Retirement Communities Offer Seniors a Variety of Benefits

July 05, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

In the past, many elderly people wished to stay in their own homes for as long as possible. However, with the array of senior communities offered today, older adults are realizing the various benefits senior housing brings to their quality of life.

Studies are discovering senior living may contribute to a longer life as well as improved physical and emotional health than for those who remain in their own homes. After all, senior living provides a maintenance-free environment where residents no longer have to worry about the unexpected expenses of home repairs or never-ending maintenance. Retirement communities are designed around the needs of residents including their safety and security. Seniors also find a sense of community, which can be hard to achieve once you retire from a job or no longer drive.

Retirement communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge excel in offering residents best-in-class dining as well as social activities and special events to look forward to each day. Our fitness centers, swimming pool and exercise classes tailored to older adults allow you to stay as active as you like. Other amenities add to the vibrant environment and offer convenience such as beautiful gathering spaces, bistro bar, theater, salon and life enrichment rooms.

A look at our monthly calendar gives you an idea how many opportunities there are to stay engaged and have fun.  Games, trivia, live entertainment, movie nights, coffee groups and special interest clubs ensure there is something for everyone.  In addition, forming new friendships is generally not a problem as you are amongst a group of like-minded adults.

For residents in assisted living, our community gives them peace of mind knowing help is always at hand when needed with various care services. MorningStar’s residents receive 24/7 support and have access to licensed nurses, medication management, therapeutic services and more. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Couples are Welcome at MorningStar at Golden Ridge

July 01, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

When a couple’s health experiences are different, and one is healthier than the other, that person may assume the role of caregiver. As time evolves, the needs of the chronically ill spouse may become more complex and require daily care. This can be difficult for the healthier spouse, and even impact his/her own health and well-being.

To ensure both parties have an opportunity for the best quality of life; an assisted living community may be the answer. While leaving a family home and transitioning to community life is a big change, the transition is easier for the person with a spouse or partner by their side. Marissa Kirby, NHA, CHC, CHPC, and vice president of compliance at NEWGEN HEALTH, LLC, explains, “In many cases, particularly when a couple has been married for many years, the ability to live together can make or break their decision on whether or not to move to an assisted living facility.”

Many senior living communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge welcome couples; where we not only expertly and compassionately address the needs of a person living with a chronic illness or disability but also the needs of the healthier spouse. MorningStar’s assisted living provides the maintenance-free environment of independent living with the addition of care services for the ADLs (activities of daily living) tailored to the resident. We offer an array of floor plans starting with studios and one-bedroom options to larger two-bedroom, 1.5 bath suites. Suites feature a kitchenette with full-sized refrigerator, handicap-accessible bathroom, emergency call system and most have a stackable washer/dryer.  Moreover, MorningStar at Golden Ridge welcomes your four-footed furry family member.

Senior-friendly activities, resort-style amenities and built-in companionship can be a winning combination for many couples. Please contact MorningStar at Golden Ridge to learn more.  In addition to assisted living, we also offer independent living and specialized memory care at our beautiful community in Peoria, Arizona.

MorningStar has considered it a privilege and responsibility to “cast a new light” on senior living, inspired and empowered by our unique mission: to honor, to value, to invest. Benefits of Assisted Living

May 24, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Way too often people have misconceptions about assisted living communities. They think of the nursing facility where their grandparents may have spent their last years in and don’t want to put themselves or an older loved one into something like that. After all, haven’t we all earned a happy retirement?

Today’s assisted living communities are just that – a community. They provide a productive lifestyle with social interactions, safety and the proper support a person needs to help maintain their independence. Many also offer resort-style amenities like all-day, restaurant –style dining; housekeeping, fitness centers, salons, bistros and in-house theatres and chapels to give seniors a vibrant community to safely age in place.

Furthermore many older adults living alone say they feel socially isolated and lonely, which can put them at an increased risk for depression, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and more. When seniors transition to an assisted living community such as MorningStar of Littleton, they have opportunities to engage in wellness programs and entertaining activities and events. These can range from things like art classes to chair yoga and trivia games. Seniors also have an easier time eating healthier as they no longer need to shop, prepare, cook and clean-up meals.

Another reason senior living can make sense is seniors find their current home requires expensive modifications to make it safe for them. Throughout MorningStar’s community, the physical environment is designed to help residents stay safe and prevent falls. Suites are equipped with handicap-accessible bathrooms and 24/7 emergency call systems; and have lots of lighting and large windows. Dedicated care managers are available around-the-clock to lend a hand when needed, and provide compassionate daily help with the ADLs (activities of daily living).

