Try These Different Modes of Communication for Memory Care

April 19, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Using different modes of communication is a critical aspect of providing effective care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. By tailoring communication to each resident's individual needs and abilities, caregivers can help to reduce frustration, anxiety, and isolation, while fostering a sense of connection and community. Memory care communities, like MorningStar Memory Care in Beaverton, offer specialized care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. In addition to providing personalized care and support, MorningStar also emphasizes the importance of using different modes of communication to enhance the quality of life for seniors in memory care.

One of the primary reasons why using different modes of communication is important for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia is because these conditions can impact a person's ability to communicate effectively through speech alone. Seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia may have trouble remembering words, may struggle to express themselves, or may experience confusion or disorientation. This can make it difficult for them to communicate their needs or feelings, which can lead to frustration, anxiety, or isolation.

Visual aids, gestures, and touch help to support seniors in memory care by making communication more seamless. For example, using picture books or other visual aids can help seniors to identify and express their needs, even if they are struggling to remember specific words. Using touch, such as holding a resident's hand or giving them a gentle hug, can also help to convey warmth and support, even if verbal communication is limited.

Another important benefit of using different modes of communication is that it can help to reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness among seniors in memory care. Memory care communities can be disorienting or overwhelming for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia, which can make them feel disconnected from the world around them. By using different modes of communication, caregivers can help to create a sense of connection and community, even if verbal communication is challenging.

Families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are receiving the very best modern and holistic memory care practices for memory care in Beaverton. MorningStar utilizes the latest technology and research in memory care to create an engaging and stimulating environment and lifestyle for residents. Offering a range of activities and programs, our assisted living is designed to promote social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and physical exercise. These activities not only enhance residents' quality of life, but they can also help slow the progression of dementia.

Open Your Mind to New Hobbies and Activities

April 12, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

How long has it been since you really made the effort to learn something new? As we age, many of us can get stuck in a rut. However, opening our minds to new ideas and trying new activities can provide seniors with a renewed interest in life and help keep the brain sharp.

The choice of hobbies and activities for retirees is endless and includes dusting off old skills or learning something entirely new. Things like painting and drawing classes can be done in person or online. The same goes for listening to lectures, joining a book club or writing workshop, and learning a foreign language. If you need more computer skills or would like to know more about social media, join a class and get started.

If you have always wanted to play an instrument, what are you waiting for? Neuroscientists and music teachers say it is never too late to learn. Scot Hawkins, a piano teacher in Silver Spring, Md., says, “Ability is low on the list of what's required for adult students. Instead, attitude — especially patience — is everything.” Playing music is a great mental exercise and can help keep brain cells alive that would otherwise wither and die.

Chess, trivia, crossword and jigsaw puzzles as well as strategy board games help sharpen our cognitive skills as do various computer and video games. Other suggestions of engaging activities include trips to local museums, concerts, and plays.

Have you begun the search for senior living? If so, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge, conveniently located in a northwest suburb of Phoenix.  Our calendar is loaded with a wide range of activities and wellness programs including exercise classes, games, live entertainment and special events to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about exceptional independent living, assisted living or memory care at MorningStar.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Research Shows Pets are Beneficial to Seniors

April 10, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Research has shown pets are beneficial to seniors. A Place for Mom’s website reports on one study, which found “15 minutes spent bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop.” Researchers explain interactions between human and pets can lower cholesterol levels, fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke.

Pets can teach seniors to live in the here and now as they do, and dogs and cats are great at offering their owners unconditional love, emotional support and affection. In fact, animals uplift the spirits of those in hospitals, convalescent homes, mental health centers, nursing homes, and assisted living communities through pet therapy programs. Moreover, pet therapy has proven beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Experts point to the animal’s full acceptance and non-verbal communication as being soothing for patients.

It was not that long ago that seniors moving into a 55+ community had to leave behind an important companion, their pet. Today however, more and more senior living communities are recognizing the benefits of pets to the elderly, and many such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, allow residents to bring their pets with them. We do ask that you check with us regarding our pet policy.

