A Fun Project to Do with an Elderly Parent

October 14, 2022 by Karla A

If an elderly parent is in a senior living community and has limited mobility, you may feel it is difficult to think of things to talk about or to do when you visit.  Scrapbooking is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Also, it can be more than just a means to pass the time and preserve memories for seniors but can be beneficial to them as well.

By organizing an activity such as scrapbooking, it can help to keep everyone engaged as well as inspire your loved one to start sharing stories about the “good old days.”  As you start documenting their life story, it will likely bring back memories they may have forgotten and/or ones the rest of the family knows nothing about.  Along with exercising the brain with recollections of the past, scrapbooking can boost self-esteem, improve one’s dexterity and increase socialization by introducing new topics of conversation.

To get started, visit your local craft store or shop on the Internet for scrapbooking supplies that will help you create a book that is uniquely your parent’s.  Your next step is to help gather and organize the photos and materials in chronological order that will go into the scrapbook.

If the project seems too overwhelming for your parents, have them pick a theme such as family vacations or weddings through the years, or do one that focuses on their childhood and early years.  Before you start to glue things in, take the time to layout the photos and mementos for each page; and most importantly, encourage and enjoy the stories and memories shared by your loved one.

At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, our beautiful community offers a host of amenities, care services and wellness programs as well as activities that include arts and crafts projects.  Residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, and a hospitality and care team who feel called and honored to serve seniors.  Please visit our website for more information and to inquire about pricing and availability.

Senior Living Communities Offer a Healthy, Engaged Lifestyle

October 10, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

The U.S. Census Bureau reports almost 13.8 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Independent and assisted living communities offer older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships.  Buildings that are designed to accommodate the needs of seniors is another advantage of many senior communities. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we provide all the comforts of home with stylish casitas and suites along with graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, bistro bar, theater salon, pool, and fitness centers as well as wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle. Older Adults Often Fall Prey to Financial Scams

October 07, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

Older adults often fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. In 2021, over 92,000 victims over the age of 60 reported losses of $1.7 billion to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Crime Complaint Center. The sad part is that it’s often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills.

Experts explain there are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to fraudulent schemes starting with the fact they tend to be very trusting.  Our elderly population was typically raised to be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud. Lonely seniors can easily be preyed upon as they are willing to stay on the phone and engage in conversation with a stranger.

The national council on Aging (NCOA) updates the public to current scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, look at the information and discuss the various schemes used with them.  One scam frequently used is for a thief to call unsuspecting victims and pretend to be from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Social Security Administration, or Medicare. They have many angles such as saying the individual has unpaid taxes or their Social Security or Medicare benefits are in danger of being cut off.  They then demand payment (in the case of unpaid taxes) or ask for personal identifying information, which is then used to commit fraud. These impersonators often “spoof” the actual phone numbers of the government agency, or call from the same area code for Washington, DC, tricking the victim into believing the call is legitimate.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor.  In addition, never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people.  Also, do not give out personal PIN numbers, or Medicare and other financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure salespersons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes.  Experts say it is most likely a hoax.  Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.” With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting. Managing Changing Weather with Dementia

September 19, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

Is your loved one vocal about being too hot or too cold, even if they’re dressed appropriately?  The human body’s circulation gets worse with age. Retaining heat throughout the body becomes difficult to do. This means certain limbs may feel numb, or cold. Many American seniors experience bad circulation in their hands and feet. For individuals with dementia, this sensation can become even more confusing. Consider these helpful tips to keep your senior comfortable while they’re in memory care.

As we enter the fall months, it will be common that our loved ones will voice their discomfort with the cold, even if they are dressed appropriately for the weather. This can be dangerous for individuals with dementia and poor circulation in the hands or feet. If a senior struggling with dementia or other forms of memory loss tells you they are freezing while wearing a sweater and jacket, refrain from adding another layer. Consider first how covered, or uncovered, their hands and feet are. Offer a pair of warm socks and slippers to your loved one before putting them at risk of overheating unintentionally. Perhaps consider a knitted hat or gloves and see if their reaction improves.