To learn more about assisted living and whether it is the right decision for you or a loved one, we encourage you to set-up a tour of MorningStar of Littleton. MorningStar communities have proudly earned a reputation from residents and their families as some of the most trusted senior living Littleton, CO and the surrounding area offers.

Downsizing for a Move to an Assisted Living Community

May 17, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If your mom or dad has reached the time in their life where they need help with daily personal care activities, moving into an assisted living community is the perfect solution. You will have peace of mind knowing their needs are being met and they are safe and comfortable.  However, as much of the task of helping them move will likely fall on your shoulders, you have probably begun to realize that paring back a lifetime’s worth of possessions is a bit overwhelming.  Not to worry, there are many good books on the topic as well as useful tips on the Internet.

Organizing experts caution that the job can be complicated and fraught with emotion because as you see a pile of stuff to sort through and toss; your parents see treasures and memories.  Begin by creating a list of things your parents will need at their new place (keep in mind the size) and adding in the treasured items and personal belongings they want to keep.  If something is hard for them to part with, help them to think of a family member or friend they would like to give it to.  Also, remind them if they sell the item, they can use the money toward something better suited for their new home such as a smaller couch or coffee table.

Now the experts recommend going from room to room and start sorting by keeping, tossing, or donating piles.  In addition, rather than always asking your parents what they want to keep or get rid of, pare down the selection, and then ask them yes or no questions.  Presorting items also helps to avoid keeping lots of multiple items.

By measuring the size of your parent’s new suite, you can create a floor plan to realistically show how well their furnishings will fit.  Include the amount of cupboards and storage space they will have to help you know how much is too much.  Remember you do not want the new place to be so crowded that they can barely move safely about.

Keep in mind that if your parent is moving into a community such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, you will be treated to meals created by our Executive Chef served in our full-service dining room.  Also, our well-designed suites come equipped with blinds, carpeting, and overhead lighting.  Please visit our website to learn more about our beautiful independent living, assisted living and memory care community.

Our website even has a dedicated page for FAQs under our “First Steps” tab.  Here you will find answers to commonly asked questions such as age requirements (you must be at least 55 years old).  You will also discover important information on how a resident’s level of care is determined and our pricing structure.

FAQs include practical queries such as, yes, we will help you find a physician if you need one whether it is a primary care doctor or a specialty healthcare provider like an Occupational Therapist or Physical Therapist. And yes, we do provide transportation to doctor appointments as needed, and our transportation vehicles can accommodate a walker or wheelchair.

You and your family may also want to know about the type of training our staff receives, and we go over that too.   Care Managers complete an orientation program (including a three-day shadow), Radiance culture training, 8-hour dementia training, and ongoing training in specific care needs.  Each of our Medication Managers (QMAPs) is additionally trained in medication administration.

FAQs go over senior housing options such as Companion Living that allows two unrelated adults of the same sex to share a suite, and of course, married couples are welcome!  MorningStar at Golden Ridge also offers short-term stays based on availability that allows someone to try MorningStar to see if we are a good fit.

Moving to an Assisted Living Community

November 15, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

No matter what age we are, moving can be a big deal. Whether as a high schooler changing schools, or a retiree embarking on a new chapter to an assisted living community, moving is a big deal.

For older adults, a move to assisted living may include giving up a beloved family home. In this case, they probably have a whole house full of things and will need to downsize. That alone can be tough, as the person will most likely need to give up possessions they have had for years. For more on downsizing, the Internet offers a variety of suggestions to help you get started.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s team understands every resident’s move is unique and recognizes it for what it is – a major lifestyle transition. This is why we approach each move-in with the utmost sensitivity, and sincerely strive to nurture a good relationship right from the start. We seek to reinforce the positive aspects of community life, and do all we can to help the person embrace their new adventure.

Once your family decides assisted living at MorningStar is a good fit, we request a deposit to secure your chosen suite. From there our “House to Home” process begins in earnest. This includes getting together vital information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move such as a medical assessment and a physician’s plan of care, along with other documentation.

