Food Trends for 2022

January 14, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

Have you heard of carbon emission labeling? Experts say the trend is increasing globally and is a movement intended to reduce the carbon footprint of agriculture. While some of the new products out on the market may seem strange or distasteful, experts say many of them will likely be the foods of the future.

Companies claiming to be carbon neutral (also referred to as “net zero” means emissions are generated but offset by the same amount elsewhere) are now selling products such as milk and eggs in mainstream grocery stores. Other foods in the category of strange include more than a 100 companies around the world experimenting and selling cell-cultured or lab-grown meat without an animal. Cultured meat was first sold in Singapore but as the U.S. Food and Drug has cleared regulatory restrictions, consumers in our country can expect to see it on grocery shelves in 2022.

Currently several American companies are producing lab-grown, bean-free coffee and cacao bean-free chocolate. Another source of protein used for plant-based meat and dairy alternatives we will see more of comes from the sea. Microalgae protein include sea plants like zoster marina, which is a seagrass known as the rice of the sea and is on its way to becoming another new “superfood.”

Non-dairy milk options are growing and now include a wide variety of nuts as well as grains, hemp, flax and quinoa. Plant-based cheeses taste better than ever and are made from nuts such as almonds and cashews, soy or coconut-based vegan options. Other offerings we will see more of on grocery shelves include foods enriched with probiotics, prebiotics, vitamin C, vitamin D, zinc, or mushroom powders.

MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community with an array of amenities, wellness programs, and concierge and care services. Our senior living options include assisted living and independent living for carefree retirement years. To Reach Your Weight Goal, Pay Attention to Portion Size

November 17, 2021 by Karla A

In addition to the types of food we eat, dieticians say it is also important to pay attention to portion size when attempting to shed a few pounds as it will help us reach our goal.  When trying to diet, sticking to nutrient-dense, relatively low-calorie foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meats and poultry are your best choices; but no matter how healthy a food is, you still should not overconsume.

This is where portion control plays a part.  Amy Gorin, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats, a collection of curated meal plans, grocery lists and nutrition tip sheets, explains that while foods like almond butter and dark chocolate are good for us, they should be eaten in moderation and in proper portions.  In other words, the bottom-line is a large chocolate bar should not be consumed in one sitting.

However, to complicate matters, experts explain that in many cases, strictly following portion sizes suggested on the container would differ from what a registered dietician would recommend.  The problem with across-the-board portion sizes is they do not address age group, gender, and activity level of the particular person.  Add to that, portion size is a critical component to actually losing weight especially in foods that are higher in calories.

Also eating the right amount of food helps to maintain a balanced gut. The Harvard Health Men’s Watch, suggests “a healthy gut microbiome stimulates the body’s immune system and may shield against an array of chronic diseases, including: cancer, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.”

MorningStar of Beaverton provides residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting.  Our beautiful community offers assisted living and memory care with a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need including a nutritional, delicious dining service.  Contact us or visit our website to see what sets us apart from other senior living communities in Beaverton, OR.

With Winter Coming, Be on the Lookout for Vitamin D Deficiency

November 15, 2021 by Karla A

Medical experts say to be on the lookout for a vitamin D deficiency this winter as days are shorter and we typically spend less time outdoors. One problem can be the use of sunblock, which limits the body’s ability to make vitamin D. Studies also have found seniors to be at an additional risk for the deficiency as the older we get, the harder time our bodies have in absorbing the vitamin, and is why doctors recommend a higher daily dose for older adults.

Moreover medical conditions can interfere with the absorption of vitamin D such as inflammatory bowel disease or cystic fibrosis, as can diets like vegan and other vegetarian options or avoiding dairy altogether because of lactose intolerance. Another group that may be lacking in vitamin D is individuals with a BMI over 30. Dietitian Ali Webster, director of research and nutrition communications at International Food Information Council in Washington, D.C says, “body fat can isolate vitamin D instead of spreading it to other parts of the body.”

To avoid a deficiency, experts say to include foods high in vitamin D in your diet such as fatty fish, fortified dairy products and non-dairy milks, eggs, liver and mushrooms. Many cereals and orange juice are also fortified with vitamin D. Signs of a vitamin D deficiency include: musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and listlessness, frequent infections and illnesses, osteoporosis, lower back pain, mood changes and muscle aches or pains. Experts say if you are concerned about any of these symptoms, to see your healthcare provider.

Best Hobbies & Activities for Seniors

October 31, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If you are retired, you probably have more time on your hands so why not try something new or something you have always wanted to do. This should include adding a physical activity to your daily routine as studies find many adults 65 years and older spend up to 10 hours a day sitting or lying down. Some of the best exercises for seniors are Nordic walking, swimming, golf, tai chi, and yoga. Experts say focus on improving your strength, balance and flexibility and check with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise routine.

In addition you may want to include activities or hobbies that bring you into social contact with others. This can be done by taking a class online or in person. Suggestions include joining a book club, learning to play an instrument or taking an art or photography class.