Since seniors already naturally have a harder time regulating their body temperatures, it becomes even more difficult for elders with dementia to feel comfortable in various temperatures. Alternatively, they may be unaware of how to adjust their clothing for changes in the weather. In colder climates, such as in Colorado, memory care residents may be familiar with the need to dress heavier with more layers. However, they may forget that their living arrangements are heated and kept warmer than the outside. This can put seniors with dementia at risk of overheating as well.

MorningStar of Arvada’s memory care facility takes pride in its astounding team members that selflessly strive to keep our residents safe. Every team member, regardless of role, completes three foundational one-day training as part of joining the MorningStar family as well as training in Radiance (our culture and customer service initiative) and Lavender Sky (our dementia care philosophy and approach to programming). Some states in which we operate require care managers to be certified in both CPR and First Aid. Continuing education is conducted regularly and our Med Tech (QMAPs) are additionally trained in medication administration.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Arvada, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself our exceptional offering for independent and assisted living in Arvada, Colorado.

With the heightened productivity of this point-of-care charting and clinical intelligence, we are free to devote more time to resident-centered care and activities. This also ensures our information is organized and up to date.

We determine your loved one’s level of need as part of our onboarding process for our memory care in Arvada CO. Each resident has a varying level of need. Care Levels are determined through a simple point system that takes into account the cost and time of providing each service such as grooming, bathing, ambulation, and medical assistance. The cumulative score determines the level of care, resulting in an individualized service plan that offers the right amount of help needed.

Respite stays are also offered at MorningStar. Respite care is a short-term stay in a MorningStar community. It is recommended for seniors recovering from hospitalization or other health issues. It can also be of benefit to a personal caregiver who needs a well-deserved vacation or a break from the responsibilities of caring for a senior.

Trusted Assisted Living in Oregon

September 16, 2022 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Have you decided for you or a loved one to move into an assisted living facility? The decision is never an easy feat. Picking the right assisted living community that meets your needs and level of care perfectly is equally as daunting. Evaluate your current needs and wants in a senior living or memory care facility. Keep these questions and advice below in mind so that you can be self-assured that you have found the right place to call home.

It is important to consider not only your current care needs but your future ones as well. No one wants to think about memory loss or the other discomforts that come with old age, but these changes are a fact of life. Preparing for what may lie ahead can guarantee that you will be taken care of properly for years to come. Therefore it is best to consider senior living facilities that offer retirement homes, assisted living, and memory care. Communities that offer these assisted  living arrangements under one roof can ensure that you stay comfortable throughout your stay. You don’t have to worry about jumping from home to home when your needs change.

MorningStar provides these three levels of care. Not only that, but MorningStar of Beaverton considers the needs of every resident. Upon meeting, our Wellness Director will assess your current health, and review your medical history to ascertain how we can best meet your needs. At that time, we will also learn your preferences, as well as normal routines, to develop a care plan customized to you. Your plan will also be regularly re-evaluated to coincide with your changing needs as your time with us extends. Staying at one facility ensures that your files do not become lost. You can build a hearty relationship with your community, your caregivers, and your neighbors which is less possible through multiple stays at different facilities.

While MorningStar may be new to Beaverton, our team is highly experienced in serving seniors. We understand how to provide residents with a quality-of-life other assisted living communities simply cannot match. Every team member, regardless of role, completes three foundational one-day training as part of joining the MorningStar family as well as training in Radiance (our culture and customer service initiative) and Lavender Sky (our dementia care philosophy and approach to programming). Consider These Forms of Communication When a Loved One is Struggling with Dementia

September 14, 2022 by Karla A in Memory care

It is challenging to adjust to new modes of communication with someone struggling with Dementia or Alzheimer’s. It feels a lot like learning a whole new language. Alzheimer’s is. A disease progresses differently for each person affected, which makes the degree of changes in how they communicate vary. These changes tend to lead to a lot of stress and frustration for your loved one, and for their caregiver as well. After all, we know you want to provide the best care in the most efficient ways possible. Barriers due to dementia can sometimes make that hard to do. MorningStar of Arvada’s Assisted Living and Memory Care offers this advice to help better communicate with your loved one struggling with memory loss.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s are difficult diseases to navigate. Getting your loved one to complete or agree to simple everyday tasks may become frustrating and overwhelming for both of you. When it comes to taking care of themselves, a senior struggling with dementia may forget when they have last bathed, or eaten, or the reasons why they need to do these things in general. If you are trying to get them to clean themselves up or to eat a meal, but they refuse to do so, try approaching the situation differently.

