Study after study reports elderly people who are pet owners, say they are the better for it. According to a Forbes magazine article, the number one benefit pets provide older adults with is “unconditional love.”  A whopping 83% of surveyed participants agree, and another 73% said their pet makes them feel loved. The good feelings pets give to seniors were even high in those who live with others. 

Other surveys of seniors found pets gave them a sense of purpose. Others said they derived joy just from interacting with a pet even if they didn’t own it. Some seniors expressed that they enjoy having a pet visit their home or interacting with one while visiting family or friends. 

In terms of what animals were most popular, dogs were a somewhat higher choice than cats; but some seniors had both. Experts say most people other than someone with very limited mobility can become dog owners. However, before you make a commitment to a dog; it makes sense to research breeds that do not require a lot of exercise. To this end, it might be better to adopt an older dog rather than try to raise a puppy. Smaller dogs are generally considered easier and there are several breeds known to be low-maintenance, easy to train and only require a daily walk. 

By their nature and their needs, cats are typically much easier than dogs. They are wonderful companions and don’t need to be walked. If you dislike the idea of pet hair around the house, opt for a short-haired cat. Most cats are pretty independent, can live inside, and are quieter than dogs. Generally they only need to interact with their owners twenty or thirty minutes a day. Other pets suitable for seniors are birds, reptiles and fish.

Options to Stay Hydrated Besides Water

Dehydration is a real concern especially for the elderly, or for anyone who spends time in the sun. Although the amount of fluid we need differs, Heather Mangieri, a registered dietitian based in Imperial, PA, says on average men should consume 15 cups of fluid a day and women 11 cups.  However, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) gathered between 2015 and 2018 showed that adults in the U.S. drank an average of only 44 ounces of water per day. That’s equivalent to just 5.5 cups of water.

Experts say water is the best way to hydrate but for those who find it a chore to drink, there are other healthy alternatives. In fact, an important component to our daily fluid intake can be foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are especially high in fluid. Some of the most moisture-providing vegetables are lettuce and cucumbers containing up to 96% water. Celery, radishes, spinach and cauliflower are other good choices. Some of the most hydrating fruits are tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe.

Despite popular folklore, coffee doesn’t cause fluid loss and does provide hydration, but experts say it is still important to limit your amount of caffeine especially toward evening. Drinking too much alcohol does dehydrate the body and one tip to lessen the effects is to consume a beverage high in electrolytes like coconut water. Cold soups are another way to keep your fluid levels high. Oatmeal with berries is a good choice for breakfast as the oats soak up the water they are cooked in and the berries themselves are hydrating.

Habits That Are Bad for Cognitive Health

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change. 

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes. 

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.  

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

Older Adults are at Greater Risk of Serious Eye Diseases

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

Being a Caregiver is Often Challenging

Caregiver burnout is a real thing. Experts estimate 61 percent of the country’s 48 million caregivers are working outside jobs along with acting as a caregiver. In a report titled “Working While Caregiving: It’s Complicated,” from AARP and S&P Global, two-thirds of respondents said they had at least some difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities. 

The survey reports 84% of respondents said caregiving had a moderate or high impact on the stress they feel daily. Another 27% of working caregivers said due to their workload “they were forced to go from full-time to part-time work or reduce their hours.” Others complained their employers seemed to be more understanding of child care leave than they were to employees who had to take time off to care for a parent or other elderly family member. 

Respondents said beyond holding down a job, they were putting in at least six hours a week of caregiving for a loved one. Tasks include everything from assisting with the actual physical care of a loved one to taking the person to doctor visits, grocery shopping, and serving as an advocate for the person to ensure they are getting the proper care. 

Other studies support the findings of the AARP survey as they too found participants reported difficulty in balancing work and caregiving; and the negative impact it can have on physical and mental health. In 2023, a study found almost half of all caregivers were spending between 10 to 29 hours a week caregiving. More concerning is many caregivers are neglecting their own health stating they have no time to exercise and are not keeping up with routine annual physicals and screening. In fact, 41% of caregivers report low overall well-being, which is 32% more than non-caregivers.

Are You Eating Too Much Sugar?

Why do we crave sugary foods? An article from WebMD explains we may be prewired to like sweet things such as sugar as it is one of the things humans prefer right from birth. Sugar is a carbohydrate, as are healthier alternatives such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits, and helps to stimulate the release of serotonin, the body’s feel good chemical. However, unlike healthy carbs, sugar is a simple carbohydrate that satisfies our hunger and provides an energy boost but doesn’t last long. We just end up craving more of the quick high. 

The good news is experts say there are tricks we can do to reduce our cravings for sugar. One example is to add protein-rich foods along with a sweet treat to help us feel fuller for a longer period and stabilize blood sugar levels. Try a cup of Greek yogurt with high-fiber berries for your mid-afternoon snack as it offers both a sweet taste and protein, and is low in fat and carbs. In addition, fruit is a tasty way to increase fiber.

