caregivers are neglecting their own health stating they have no time to exercise and are not keeping up with routine annual physicals and screening. In fact, 41% of caregivers report low overall well-being, which is 32% more than non-caregivers.

This is why assisted living and memory care communities can be a lifesaver for both the elderly person and the family caregiver. Not only do residents have their care needs met but they can also take advantage of all the benefits community living offers. Now when family members visit, they can just enjoy each other’s company.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we strive to be the best independent and assisted living in the Peoria area, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously.  Our all-inclusive community offers all the amenities, services and enrichment programs to help residents live life to the fullest. Everyone Experiences Grief in Their Own Way

December 09, 2024 by Karla A in Independent Living

Many of us have watched a good friend go through the grieving process after losing a loved one and have been frustrated by not being able to do more to comfort them. Experts explain this is a common feeling and provide some suggestions to help.

One of the first things to remember is everyone experiences grief in their own way. Heather L. McGinty, assistant professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral health at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, explains grief triggers a range of emotions, sensations and behaviors and can be complex.

A person’s emotions may swing from tearfulness to anger or denial, and as a friend, it can be hard to know what to say. Loneliness, betrayal, fear and acceptance are some of the other emotions grief brings up. Some people even experience physical symptoms such as headaches or stomachaches.

If you want to help, grief counselors say to first make sure the person wants it; and recommend asking if they want the type of support you hope to offer, such as spending time with them. Some people are very private and prefer to grieve in their own way. The most important thing is to be supportive of their wishes and be prepared to listen rather than hand out advice. Also, be specific like letting them know you want to take them to lunch when they are ready, or bring over a meal, run errands or do some yardwork.

Experts say avoid telling the person you know how they feel. Again, everyone experiences grief differently. Even if you don’t understand the way the person is acting out their grief, be supportive not judgmental. Lastly, don’t say things like “everything happens for a reason” or “they are in a better place.” If you think they would benefit from professional support, be sure to encourage them.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our beautiful home is designed from the ground up to serve our residents’ every need. Our community offers stylish Casitas and suites in a range of configurations and floor plans.  Residents enjoy carefree retirement years as we handle the maintenance and provide onsite amenities, all-day dining, and a community of friends. Are You Eating Too Much Sugar?

December 04, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Why do we crave sugary foods? An article from WebMD explains we may be prewired to like sweet things such as sugar as it is one of the things humans prefer right from birth. Sugar is a carbohydrate, as are healthier alternatives such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits, and helps to stimulate the release of serotonin, the body’s feel good chemical. However, unlike healthy carbs, sugar is a simple carbohydrate that satisfies our hunger and provides an energy boost but doesn’t last long. We just end up craving more of the quick high.

The good news is experts say there are tricks we can do to reduce our cravings for sugar. One example is to add protein-rich foods along with a sweet treat to help us feel fuller for a longer period and stabilize blood sugar levels. Try a cup of Greek yogurt with high-fiber berries for your mid-afternoon snack as it offers both a sweet taste and protein, and is low in fat and carbs. In addition, fruit is a tasty way to increase fiber.

Another tip is to eat at set times and add healthy snacks in-between meals. This helps reduce cravings for foods that fill us up quickly but do not have much nutritional value. It also can curb the habit of over-eating by making us feel fuller longer. To make food more appealing and sweeter tasting without sugar, try adding cinnamon. Studies show it may help control blood sugar levels by evening out high and low dips.

Other suggestions include drinking more water throughout the day including right before a meal. Experts recommend rather than trying to totally eliminate sugar from your diet to treat yourself to a few bite-size cookies or a premium dark chocolate truffle but keep the calorie count under 150. Getting enough sleep every night is important; and if you are craving a sweet, distract yourself by getting outside and taking a walk.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge may be your answer. We are a vibrant 55+ community in Peoria, AZ with well-designed Casitas and suites ranging from 404 to 1236 square feet. Are You Considering Senior Living?

December 02, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

There comes a time in the lives of many senior citizens when they feel the need for a more carefree, comfortable retirement without all the responsibilities that come with home ownership. If you are looking for senior living, your next question may be what community is right for me.

As some of your decisions will be based on personal needs, it is important to know that senior living communities offer a range of options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of predictable budgeting, built-in companionship and restaurant-style dining as well as wellness programs and activities. Moreover, as a resident, if your health needs change and you require daily care, you are already familiar with all that senior living offers.

Assisted living is tailored to those seniors who wish to receive the daily senior care services they need to maintain their independence. They too flourish with vibrant programs and a supportive social community that allows them to comfortably and safely age in place.

For families with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, there is often a time when the person’s needs outpace the care family members can provide at home. If this is your family, you will want a community that offers a distinct memory care unit and a team of experienced caregivers.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we proudly offer older adults independent living, assisted living and memory care that seniors and their families have come to trust. To get to know us better we encourage potential residents and their families to schedule a tour to experience firsthand our ambience and friendly environment. Our website also offers information regarding MorningStar’s philosophy and mission along with answers to FYQs to help you get to know us better.

If a loved one has dementia, please go to our Lifestyle Options and see the extensive memory care services we offer including family orientation & support resources. Why Arm Strength is Important for Seniors

November 29, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

We know balance exercises protect older adults’ safety and stability by preventing falls as well as helping maintain independence. The Harvard Medical School explains keeping arm strength should also be a goal for seniors.

The fact is as early as our mid-thirties, arm strength and overall muscles start to decline and continue to do so around one percent each year thereafter. Once we reach our sixties, experts say arm strength is declining by as much as 3 percent each year, and not only reduces our range of motion but increases our risk for injuries.

Functional strength improves quality of life, and having a strong upper body is important. Maintaining and/or building up arm strength benefits our bones and balance as well as prevents falls. Experts point to two important muscles that control our arm movements: biceps, the muscles located on the upper arm; and triceps, the muscles at the back of the upper arm. Both sets of muscles help us lift, carry and push.

Improving arm strength is easy to do at home and doesn’t require fancy gym equipment. Check with the Harvard Medical School or other sources on the Internet to find examples of exercises targeted toward seniors. To get started, all you need are a pair of two or five pound weights depending on your size and/or condition. As you gain strength, you can move up to heavier weights. However before beginning any new exercise, please check with your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community, we believe in providing seniors an all-encompassing environment for residents’ well-being and safely to comfortably age in place. Our community offers a full fitness room, spa room, massage room and a range of fun programming to enhance fitness.

For independent living and assisted living, we offer 66 well-designed suites in a variety of floorplans including studios and one- and two-bedrooms. Our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases 38 all-inclusive memory care suites. Contact us to learn more about one of the area’s finest senior living communities and ask us about setting up an in-person tour to get to know us better.