Telling your loved one you don’t know how to clean yourself and asking them to demonstrate to you how to use a washrag with soap is an easy alternative to forcing them into a shower or bath or having an unnecessary argument. In this way, your loved one believes they are being helpful by showcasing something to you while also cleaning their body and maintaining good personal hygiene.

A senior with dementia may often tell you they are full when they haven’t eaten for hours. Their body may not be sending out normal hunger cues or they may be unable to decipher their feeling of hunger as needing to eat. Breaking a large meal into smaller parts will be less overwhelming for someone struggling with Alzheimer’s. For example, offering one slice of toast and then thirty minutes later offering some fruit. Alternatively, asking your loved one to describe the taste of something as a method to make them eat has been proven to get seniors to eat. By describing the flavor, someone with dementia feels as though they are of need to you and want to help you answer a question.

Tips for a Healthier Lifestyle this Fall

September 09, 2022 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Now that fall is around the corner, most of us can look forward to more moderate temperatures, making it easier to enjoy the outdoors. Medical experts say spending time outside has a beneficial impact on our mental health as well as boost our immune system; and a nice sunny fall day can increase our vitamin D. In addition, engaging in many types of exercise is not only more enjoyable but safer in temperate weather.

Another healthy habit to incorporate into our fall routine is getting a flu shot. While we all know the dangers of COVID-19, influenza can also be deadly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises “The single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications is to get vaccinated each year, but good health habits like avoiding people who are sick, covering your cough and washing your hands often can help stop the spread of germs and prevent respiratory illnesses like flu.”

Fall is also time for healthy, immune boosting vegetables and fruits. Pumpkins are a good example of a tasty, nutritional vegetable. They are high in beta carotene, which is converted into vitamin A, as well as vitamins C, E, potassium and fiber. The versatile pumpkin can be used in everything from chili to soups, pastas, breads, drinks and yummy desserts. Moreover, don’t forget to save the seeds as they are high in plant-based protein, fiber and magnesium.

For many, one of their favorite things about fall is the start of football season and enjoying the games with family and friends. Dieticians recommend considering healthier alternatives to traditional snacks on game day such as fresh vegetables and dip, homemade trail mix, hummus with veggies and fresh fruit. Not only are they more heart healthy but may help take off a few inches from your waistline.

At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, our primary goal is to provide seniors with carefree retirement years.  Our beautiful community offers residents a safe and comfortable home to age in place while taking advantage of resort-style amenities and a broad range of meaningful activities. Residents also enjoy healthy, nutritious meals inspired by our own Executive Chef and served in our full-service dining room. September 07, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

A highly respected senior housing company, MorningStar Senior Living has communities throughout the Western U.S. that are designed to be true homes for their residents.  MorningStar at Golden Ridge is one of four MorningStar communities in the Phoenix area.

MorningStar was started in 2003 based on unique mission statements, principles and philosophy.  As Ken Jaeger, founder/CEO of MorningStar explains, his intention was to create senior living that was “defined by the human touch. I wanted to re-create my grandmother’s house, a place where one can go and feel a sense of family.”

Out of this vision, came three mission statements that still guide the way we deliver service to our residents:  Honor God in our business practices and relationships; Value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals; and Invest generously in our team’s ability to serve well.  The name “MorningStar” was inspired by Mr. Jaeger’s contemplation of the bible and his commitment to relieve poverty around the world.

However, while founded on a Judeo-Christian tradition; please know that we welcome and honor all faiths and worldviews in our communities, and are committed to meeting not only residents’ social, emotional, and physical needs but their spiritual ones.  In our pursuit of creating a loving home, honoring spiritual preferences is part of caring for the whole person.

In addition, we recognize our mission is advanced by hiring team members who hold true to our core values of love, respect, honesty, fairness, goodness, and kindness.  They are the type of individuals who feel privileged to serve seniors and help us create the kind of culture we envision building – a Family for Life.