Practical advice from us includes recommending moving companies experienced in senior transitions. Furniture carts and dollies are available to borrow, if needed. We also offer packing tips and suggestions on the best items to bring. Most importantly we keep the lines of communication open as we know it is vital to a satisfactory experience.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s assisted living is designed to support and engage residents’ mind, body and spirit. Our wide array of amenities, hospitality and senior care services, wellness programs and activities help nurture residents’ independence for the best quality of life. It’s Important for Seniors to Keep Exercising

October 13, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Not only is physical exercise good for our heart and cognitive health but it can help older adults stay steady on their feet. Studies show regular physical activity can reduce the risk of falls in older adults at a high risk of falling by nearly one third.

Experts explain certain kinds of exercise helps increase muscle mass and bone strength as well as improve balance and coordination, fight off osteoporosis, and reduce the risk for fractures and broken bones. Some of the best exercises are known as weight-bearing, which require a person to carry their weight and work against gravity. Examples include walking, dancing, hiking, climbing stairs, jogging and playing tennis or basketball. Doctors say if you can manage it, increasing your pace during aerobics, jogging and power walking make the exercises even more effective at strengthening bone density.

Resistance exercises also work against gravity and help build muscle mass and improve bone strength. Strength training with weights, weight machines or resistance bands are all examples of exercises that rely on muscle contractions that tug on bones to stimulate them to bulk up. Along the same line, impact exercises such as jumping jacks and walking or running uphill have been shown to improve bone density fairly quickly.

Healthcare providers say to be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you’re taking medications that slow your coordination or throw off your balance. According to the Surgeon General, your optimal goal should be at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days, preferably daily.

For those of you looking for luxury independent living or assisted living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge. We make it easy to exercise with a fitness center and saline swimming pool along with a variety of wellness programs to keep you moving. Our maintenance-free lifestyle provides a chance to begin new adventures, meet a broader community of like-minded individuals and enjoy life to the fullest. Having Difficulty With Daily Activities Effects Quality of Life

October 09, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and that is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second-floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health issues.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we provide carefree retirement years. From healthy daily meals to wellness programs and activities, we have a whole range of services and amenities to ensure residents comfort and wellbeing.  Our care services include care managers, access to licensed nurses, and medication care managers.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about luxury assisted living in Peoria, AZ.

The Emotional Side of Moving Your Parent to Assisted Living

September 06, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Many adult children feel as if they let their parents down by moving them into an assisted living community. Mom or dad may have even asked years ago that you never put them into a “home,” and at the time, you made the promise; and/or you know families whose adult children have opened their home to their parents. You keep thinking your parents spent years caring for you, and now when they need help, you turn to strangers to provide the care they need.

Experts explain feelings of guilt are normal and moving a loved one to an assisted living community is probably one of the hardest decisions you will have to make as an adult. However, they quickly add it is important to remember they were not getting the assistance they needed at home. For their safety and wellbeing, they need to move to a place where they will receive the proper care.

Rather than waste time thinking you have let them down, think of it as giving them a better quality of life where they can safely age in place. Experts say stop comparing yourself to others who may have made different decisions; and most of all to remember “people who don’t help and don’t understand the situation aren’t qualified to make judgments or accusations.” Also, remember your loved one is getting older and chances are their health is not going to improve in the long-run regardless of where they are living. By getting the care they need, assisted living can offer a senior the feeling of independence.

For outstanding assisted living in Peoria, AZ, we encourage families to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge, a true destination for successful aging.  We provide all the amenities, wellness programs, and care services residents need for their comfort and wellbeing.  Our beautiful community offers stylish Casitas and suites for independent and assisted living in a range of floor plans to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, suites in our Reflections Neighborhood are devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. July 17, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Creating a sense of home for seniors who are transitioning to memory care is essential for their well-being and comfort. At MorningStar, we understand that seniors’ comfort with their living situation is just as important as the care they receive. By incorporating elements of familiarity into our memory care community, we help seniors to feel a deep sense of belonging and comfort in their new assisted living home.

By offering individualized care plans, the staff at MorningStar works to create predictable daily routines for seniors in assisted living and memory care. Incorporating lifestyles that mimic their previous routines provides a sense of stability for seniors struggling with memory loss and can help them feel more at ease in their environment.

July 14, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Once mom or dad has made the decision to move to an assisted living community, you will want it to go as smoothly as possible and this includes helping them choose the right place to meet today’s needs as well as the next 5 to 10 years. In some cases, a move to an assisted living community is precipitated by a worsening medical condition or an injury due to a fall and the time to mentally prepare oneself is short. This is why MorningStar at Golden Ridge has a guide to help families navigate through such a momentous change in a senior’s life.

