Hearing Loss is Common Among Seniors

April 03, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

Find Holistic Memory Care Near You

March 24, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Holistic memory care options for seniors with Alzheimer's disease are becoming increasingly important as an approach to treating a memory loss condition. By addressing all aspects of the individual's well-being, focusing on their strengths, providing personalized care, promoting a positive environment, and offering a team approach, holistic memory care has been shown to improve outcomes for seniors and provide them with the highest quality of life possible. Memory care that focuses on creating a positive environment is conducive to the individual's well-being. This holistic approach to memory care includes a comfortable living space, engaging activities that promote mental stimulation and socialization, and opportunities for spiritual enrichment. The Benefits of Companion Living in Assisted Living Communities

March 22, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Living with a partner provides a sense of companionship, familiarity, and emotional support for seniors in need of memory care. After years of living together, seniors may not want to be separated from their partners, especially during a time when they may be experiencing health challenges or the need for assistance with daily living tasks. Companion living allows seniors to continue to share their lives together while receiving the care they need. However, this isn’t the only benefit of companion living for seniors. MorningStar offers companion living options for seniors in need of memory care because of the benefits of living with familiar friends or family members, the cost benefits, and enhanced safety and security.

MorningStar offers Companion Living in all of our communities, where two unrelated people of the same sex share a suite, whether in independent living, assisted living, or memory care. Couples can also live together in their own suites, surrounded by their own treasured possessions. Alternatively, suites can be shared by friends who simply enjoy one another’s company. Not only does this living arrangement enhance life through its camaraderie, but it also extends savings.

Companion living provides seniors struggling with memory loss with the opportunity to live with their partners and continue to enjoy each other's company. This can be especially important for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia who have been together for many years and may have difficulty adjusting to a new living situation without their partner. Companion living also provides socialization opportunities with other residents and staff members, reducing the risk of isolation and loneliness.

Companions living in assisted living communities can also provide enhanced safety and security for seniors and their partners because each partner will have closer attention to their loved one and can notice changes in behaviors and health. Assisted living communities like MorningStar are designed to provide a safe and secure memory care environment for residents. Staff members are available 24/7 to respond to emergencies, and many communities have security features such as locked entrances and video surveillance.

Are You Worried About the Cost of Memory Care in Arvada, Colorado?

March 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Caring for a parent or loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be challenging, time-consuming, and cause financial stress. At MorningStar in Arvada, Colorado, we understand the importance of providing high-quality memory care to our residents, and we work with families to make sure they have the resources they need to pay for care. If you are considering memory care for your parents but are unsure how to cover the costs, we encourage you to explore the payment options we offer here at MorningStar and how they can help you pay for the care for your loved one’s memory care needs.

When it comes to paying for assisted living, financial resources are available beyond retirement savings and investments. If your loved one owns a home, has veteran benefits, or has a life insurance policy, these are some of the ways in which payment for memory care can be possible outside private pay options.

The equity built up in a private home is typically a retiree’s largest asset, making the proceeds from selling extremely helpful when transitioning to a senior community. However, selling a home in a timely manner can be challenging and time-consuming. This is especially true when adult children are not living near to assist. Many families find it helpful to work with a Real Estate Professional experienced with all aspects of selling a senior’s home. From packing and cleaning to listing and selling, ElderLife’s agents are ready to assist with the entire process to simplify a senior transition. To be connected with a local agent, contact us today.

Whole life and universal life policies build a reserve of cash through interest-earning excess premiums. In some situations, life insurance can be a source of ready funds through cash surrender, death benefit loans, accelerating death benefits, life (or viatical) settlements, or even selling the policy on the open market for immediate cash. Before acting on any of these methods, consult a financial advisor, as there may be tax consequences. Life Care Funding can also help you determine whether a policy can be converted.

Contact us today if you want to know more about the built-in companionship, predictable budgeting, and memory care Arvada Co has seen. MorningStar Senior Living Retirement Homes in Arvada Colorado takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. Whether it’s fulfilling a calling, finding a new opportunity through volunteerism, or spending time with friends and loved ones and relaxing, contact us to schedule a tour of our memory care community near you.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Assisted Living in Peoria, AZ

March 10, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Some people think a move to an assisted living community signals an end to their independence but nothing could be further from the truth. At MorningStar at Golden Ridge we respect the fact that seniors have spent a lifetime living independently, raising families, working jobs, and making their own decisions, and consider it our job to continue to help them lead full, purposeful lives.

We know many of the challenges that come all too often with aging. Worsening medical conditions, failing eyesight, hearing impairments and mobility problems as well as the death of a spouse or friends can make it tough for seniors to live on their own. Isolation and loneliness can bring on feelings of hopelessness and depression; have a negative impact on mental health, and even affect quality of life.