Retirement means more time to learn how to cook or to be more adventurous in the types of food you prepare. It can be lots of fun and help you eat healthier and save money. Take the challenge by learning to cook foods from around the world, and then share the fruits of your labor by inviting family or friends over.

Birdwatching is a hobby that ties in several objectives. You get out into nature, which has been shown to lower anxiety; learn something new, and get physically active. Moreover if you join a birdwatching club, you get to meet people who enjoy the same things you do. For anyone wanting to improve their photography skills, shooting pictures of birds is a good way to do it; and the hobby offers a great activity to do while traveling.

Other enjoyable hobbies, which can help seniors cognitively, include putting together challenging traditional jigsaw puzzles or 3-D ones. Crossword and Sudoku puzzles, trivia games, chess and other brain games are also mentally challenging. Another hobby becoming more popular with seniors is online gaming that can improve memory and enhance cognitive skills.

The MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community is situated on 8.8 acres and offers seniors a welcoming, comfortable home for carefree retirement years. In addition to independent living and assisted living, we also provide compassionate memory care for our most tender residents. Please visit our website to learn more about the area’s most trusted community.

Age can Diminish Hand-Eye Coordination

October 11, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

We use hand-eye coordination constantly for all kinds of everyday activities that rely on dexterity and reaction time such as driving, cooking or maintaining our safety by grabbing a handrail. Coordination between what our eyes take in and the signal the brain sends to our arms and hands declines with age. Experts say hand-eye coordiantion is an important skill, and one we need to help maintain our independence but like other cognitive skills, it can be trained and improved.

Dr. Andrew Budson, a neurologist and chief of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at VA Boston Healthcare System, explains hand-eye coordination involves our reflexes, speed and accuracy, which diminishes due to vision loss, poor health or changes in brain wiring. Other reasons for the loss include ministrokes in the brain that disrupt connections in important brain coordination centers as well as age-related loss of dopamine, which helps regulate movement and coordination.

Researchers reported on a relationship between advanced age and a decline in fine motor skills in a 2014 study. It found “age-related changes in the structure, function, and biochemistry of the brain affect motor skills; which can account for the decline in hand-eye coordination seen in people as they age.” Additionally neuromuscular communication and changes in visual perception are not as strong as when we are young and may also affect hand-eye coordination.

Exercises to improve hand-eye reflexes include swimming and tai chi along with activities such as playing catch and juggling. Experts recommend discussing the problem with your physician as they can refer you to a physical therapist who will suggest a range of activities designed to improve hand-eye coordination.

The MorningStar of Arvada senior living community offers carefree retirement years with 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites in various configurations including spacious studios and one- and two-bedroom floor plans. Sciatica Pain is More Common as We Age

October 03, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The Mayo Clinic explains sciatica refers to the pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which branches from the lower back through the hips and buttocks and down each leg. It generally affects only one side of the body. Age is a common factor in sciatica as the older we get, nerves and muscles slowly begin to degrade. It is estimated almost 10 percent of the US population has suffered from sciatic pain at some time in their life.

One reason seniors experience sciatica is because the “discs (cartilage) in-between the vertebrae (bones) in the spine become less plump and loses height. Typically we lose about 1 centimeter in height every 10 years after the age of 40 and most of this height loss comes from the discs in the spine.” Doctors advise if your sciatica pain does not resolve in a week or becomes progressively worse resulting in sudden, severe pain in your low back or leg and numbness or muscle weakness in your leg, seek immediate medical care.

Treatment for sciatica typically includes over-the-counter pain medication or prescription drugs such as anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants. Physical therapy is often recommended and the patient is shown a series of exercises designed to lessen pain and prevent reoccurring sciatica pain. Massage can also be used to decrease inflammation by promoting blood flow to the area. Heat and cold compresses both help as heat relaxes the muscles and cold reduces swelling and numbs the pain.

Epsom salts, which have a high magnesium content that is absorbed through the skin, have a positive effect on the muscles and circulatory system when add to a relaxing soak in the tub. Research additionally has found turmeric to be one of the best spices for reducing inflammation. Along with the gentle exercises prescribed by your healthcare provider, it is important to pay attention to your posture when sitting, standing or walking. Experts say certain yoga exercises are beneficial and may help prevent future episodes.

Fall is a Great Time to Begin a Healthier Lifestyle

September 26, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

For large parts of the country, 2021 turned out to be a very hot summer. Now that fall is here, most of us can look forward to more moderate temperatures, making it easier to enjoy the outdoors. Medical experts say spending time outside has a beneficial impact on our mental health as well as boost our immune system; and a nice sunny fall day can increase our vitamin D. In addition, engaging in many types of exercise is not only more enjoyable but safer in temperate weather.

Another healthy habit to incorporate into our fall routine is getting a flu shot. While we all know the dangers of COVID-19, influenza can also be deadly. Dr. Phillip Kadaj, an internal medicine specialist based in Midland, Michigan, says it is still important to remember to "Wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizer when needed, wear a mask when in indoor public places and try to avoid large crowds in tight quarters unless absolutely necessary."