Googling senior living in the Peoria, AZ area will bring up quite a few hits so experts recommend narrowing down the candidates to 3 or 4 communities that offer assisted living in a location that works for your family.  Reading information on their website and contacting them for pricing information can help narrow down the choices to those you wish to tour.

Touring a community is a real eye-opener and the Internet offers many tips on what to look for during your visit. At MorningStar, our online community assistant allows you to inquire about pricing and availability as well as set up a tour. We recommend setting aside a couple of hours for a tour and getting ready for a lot of details. Take notes and bring any questions you would like to ask. Focus on the overall ambiance, and take a look at our Monthly Expense Comparison and Senior Communities Comparison Chart beforehand to weigh value against cost. We also advise revisiting your top one or two choices, and remember many seniors find a trial stay; we offer them for up to a full month, is a good way to find out if it is the right community.

How to Improve Communication with Your Doctor

June 12, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Although it is first-hand, it is not always easy to describe to a doctor what is going on regarding medical problems. Describing various symptoms is quite all-together different from getting the results of actual lab tests or a doctor’s opinion after a physical exam.

Relating symptoms clearly can help narrow down the problem, and medical experts share some advice on how to best do it. They start by telling patients to skip the medical jargon and just use their own words to describe what they are feeling.

Dr. Lisa Ravindra, an assistant professor in the department of internal medicine and a primary care physician at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, says, "Avoid using vague terms for timing like 'for a while' or stating that a symptom occurs 'once in a while' since these mean different things to different people." She explains it is helpful to be as precise as possible when talking about symptoms including the amount of time you have had them for such as three days, or on and off for a week. Doctors say it is helpful to rate your pain from one to ten.

Other helpful things you can do include using a blood pressure monitor to chart your blood pressure, and if you feel feverish, take your temperature. Keep track of other important symptoms such as sore throat, earache, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. Be sure to mention unexpected weight loss, fatigue when doing things you typically do, or specific type and location of pain, i.e. a constant, sharp pain in the front of the right knee. If you have a chronic condition, doctors say it helps to keep a journal of symptoms to discuss with your doctor during your next visit.

The Move to MorningStar at Golden Ridge

May 12, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ may be your answer. Along with beautiful surroundings, we provide an extensive range of amenities, wellness programs, care services and more.

When a loved one needs more care than they can get in their own home, it may be time to start thinking about a move to assisted living. If your family is new to the concept of senior living and all it means, please know that MorningStar will work with you each step of the way to help you make informed decisions, and make the eventual move-in process easier.

To start with, we understand that for your parent or elderly relative, the move is a major lifestyle transition, which is why we approach each move-in with great sensitivity. One way we do this is to try and nurture a relationship from the start that reinforces the positive aspects of community life and tries to help the person envision the many possibilities of a new adventure.

Once your family puts down a deposit to secure a chosen suite, our “House to Home” plan goes into full swing. This starts by collecting pertinent information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move-in including a medical assessment and physician’s care plan for each new assisted living and memory care resident.

On a more practical level, we offer packing tips including what items are most important to bring such as furnishings and personal belongings that are most significant emotionally, nostalgically as well as functionally. We want the resident’s new “home” to bring them comfort and joy, which is why we suggest, if possible, furnishings should be arranged similar to their prior residence. Keep in mind; it is especially helpful to those with low vision or cognitive impairment.

This is just a start of the on-going support we extend to new residents and their families. We are ready to answer any questions you may have and direct you to our website for contact information as well as other pertinent details. MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding independent living,
assisted living and memory care.

As a vibrant 55+ community, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has stylish casitas and suites offering seniors a choice of independent living, assisted living or memory care. Community life solves the problem of loneliness as well as problems with meal preparation many elderly adults experience, often resorting to frozen meals or fast food. MorningStar residents enjoy beautifully prepared meals, served restaurant-style and eaten in a relaxed, community setting. No longer driving? No worries as we offer scheduled transportation to area shopping as well as trips to the doctors and running errands.

We also know it is important for seniors to continue to learn and contribute, which is why we offer a wide range of meaningful wellness programs, activities and entertainment. Moreover, if we do not have a program or activities that attract your interest or offer a hobby you would love to explore, we encourage you to start a club.

Signs Mom or Dad May Need More Care

October 17, 2022 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Sometimes it is obvious an elderly parent needs more care such as having a bad fall or mismanaging medications resulting in a trip to the emergency room. Experts say even without such an overt situation, there are signs to look for suggesting a parent or another loved one may do better in an assisted living community.