Our all-inclusive community in Peoria offers a dining service under the direction of an Executive Chef, a range of floor plans to meet our residents’ varying needs, and onsite amenities and care services to provide carefree retirement years. If you are looking for exceptional independent living, assisted living or memory care, we encourage you to contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar Senior Living takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Contact us to learn more about the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care in Peoria, AZ.

Steps to Take to Maintain and Enhance Memory Function

September 05, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

In an article in the US News & World Report, experts say forgetfulness is not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things we can do to help maintain and enhance our memory function and overall brain health.  Furthermore, they also benefit whole body health.

One of the first things they recommend is to never stop making “physical activity a priority as it optimizes blood flow to the entire body, including the brain.  An adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the brain helps to keep our memories sharp.”  Researchers explain that the type of exercise is also important and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio exercise such as running, power walking, biking, or swimming.  However, before beginning any new exercise regime, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

In addition, continuing to learn new things can improve our memory as studies have found a correlation between challenging our brain and maintaining brain health.  This could include activities such as playing an instrument, starting a new hobby, learning a language, or just broadening your reading habits.

Other advice that not only enhances cognitive thinking, but overall health includes getting enough sleep each night.  Research has shown that “powering down on a nightly basis allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia types.”

What sets MorningStar at Golden Ridge apart from other senior living communities in Peoria, AZ?  We strive to provide a true “home” for residents and have a team committed to serving seniors who treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Our care services, wellness programs and activities are designed to meet the physical, mental, spiritual and social needs of our residents. Seniors with Dementia Can Enjoy the Water this Summer

August 26, 2022 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Spending time in the pool can serve as physical therapy for seniors experiencing Alzheimer’s or other forms of memory loss. By strengthening the whole body with low impact and gentle movements, water aerobics is a fun way for seniors to be social and get some physical exercise. As specialists in memory care, MorningStar’s Memory Care of Arvada, Co is aware of the benefits of aquatic therapy, especially for seniors living with neurological conditions like Alzheimer’s.

Water therapy encourages independence in seniors that live in memory care facilities. Because of the unique properties of water, bodies can perform movements more easily than on the ground. Water therapy helps seniors experience relief from stress on joints and bones. Improved joint function, motor coordination, balance, and an increased range of motion are other major benefits for the body when participating in water aerobics.

Performing rhythmic body movements and dance steps in water is what water aerobics is all about. These exercises are performed in waist, or chest, deep water, making it ideal for people with arthritis, neck and back problems, and obesity.

While water therapy is beneficial for some individuals experiencing memory loss, these seniors should never enter a pool unsupervised. In fact, instructors should be present in the water with dementia care individuals that have been cleared to participate in pool activities. A lifeguard should also be within reach for extra safety measures. MorningStar’s Memory Care and Senior Living in Arvada is happy to have a swimming pool within our own community. If swimming doesn’t pique your interest, you may enjoy a soak in our hot tub or a rejuvenating spa bath.

Regardless of the barrier within your loved ones' memory loss, we continue to practice empathetic techniques with our residents in memory care. By incorporating holistic methods through properly trained personnel, our individualized care plans enhance the health and happiness of our memory care seniors.

These Stretches are Beneficial Exercises for Seniors with Dementia

August 24, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

As specialists in memory care, MorningStar’s Memory Care of Arvada, Co is aware of the anxiety and grief families experience regarding an Alzheimer’s diagnosis or other memory loss diseases. Learning how to navigate this new reality can be especially daunting. You might ask yourself, “how will my parents continue to live a rewarding life?” Learning new skills and maintaining old ones can become difficult for someone struggling with memory loss. If your loved one, spouse, or parent is dealing with dementia, these low-risk exercise techniques may be beneficial in keeping their mind and body active.

Start simple when helping your loved one maintain their physical activity. Gentle stretches and regular walks are an easy way to ensure your loved one is moving their body. The hamstring stretch, or a toe touch, is one exercise that can be beneficial if your loved one spends most of their time sitting in one place. If they are immobilized, encouraging them to stretch their feet out in front and reach forward is another way to loosen the muscles. Joining in with your loved one is greatly encouraging.