Fall is also time for healthy, immune boosting vegetables and fruits. Pumpkins are a good example of a tasty, nutritional vegetable. They are high in beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A, as well as vitamins C, E, potassium and fiber. The versatile pumpkin can be used in everything from chili to soups, pastas, breads, drinks and yummy desserts. Moreover don’t forget to save the seeds as they are high in plant-based protein, fiber and magnesium.

Dieticians recommend considering healthier alternatives to traditional snacks on game day such as fresh vegetables and dip, homemade trail mix, hummus with veggies and fresh fruit. Not only are they more heart healthy but may help take off a few inches from your waistline.

The senior living community of MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers 38 Casitas (quadraplexes with attached garages) for independent living and another 65 suites for assisted living. Want an Easy Way to Remember Important Medical Information?

September 13, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The WebMD website recently published an article regarding using mnemonic devices (techniques that help improve your ability to remember something) to remember important medical information. One example is “FAST” to help you recognize stroke symptoms. Starting with F for face drooping (ask the person to smile to check); A for arm weakness (to test, have them raise both arms); S to evaluate any speech difficulty (test by having them repeat a simple sentence), to T telling you it is time to call 911.

To help you remember the order of steps for performing CPR, use “CAB.” The C stands for chest compressions, A for airway, and B for breathing. Experts say you should give 100-120 compressions per minute over the middle of the person’s chest to help blood pump to the brain. After 30 chest compressions, tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. WebMD says if you are trained in CPR, you can include rescue breaths.

Another important first aid technique is to know how to stop bleeding. Physicians advise you to remember the ABC’s for injury. It starts with Alert: Call for help or have someone do it for you, if possible. Bleeding: Find the location of the bleeding wound. Compress: Apply pressure to stop the flow of blood using a tourniquet. If you don’t have one, place bandages or a clean cloth on the wound and push directly on the wound with your hands.

To treat injuries such as knee or ankle sprains, use RICE. Starting with R, which stands for Rest and protecting the injured area, I for Ice should is used to stop or lessen swelling and pain. C stands for Compression. Doctors say to wrap the area (not too tightly) with an elastic bandage to lessen swelling. The E in RICE stands for Elevate the injured area at or above heart level with pillows when lying down to alleviate swelling.

Reset Your Internal Clock for a Good Night’s Sleep

August 15, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As more and more research shows, getting enough sleep each night is important for everything from better mental health to better physical health. Some studies have even reported findings of an increased risk for Alzheimer’s in people who routinely have sleep problems.

If you are someone who has trouble getting to sleep or sleeping through the night, the US News & World Report recently published several tips from sleep expert to help reset your sleep clock and improve your sleep habits. They recommend beginning with reestablishing waking and bedtime rituals by going to bed at the same time each night and waking up the same time. It may even be a good idea to eat meals at the same time. Your bedroom should be dark and use a light-blocking sleep mask if needed. Also keep your bedroom a work free zone. Other recommendations include avoiding caffeine after 12PM, spending time outdoors during daylight hours, and exercising each day.

Dr. Kannan Ramar, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a pulmonologist, critical care specialist and sleep medicine specialist at Mayo Clinic, and professor at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, says, “Pervasive worry is a major factor in sleep disruption.” He advises his patients to turn off the TV and your tablet one or two hours before bedtime. Stop drinking alcohol at least one or two hours before sleep and consider moderating your consumption.

If you have started the search for senior housing, please take a look at MorningStar of Arvada. The Importance of Keeping Blood Sugar Levels Low

July 18, 2021 by Karla A in Assisted Living

An alarming new report from the Centers of Disease and Prevention (CDC) finds 34.2 million people in the U.S. (10.5% of the country’s population) are diabetic. Within that group, “7.3 million, or 21.4%, have not yet received a diagnosis. The CDC also estimates that 34.5% of people over 18 years old, or 88 million, have prediabetes.”

Adding to the problem, researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD found over the last decade fewer people are controlling their blood sugar at healthy levels. They also report the management of cholesterol is down, which is especially troubling as diabetics are at a higher risk of developing heart disease as well as developing kidney disease and nerve, eye and organ problems.

Dr. Elizabeth Selvin, of the Bloomberg School’s Department of Epidemiology and senior author of the study, said: “These are concerning findings. There has been a real decline in glycemic control from a decade ago, and overall, only a small proportion of people with diabetes are simultaneously meeting the key goals of glycemic control, blood pressure control, and control of high cholesterol.”

Experts say some of the problem may stem from the fact that doctors think it is too difficult to help patients maintain healthy blood sugar levels but with some of the newer medications now available this is no longer true. Dr. Selvin explains new drugs carry less risk of hypoglycemia, and the process of managing blood sugar levels “may not be as complicated and daunting as physicians and patients might have come to expect.”

It is important to get regular checkups, maintain a healthy weight, and exercise (both cardio and strength training). You also need to follow your doctor’s or dietician’s advice regarding diet. Diabetics need to eat at the same time each day and to watch portion size.

The beautiful MorningStar of Arvada senior living community believes serving seniors is our calling. We are committed to creating a community catering to the needs of residents and promoting independence through a healthy, engaged lifestyle. MorningStar has 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites and another 29 secure memory care suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