Warning signs include changes in the person’s behavior. For example, if mom has always been tidy but her home now looks neglected or smells, and dirty dishes are piled in the sink, she may not be handling things well. Other signs include a recent weight loss or gain and changes in grooming habits. Take note if she is having mobility problems or unexplained bruises or cuts, which might indicate falls.

Experts say consider other things too, such as social isolation and the person’s inability to get around on their own if they no longer drive.  Also, check the refrigerator for signs of spoiled food or a lack of food.

Even a few of these things may be a sign they could benefit from the services of an assisted living community like MorningStar at Golden Ridge, a true home with an atmosphere of love, kindness and compassion. Along with a broad range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and wellness programs, our private suites come in a choice of floor plans including studio and one- and two-bedroom configurations.

Trusted Assisted Living in Oregon

September 16, 2022 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Have you decided for you or a loved one to move into an assisted living facility? The decision is never an easy feat. Picking the right assisted living community that meets your needs and level of care perfectly is equally as daunting. Evaluate your current needs and wants in a senior living or memory care facility. Keep these questions and advice below in mind so that you can be self-assured that you have found the right place to call home.

It is important to consider not only your current care needs but your future ones as well. No one wants to think about memory loss or the other discomforts that come with old age, but these changes are a fact of life. Preparing for what may lie ahead can guarantee that you will be taken care of properly for years to come. Therefore it is best to consider senior living facilities that offer retirement homes, assisted living, and memory care. Communities that offer these assisted  living arrangements under one roof can ensure that you stay comfortable throughout your stay. You don’t have to worry about jumping from home to home when your needs change.

MorningStar provides these three levels of care. Not only that, but MorningStar of Beaverton considers the needs of every resident. Upon meeting, our Wellness Director will assess your current health, and review your medical history to ascertain how we can best meet your needs. At that time, we will also learn your preferences, as well as normal routines, to develop a care plan customized to you. Your plan will also be regularly re-evaluated to coincide with your changing needs as your time with us extends. Staying at one facility ensures that your files do not become lost. You can build a hearty relationship with your community, your caregivers, and your neighbors which is less possible through multiple stays at different facilities.

While MorningStar may be new to Beaverton, our team is highly experienced in serving seniors. We understand how to provide residents with a quality-of-life other assisted living communities simply cannot match. Every team member, regardless of role, completes three foundational one-day training as part of joining the MorningStar family as well as training in Radiance (our culture and customer service initiative) and Lavender Sky (our dementia care philosophy and approach to programming). Some states in which we operate require care managers to be certified in both CPR and First Aid. Continuing education is conducted regularly, and our Med Tech (QMAPs) are additionally trained in medication administration.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting. Contact us today to see for yourself our exceptional offering for independent and assisted living in Beaverton, Oregon.

Learn to Live with Less

June 06, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

Known as the “Minimalists,” Ryan Nicodemus and Joshua Fields Millburn spend their time helping people to learn to live with less. They say a typical house contains as many as 300,000 items; and their advice is to rid yourself of items that do not add value to your life. While obviously easier said than done, if you are an older adult who is trying to downsize for a move to senior housing, the following tips may help.

One suggestion is to start by decluttering; not only does it give you more space in your new home but living around clutter has been linked to anxiety and stress. When you throw away or donate stuff cluttering up your home, it gives room for the things you really like. Less stuff lightens your load and helps you get into the habit of not buying things you don’t need. Not only does this mindset save money, but Fields Millburn explains, "Understanding the why behind simplifying gives us the leverage we need to begin to let go and helps us understand what is excess.”

The Minimalists recommend letting go of items you are hanging on to under the “just in case” category. Remember most things can be easily replaced if needed and in the meantime your load will be that much lighter.

Other suggestions include getting rid of blurry or duplicate photos, junk mail, documents and paperwork no longer needed, and old magazines and newspapers. If you want to further reduce your physical load, scan photos as well as paperwork you wish to save. Throw away broken or damaged items, or missing parts. If you have two hair dryers, choose one to keep and one to donate. Do the same with other duplicates. Get rid of books you will never read, clothes that don’t fit or are uncomfortable, and stuff you never use. Do the same with supplies and equipment from hobbies or sports you are no longer interested in; and if you are retired, downsize your professional wardrobe. Use this mindset when going through the rest of your household items.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ is a beautiful senior living community offering older adults a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and security. We have 38 Casitas for independent living (quadruplexes with attached garages) and 65 private assisted living suites in a range of floor plans as well as compassionate memory care.