Please contact us with your questions regarding availability, choice of casitas or suites, pricing, care services and more. Our beautiful community offers 38 two-bedroom casitas for independent living and 65 suites for assisted living in a range of configurations to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, 35 secure memory care suites are devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. We look forward to hearing from you.

Most Memory Lapses are a Result of Not Being Mindful

April 07, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

If you are a senior who is always looking for your phone, readers or car keys, most likely it is a normal part of aging. Lydia Cho, a psychologist and neuropsychologist with Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, says growing older brings with it these and other memory lapses like forgetting names of people we just met or the time of our next appointment. Moreover, younger people can also be forgetful; but experts caution serious memory loss needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Thankfully most memory lapses are more a matter of not focusing or being mindful of what we are doing. For example, many times we absentmindedly set down our keys or phone while we are distracted doing other things. To keep track of commonly misplaced items, experts say set up a basket on the counter just for those things. If you are someone who always worries if you turn off the oven, you probably did it without thinking. Next time as you turn off the oven, mindfully say to yourself “I am turning off the oven.”

If you worry about forgetting where you put something, take a picture of it sitting in the drawer or the shelf in the closet. Adapting these suggestions to other things should help improve your mindfulness. Another tip when meeting someone new is to take a moment to really look at the person and say their name back to them in your greeting. If you need more help to remember their name associate it with a friend or movie character, or a rhyming word.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to be a true home for our residents and offers all the amenities and services needed for their comfort, wellbeing and safety. Our luxury community offers independent living in two-bedroom casitas with attached garages and assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. In addition, we have memory care suites for those suffering with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s exceptional senior living in Peoria, AZ.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Assisted Living

April 05, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As a vibrant 55+ community, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has stylish casitas and suites offering seniors a choice of independent living, assisted living or memory care. Our independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of someone else handling the maintenance and housekeeping, giving them more time to socialize, travel and pursue their interests. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, we have secure suites devoted entirely to highly individualized, specialized care.

MorningStar’s assisted living is for seniors who require help with the activities of daily living (ADLs) to improve their quality of life. As an assisted living resident, you will have a personalized plan created for you, and updated as needed. Around-the-clock care managers, access to licensed nurses and medication management are just a few of the many services we provide to ensure your safety and to meet your needs.

Many residents report being surprised by how full their lives are after a move into an assisted living community. Moreover, rather than lose their independence as many fear such a move would do, most are pleased to discover once they get the daily care they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.

Community life solves the problem of loneliness as well as problems with meal preparation many elderly adults experience, often resorting to frozen meals or fast food. MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. No longer driving? No worries as we offer scheduled transportation to area shopping as well as trips to the doctors and running errands.

We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Moreover, if we do not have a program or activities that attract your interest or offer a hobby you would love to explore, we encourage you to start a club.

Hearing Loss is Common Among Seniors

April 03, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

For trusted independent living, assisted living, or memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge.   We are conveniently located in Peoria, minutes from Glendale, and have easy access to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants, and other services. Please contact us to learn more about MorningStar’s amenities, care services, availability and pricing.

The Benefits of Companion Living in Assisted Living Communities

March 22, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Living with a partner provides a sense of companionship, familiarity, and emotional support for seniors in need of memory care. After years of living together, seniors may not want to be separated from their partners, especially during a time when they may be experiencing health challenges or the need for assistance with daily living tasks. Companion living allows seniors to continue to share their lives together while receiving the care they need. However, this isn’t the only benefit of companion living for seniors. MorningStar offers companion living options for seniors in need of memory care because of the benefits of living with familiar friends or family members, the cost benefits, and enhanced safety and security.

MorningStar offers Companion Living in all of our communities, where two unrelated people of the same sex share a suite, whether in independent living, assisted living, or memory care. Couples can also live together in their own suites, surrounded by their own treasured possessions. Alternatively, suites can be shared by friends who simply enjoy one another’s company. Not only does this living arrangement enhance life through its camaraderie, but it also extends savings.