As one of MorningStar’s assisted living residents, you will receive the personal daily care you need to help maintain your independence. Our services include help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) such as bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, eating and more. Our trained care managers are there to help navigate any changes in your health and ensure you get the proper level of care you need.

MorningStar’s scheduled transportation services, medication management, and pharmacy services make it easy to safely get to important doctor visits, and keep prescriptions filled and dispensed as needed. Residents also enjoy the built-in companionship and numerous perks of community living, including all day dining with healthy and delicious meals served restaurant style.  Just some of the amenities include fitness centers, bistro bar, theater/chapel, and saline swimming pool with hot tub.

Located near medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services, MorningStar at Golden Ridge provides trusted senior living with predictable budgeting, freedom from endless home maintenance and opportunities for new friendships. Good Communication With Your Doctor

March 06, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute on Aging wants everyone to know asking questions at medical appointments is a good thing but remember, a doctor only has so much time allocated to each patient so come prepared. Their advice includes asking for clarification whenever the doctor uses a term to describe a medical condition you are unfamiliar with. Also, be sure you understand how and when to take a new medication. For example if it should be taken with food, does that mean before, during or after a meal?

If your physician wants you to have a test done, find out why and what sort of preparation it will entail. Ask if there are any side effects or danger getting tested, and how long it will take to get the results. You may want to request a copy of the results, and if a specialist is doing the test, make sure they send the results to your physician.

Once results are in, your doctor will most likely make a diagnosis based on your symptoms, your physical exam, lab work and medical tests. Ask your doctor to describe the condition, how serious is it, if it is a long-term disease and/or curable, and what is the best course of treatment. If it includes medications, ask why you are taking it, the side effects and how long you will be on it.

If the doctor recommends surgery, ask why he/she is recommending it, the risks and benefits, and if there are alternatives to surgery. How expensive is the procedure, will you be hospitalized and how long is the recovery period? The Cleveland Clinic explains taking an active role in your medical care has many advantages and ensures you are equipped with the information you need for your utmost health and safety.

For trusted assisted living or independent living, Peoria and Glendale area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge.  We offer all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and beautifully appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides individualized memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

It May Be Time To Try a New Hobby

March 03, 2023 by Karla A in Independent Living

For many, retirement means an end to a long career and a busier lifestyle. As relaxing as that sounds, research shows it is important for people to continue to feel actively engaged regardless of their age. One interesting and fun way to do it is with a hobby as they are a good way to keep our brains sharp, relieve stress and anxiety, and lessen obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

One example of an all-around hobby is gardening. Not only does the person benefit from their labor in the form of flowers, fruits or vegetables, experts say gardening offers physical and mental benefits. These include reducing stress, giving the person a sense of achievement, getting out into fresh air and staying fit. If you worrying about the physical work involved in gardening, there are tools and methods designed to make it easier. Raised beds eliminate the need for bending and kneeling on the ground as does vertical gardening and pot gardening that keeps things at arms’ reach.

Another hobby beneficial for seniors is playing a musical instrument. For instance, when playing the piano, the hands and brain have to coordinate. The bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain and stimulate a whole range of brain functions that provide numerous benefits. If you aren’t musical, consider knitting as it offers the same two-sided movements along with the satisfaction of creating a baby blanket for a little one or a pair of socks for a homeless shelter.

Working on jigsaw puzzles, coloring, birdwatching and photography are all calming, brain stimulating, fun activities. Experts say many hobbies do not require a commitment, and if at first you don’t find something to keep your interest, give another one a try.

If you are looking for exceptional independent living, assisted living or memory care, MorningStar at Golden Ridge may be your answer. We offer seniors a safe place to socialize and make new friends as well as activities and wellness programs to enjoy life to the fullest. Amenities include all-day dining, full-service dining rooms, salon, pool, fitness centers, life enrichment rooms, scheduled transportation and more. Dealing With Memory Loss

March 01, 2023 by Karla A

Do you feel as if memory problems are interfering with your life or have family members started to notice? Medical experts say there may be a distinction between a person noticing the memory loss and others becoming aware of it as this could signal a bigger problem and be an early sign of dementia.

The Harvard Medical School explains the best place to start understanding the problem is to talk to your doctor. While they may not have the proper training to do extensive screening for MCI (mild cognitive impairment), they can rule out other things causing your memory loss such as medications you take or a recent head injury. Steps you can take on your own to improve cognitive function include getting enough sleep each night, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and reducing stress.

After your own physician has completed an examination, and nothing appears to explain your memory loss, it is time to see a specialist. They, or your local Alzheimer’s Association chapter or hospital should be able to recommend a behavioral neurologist or a geriatric psychiatrist. He or she will probably start with a series of written, on the computer, or oral tests to “assess memory, reasoning, attention, language, visual functions, motor functions, and social functions (such as empathy and knowing how to behave appropriately in social situations).”