Going on regular walks helps to stretch muscles as well. Walking is a great way to increase the heart rate and remain mobile while also getting some fresh air. MorningStar’s Memory Care of Arvada, Co has three secure gardens/courtyards specifically designed for our memory care residents to stroll through and enjoy nature.

Regardless of the barrier within your loved ones' memory loss, we continue empathetic techniques with our residents in memory care. By incorporating holistic methods through properly trained personnel, our individualized care plans enhance the health and happiness of our memory care seniors.

Learn how Environmental Wellness can Impact Your Health

August 24, 2022 by Karla A in Memory care

Our environment has a huge impact on our stress levels and overall well being. Not only should our homes feel comfortable and offer a good flow of positive energy, but we should receive the same pleasantry from the world outside our doors. When searching for senior living or memory care, it’s common for retirement facilities to boast about their indoor activities and amenities but may fall short when it comes to keeping up an enriching outdoor environment. Environmental wellness is desirable for seniors, especially those that may have lost mobility in recent years and cannot travel far distances. Alternatively, taking care of our physical environments by reducing waste, tending to gardens, and preserving the natural beauty around us promotes a sense of purpose and duty.

Environmental wellness is a term that suggests occupying pleasant, stimulating environments that support wellbeing and encourages good overall health. Respecting your surroundings and the planet for which we live contributes to a healthier mindset. Interacting with nature and enjoying its beauty lowers depression and anxiety. When we are in a location filled with plants, natural scenery, fresh air, and reduced noise pollution, our bodies reward us. Better cardiovascular health, more maintained sleep patterns, and improved mood are all positive symptoms of a healthy outdoors.

A well-maintained community that fills its grounds with lush plants and trees creates lively social environments for friends to gather. Socializing on walks, sitting on a patio, or bird watching are some activities that enrich our physical and mental wellbeing. MorningStar of Beaverton enjoys a picturesque setting overlooking the natural wetlands. Senior living residents take pride in maintaining the community garden. On chilly nights, the outdoor courtyard with barbecue and fire pit hosts immaculate gatherings to help residents wind down for the evening, all while enjoying the fresh air of Oregon.

Senior residents in MorningStar's Memory Care enjoy the outdoors safely and easily. The spatial design of the community creates a safe and healthy environment by reducing the risk of falls and accidents. Their enclosed courtyard is designed for memory care residents. Strolling outdoor paths allow seniors to easily navigate the outdoors within our grounds with the help of 24-hour care staff. This access to fresh air and sunlight greatly improves the lives of individuals with memory loss or dementia.

Maintaining Proper Dental Health in Dementia Patients

August 22, 2022 by Karla A in Memory care

An Alzheimer’s diagnosis often impacts every area of an individual’s life. As the disease progresses, the individual with dementia will begin to lose more motor skills and show more signs of memory loss. One of the first signs of dementia is a senior forgetting personal hygiene techniques and maintaining their daily upkeep. If you notice your elderly parent or loved one struggling to care for themselves, it may be time to incorporate a more hands on approach. Proper dental hygiene is necessary for seniors in memory care. Proper oral care is necessary to prevent issues with eating regularly, digestive problems, and dental infections.

Once dementia is diagnosed in your loved one, building a regular dental plan with their dentist will help prevent cavities and other oral issues down the line. You may have to re-teach dental hygiene to your loved one. Proving easy instruction to teeth brushing keeps seniors in memory care focused and calm. Perhaps showing them how to brush can also be beneficial. Try not to be forceful in this technique as it may make your loved one frustrated and scared.

For seniors in memory care that wear dentures, make sure the dentures are being properly cleaned. rinse them with plain water after meals and brush them daily to remove food particles and to limit bacterial growth. Each night, remove them and soak in their designated cleanser. Using a soft thistle toothbrush, clean the gums, tongue, and other soft mouth tissues. Remind your loved one that you’re there to help and keep them safe.

As specialists in memory care, MorningStar’s Memory Care of Arvada, Co is aware of the anxiety and concern that is associated with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases. Regardless of the barrier within your loved ones' memory loss, we continue empathetic techniques with our residents in memory care. By incorporating holistic methods through properly trained personnel, our individualized care plans enhance the health and happiness of our memory care seniors.