Companion living provides seniors struggling with memory loss with the opportunity to live with their partners and continue to enjoy each other's company. This can be especially important for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia who have been together for many years and may have difficulty adjusting to a new living situation without their partner. Companion living also provides socialization opportunities with other residents and staff members, reducing the risk of isolation and loneliness.

Companions living in assisted living communities can also provide enhanced safety and security for seniors and their partners because each partner will have closer attention to their loved one and can notice changes in behaviors and health. Assisted living communities like MorningStar are designed to provide a safe and secure memory care environment for residents. Staff members are available 24/7 to respond to emergencies, and many communities have security features such as locked entrances and video surveillance.

Are You Worried About the Cost of Memory Care in Arvada, Colorado?

March 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Caring for a parent or loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be challenging, time-consuming, and cause financial stress. At MorningStar in Arvada, Colorado, we understand the importance of providing high-quality memory care to our residents, and we work with families to make sure they have the resources they need to pay for care. If you are considering memory care for your parents but are unsure how to cover the costs, we encourage you to explore the payment options we offer here at MorningStar and how they can help you pay for the care for your loved one’s memory care needs.

When it comes to paying for assisted living, financial resources are available beyond retirement savings and investments. If your loved one owns a home, has veteran benefits, or has a life insurance policy, these are some of the ways in which payment for memory care can be possible outside private pay options.

The equity built up in a private home is typically a retiree’s largest asset, making the proceeds from selling extremely helpful when transitioning to a senior community. However, selling a home in a timely manner can be challenging and time-consuming. This is especially true when adult children are not living near to assist. Many families find it helpful to work with a Real Estate Professional experienced with all aspects of selling a senior’s home. From packing and cleaning to listing and selling, ElderLife’s agents are ready to assist with the entire process to simplify a senior transition. To be connected with a local agent, contact us today.

Whole life and universal life policies build a reserve of cash through interest-earning excess premiums. In some situations, life insurance can be a source of ready funds through cash surrender, death benefit loans, accelerating death benefits, life (or viatical) settlements, or even selling the policy on the open market for immediate cash. Before acting on any of these methods, consult a financial advisor, as there may be tax consequences. Life Care Funding can also help you determine whether a policy can be converted.

Contact us today if you want to know more about the built-in companionship, predictable budgeting, and memory care Arvada Co has seen. MorningStar Senior Living Retirement Homes in Arvada Colorado takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. Whether it’s fulfilling a calling, finding a new opportunity through volunteerism, or spending time with friends and loved ones and relaxing, contact us to schedule a tour of our memory care community near you.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ, we proudly offer the finest senior care with independent living, assisted living and memory care options.  As experienced specialists in caring for those with memory loss from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, our community is equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

Our loving and compassionate team considers it their calling as well as their privilege to care for your loved one.  MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care incorporates some of the most respected research-based care programs available. Our comprehensive care also includes assisting families to better understand and cope with the disease.

When a resident joins our community, we spend time with them and their family to learn as much as we can about their life before memory loss including their talents, vocation, and preferences.  From there, we create a daily care plan based on their needs and designed to stimulate or calm in response to their mood or situation.  We know that whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains and our calling is to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Among our many wellness programs and activities, MorningStar is proud to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market in which we serve, including MorningStar at Golden Ridge. Along with fund-raising for local chapters throughout the year, we participate in their core initiatives like The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge understands that receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia can be devastating to a family, but we want you to know we are here to help.  Please contact us to learn more about our community, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Good Communication With Your Doctor

March 06, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute on Aging wants everyone to know asking questions at medical appointments is a good thing but remember, a doctor only has so much time allocated to each patient so come prepared. Their advice includes asking for clarification whenever the doctor uses a term to describe a medical condition you are unfamiliar with. Also, be sure you understand how and when to take a new medication. For example if it should be taken with food, does that mean before, during or after a meal?