They will check for “abnormalities in muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, senses, eye movement, and the pupils' reaction to light, which can signal abnormalities in specific areas of the brain.” In addition, the doctor will check for Parkinson’s, a stroke or tumors, and will probably schedule a hearing and vision test. If indicated, you may have advanced testing such as PET scans or your cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers checked for signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has suites devoted to the individualized care of those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our Reflections Neighborhood was designed from the ground up to provide a secure setting, which allows residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  Our specialized memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the essence of the individual, and to celebrate and elevate life. How to Help Seniors in Memory Care Arvada Better Prepare for Weather Changes in Colorado

February 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Located in Colorado’s Front Range, Arvada is only a 20-minute drive to Downtown Denver, close to many parks and green spaces, and convenient to great restaurants, shops, and the 1st Bank Center. Colorado is a great place for seniors who are looking for calming nature and fun family attractions and cooler climates. However, as we age the colder weather can start to impact our health if precautions are not taken promptly. That’s why MorningStar of Arvada offers the most comforting memory care Arvada Co has to offer for seniors looking for all inclusive memory care in Colorado.

Assisted living communities like MorningStar of Arvada are designed around the various needs of older adults and provide senior-friendly activities and companionship with like-minded adults of a similar age. As an assisted living resident in memory care, you receive the help needed to maintain your independence and get back to living life to the fullest. Our Reflections Neighborhood offers all-inclusive care for seniors in memory care with dementia and has its own common rooms and enclosed courtyard.

While it’s important for seniors to spend time outdoors and get fresh air and sunlight, it’s also important to be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially with Spring around the corner. The weather can be unpredictable sometimes, but at MorningStar of Arvada seniors and their families can rest assured that MorningStar offers the most equipped memory care that Arvada co has to offer.

Seniors have a harder time regulating their body temperatures and it becomes even more difficult for elders with dementia to feel comfortable in various temperatures. In colder climates, such as in Colorado, memory care residents may be familiar with the need to dress heavier with more layers. However, seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or dementia may be unaware of changing temperatures in the Springtime and not plan their outfits accordingly. Seniors Who Are Lonely Are at Higher Risk for Serious Medical Conditions

February 13, 2023 by Karla A in Assisted Living

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), statistics show seniors who report feelings of loneliness are at higher risk for several diseases including dementia and are more likely to experience premature death. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) says “one-third of adults aged 45 and older feel lonely, and nearly one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated.” Social isolation is a lack of social connections and a result of a person living alone, having a spouse and/or other supportive friends or relatives die, or suffering from chronic illness. Other related problems include a lack of transportation, mobility impairment and untreated hearing loss, which all limit the senior’s opportunity to engage with others.

AARP Research surveyed adults 45 and older regarding their feelings of loneliness. Of those respondents who rated their health as excellent, only 25 percent said they were lonely. Among participants who said their health was poor, 55 percent reported feeling lonely. The CDC also says studies find social isolation or loneliness is linked to a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke as well as a 50% percent increased risk of dementia.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our goal is to promote physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connectivity. We provide everything seniors need for quality of life and to safely and comfortably age in place. Along with luxury amenities, and care and hospitality services; our signature wellness programs and activities are designed to engage and encourage residents to live full productive lives. The Importance of Keeping Both Your Body and Brain Fit

February 10, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

Research supports the importance of seniors staying physically fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ may be your answer.  Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, nutritious meals, pool, fitness centers, library, life enrichment rooms, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides holistic care to those with memory impairment. Alzheimer’s Patients Benefit From Pet Therapy

February 08, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Pet therapy (also known as animal-assisted therapy) is used for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia to alleviate feelings of boredom, loneliness and helplessness. Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard trained geriatrician and author of “The Eden Alternative,” said bringing in children, plants and animals helps to invigorate long-term care by “incorporating companionship, a sense of purpose, variety and spontaneity into the day-to-day experience of aged care residents.”

While studies show therapy dogs and other animals are useful in stimulating social interaction and easing agitation in dementia patients, experts say it should be done with specially trained pets to get the most benefit. Moreover, the animal should be matched to the setting as well as to the person. Pet therapists say dogs are generally the easiest to train as they are comfortable interacting with a variety of people.

The benefits of animal therapy to dementia patients include the unconditional love and acceptance animals freely give out as well as the physical touch from the pet contact. Also, these relationships do not require much in the way of communication skills, which are often difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers say other benefits of pet therapy include an increase in physical activity and an unexpected improvement in a person’s appetite after a visit from an animal as well as an overall calming effect.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge our goal is to provide the best senior living in the Peoria area, which includes compassionate, loving memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our unique approach to memory care is designed to nurture, support and respect the essence of the individual regardless of the level of memory loss.  By leveraging the power of art, music, dance, and aromatherapy as well as animals, we strive to heal and comfort our most tender residents.