Another tip is to eat at set times and add healthy snacks in-between meals. This helps reduce cravings for foods that fill us up quickly but do not have much nutritional value. It also can curb the habit of over-eating by making us feel fuller longer. To make food more appealing and sweeter tasting without sugar, try adding cinnamon. Studies show it may help control blood sugar levels by evening out high and low dips. 

Other suggestions include drinking more water throughout the day including right before a meal. Experts recommend rather than trying to totally eliminate sugar from your diet to treat yourself to a few bite-size cookies or a premium dark chocolate truffle but keep the calorie count under 150. Getting enough sleep every night is important; and if you are craving a sweet, distract yourself by getting outside and taking a walk.

Caring for a Person With Alzheimer’s Disease

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can be a time-consuming job. As the disease is progressive and symptoms worsen over time, the person’s needs also evolve. Things they used to do for themselves may no longer be possible or safe. Moreover, experts say like many older adults, a person with Alzheimer’s is likely to experience health changes over time. Therefore, it is important he/she continues to get routine checkups with their primary care physician as well as with any specialists they may be seeing.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) says some of the problems caregivers should look for are signs of fever, or sickness like the flu or pneumonia. They say a fever could be signs of infection, dehydration caused by lack of fluids, heat stroke or even constipation. When taking a person’s temperature, use a digital thermometer rather than a glass one as the person might bite down on the glass and break it. Let their doctor know right away if they do have a fever. To help prevent serious illness from flu or pneumonia, have the person get a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine if recommended. 

Dehydration can occur in people with Alzheimer’s as they may forget to drink fluids throughout the day. Caregivers should look for signs of dry mouth, dizziness and rapid heart rate. Experts say dehydration can even cause hallucinations; however, they are also a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. 

As the disease progresses, the person will most likely need help brushing their teeth. It is important to look for any sores in the mouth or oblivious signs of dental problems. 

NIH cautions caregivers to be on the lookout for signs of pain as the person may not have the ability to tell you. They recommend watching the person’s face for outward signs of pain, or sudden changes in their behavior such as yelling or striking out. If you are not sure what is happening, call their doctor for help.

Women’s Bone Health

Endocrinologist Kendall Moseley, MD, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Metabolic Bone & Osteoporosis Center, says most women do not know anything about their bone health. A recent survey from the National Osteoporosis Foundation backs up that sentiment finding around 94 percent of women do not worry about their skeletons. However, they add they should, as one in five women under 30 already have osteopenia, which is a step above full out osteoporosis. The good news is there are things you can do to protect your frame and avoid the things that are not good for bone health.  

Experts say our bones constantly break down and rebuild every 10 years resulting in a new skeleton. The problem lies in the fact that after the age of 30, our bodies start to lose more bone than they make. Women’s estrogen levels also begin to drop around 30, which is another protector of women’s bone health. 

An unbalanced diet or severely restricting calories in an effort to stay thin or lose weight can be another cause of low bone density; and too much caffeine, salt and alcohol all interfere with retaining calcium, our primary bone builder. Even some medications deplete calcium and include certain anti-depressants and contraceptives so be sure to ask your doctor about side effects of medications you take. It is important for women to include dairy products or foods like beans and nuts to increase their calcium intake. Protein from plants and lean meats are also good ways to get calcium.

Along with a good diet, exercise is an important element of keeping bones strong. While some exercises are better than others, scientists recommend weight bearing exercises like walking and running as good ways to build strong bones. Strength training exercises may be the ultimate bone builder and include things like pushups and squats or kickboxing.

Older Adults at Greater Risk of Vision Loss

Did you know it is estimated that 93 million US adults aged 18 years or older in 2017 were at high risk for vision loss, according to a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology. Those at high risk for vision loss included diabetics, had vision and eye problems, or were aged 65 years or older. Experts say while many vision problems can be treated, in some cases they can also be prevented by adopting simple, healthy habits. 

If you have already gotten into the habit of wearing sunscreen and a sun-blocking hat when you are outdoors for any period, optometrists say you need to complete your protection by making sure to wear protective sunglasses. Exposure to UV increases our risk for cataracts and your sunglasses should have a label reading “100 percent protection from UV and UVB rays” or “100 percent protection against UV 400.”  If you are outside working for long hours, consider wrap-around style sunglasses, and if you are doing work such as trimming bushes or chopping wood, be sure to wear safety sunglasses.   

As the risk for eye diseases increases as we age, the National Eye Institute recommends having your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Their guidelines advise a dilated eye exam every 1-2 years for those over 60 (African Americans over age 40) or anyone with a family history of glaucoma. Regardless of age, most people with diabetes or high blood pressure need to get a dilated exam at least once a year.  They go on to say that you should talk to your doctor about what schedule is best for you.

Other ways to protect your eyes as you age is to eat a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Additionally, stop smoking, maintain a healthy weight and stay physically active. If you do have high blood pressure or diabetes, you need to learn how to manage them and follow your doctor’s guidelines.

Experts advise families to do their homework when helping mom or dad move into assisted living homes, as the more you know about senior living communities helps avoid sticker shock as well as an unhappy parent. The recommendation is to tour at least two potential communities to make an informed comparison.