If your physician wants you to have a test done, find out why and what sort of preparation it will entail. Ask if there are any side effects or danger getting tested, and how long it will take to get the results. You may want to request a copy of the results, and if a specialist is doing the test, make sure they send the results to your physician.

Once results are in, your doctor will most likely make a diagnosis based on your symptoms, your physical exam, lab work and medical tests. Ask your doctor to describe the condition, how serious is it, if it is a long-term disease and/or curable, and what is the best course of treatment. If it includes medications, ask why you are taking it, the side effects and how long you will be on it.

If the doctor recommends surgery, ask why he/she is recommending it, the risks and benefits, and if there are alternatives to surgery. How expensive is the procedure, will you be hospitalized and how long is the recovery period? The Cleveland Clinic explains taking an active role in your medical care has many advantages and ensures you are equipped with the information you need for your utmost health and safety.

For trusted assisted living or independent living, Peoria and Glendale area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge.  We offer all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and beautifully appointed common areas both inside and out. It May Be Time To Try a New Hobby

March 03, 2023 by Karla A in Independent Living

For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a busier lifestyle. As relaxing as that sounds, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you worrying about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening and pot gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.

Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain have to coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.

Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require a commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

If you are looking for exceptional independent living, assisted living or memory care, MorningStar at Golden Ridge may be your answer. Dealing With Memory Loss

March 01, 2023 by Karla A

Do you feel as if memory problems are interfering with your life or have family members started to notice? Medical experts say there may be a distinction between a person noticing the memory loss and others becoming aware of it as this could signal a bigger problem and be an early sign of dementia.

The Harvard Medical School explains the best place to start understanding the problem is to talk to your doctor. While they may not have the proper training to do extensive screening for MCI (mild cognitive impairment), they can rule out other things causing your memory loss such as medications you take or a recent head injury. Steps you can take on your own to improve cognitive function include getting enough sleep each night, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress.

After your own physician has completed an examination, and nothing appears to explain your memory loss, it is time to see a specialist. They, or your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or hospital should be able to recommend a behavioral neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist. He or she will probably start with a series of written, on the computer, or oral tests to “assess memory, reasoning, attention, language, visual functions, motor functions, and social functions (such as empathy and knowing how to behave appropriately in social situations).”

They will check for “abnormalities in muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, eye movement, and the pupils' reaction to light, which can signal abnormalities in specific areas of the brain.” In addition, the doctor will check for Parkinson’s, a stroke or tumors, and will probably schedule a hearing and vision test. If indicated, you may have advanced testing such as PET scans or your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers checked for signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has suites devoted to the individualized care of those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our Reflections Neighborhood was designed from the ground up to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to celebrate and elevate life. How to Better Communicate With your Parent in Memory Care

February 22, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases like dementia are difficult to navigate if you are a child of a parent struggling with these diagnoses. Getting your parents or loved one to agree to simple everyday tasks may become frustrating and overwhelming for both of you in this situation. When it comes to taking care of themselves, a senior struggling with dementia may forget when they last bathed, had a meal, or reasons why they need to do these things in the first place. MorningStar of Arvada’s Assisted Living and Memory Care makes sure that at least one full-time licensed nurse is available for clinical concerns 24/7 in our community to make sure that your loved one’s health needs are being met. Not only this, but we can determine the exact level of care and assistance your parents may need through an initial medical assessment and cognitive evaluation so that your loved one is receiving the precise care for them.

An assisted living facility can help maintain routines for seniors with memory loss. If your parent or loved one is dealing with memory loss symptoms, you are probably worried they are not taking their medication consistently, eating regularly, or bathing routinely. This may lead to arguments between you two. MorningStar senior living keeps every resident on a manageable routine that helps to ease discomfort and to keep your loved one happy and healthy. Medication is monitored, healthy meals are provided and supervised, and any other assistance necessary is accommodated depending on your parent’s level of need.
