Study Links Gum Bacteria With Alzheimer's Disease

January 31, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

Researchers at Tuft University reported a link between gum disease, also known as periodontitis and periodontal disease, to an increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Periodontitis is a bacterial infection within the soft tissue of the mouth, and “about 47.2% of U.S. adults over 30 and 70% over 65 have gum disease,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The study, which was done with mice, discovered the correlation, but researchers hope the findings can be used to someday help reduce cases of Alzheimer’s disease. The authors cite Fusobacterium nucleatum (F. nucleatum), a bacterium that causes gum disease and is already linked to kidney disease, diabetes and coronary issues to be the problem.

The lead author, Dr. Jake Jinkun Chen, professor of periodontology and director of the Division of Oral Biology at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine explains the purpose of the study is to identify and characterize the association of induced periodontal disease with Alzheimer’s disease. He says as F. nucleatum generates “inflammation both locally and systemically, it affects the Alzheimer’s disease phenotype, as Alzheimer’s itself is an inflammatory disease.” Additionally, since the bacteria migrate and penetrate the brain, it can worsen the symptoms and signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers plan further studies in humans and say although there is not a proven link yet; good oral health benefits our overall health. They also say to decrease our risk for Alzheimer’s, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.

As Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease progresses, a loved one may need more care than they can get living at home. The Reflections Neighborhood at MorningStar at Golden Ridge

January 22, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

In addition to independent living and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge has 35 suites in the Reflections Neighborhood devoted to caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

As dementia care specialists, we understand how devastating it is when a loved one receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another memory loss disease, and we want you to know we are here to help.  We consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.

The Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to allow our most tender residents the freedom to explore their surroundings safely and easily.  Within the haven of our “Neighborhood,” we have created an environment that encourages and supports residents’ independence whenever possible.   We accept residents in the earliest stage of the disease right through to those in more advanced phases that require the highest level of care.

We are staffed by experienced and compassionate caregivers who truly understand the disease.  MorningStar leverages the power of dance, music, art, exercise, animals and aromatherapy to heal and comfort, and provides meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage our residents.  Also, as many adverse behaviors are often side effects from antipsychotic drugs, our goal is to have as few as possible of our residents on such drugs.

We recognize that the essence of the individual remains despite the extent of memory loss, and that our job is to find ways to connect with and nurture it.  MorningStar’s philosophy and approach to this kind of supported living is encompassed under the breadth of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Thus, each day we strive to thoughtfully “enter, embrace and explore” the world of dementia.  Please visit our website to learn more about MorningStar Senior Living, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

The Risk of Dehydration Increases With Age

January 17, 2025 by Karla A in Senior Living

Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid than it takes in. It can happen when we experience an excessive loss of fluids from things like sweating, vomiting and/or diarrhea; or simply not drinking enough. Dehydration can sneak up on people and is a common problem especially in the heat of summer.

Older adults are even more at risk of dehydration as their thirst sensation decreases with age. This means seniors may not feel thirsty when they really need fluids. Other reasons can include underlying chronic illnesses of the heart, lung or kidneys as well as certain medications such as diuretics.

Maintaining fluids in our bodies is essential to good health. Dr. Marc Taub, an emergency physician and medical director of emergency services at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, states, “Water helps move nutrients and oxygen throughout our system, ensuring cells get the elements they need to function.”

Therefore it is important to recognize the early signs of dehydration and to address it.  The US News & World Report states these include:

  • Feeling thirsty.

  • Dry mouth.

  • Lightheaded.

  • Fatigue.

  • Darker-colored urine.

  • Odorous urine.

Mild cases of dehydration are easy to fix. Just drink a couple of glasses of water or try an electrolyte-enriched beverage like sports drinks or coconut water. If you are outside, get out of the sun and seek a cool location.

Doctors say since older adults are more at risk, they should take extra precautions to make sure they don’t get into a difficult situation, particularly those with chronic medical conditions or on multiple medications. This would include staying indoors on hot days and drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day. If you feel you are drinking enough fluids but still feel thirsty or experiencing symptoms associated with dehydration, let your healthcare provider know.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to meet the needs of residents in senior living with a range of luxury amenities, senior care, hospitality services, wellness programs, and activities. Our well-designed Casitas and suites come in a range of floor plans including studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom.  Amenities include a bistro/bar, fitness centers, salon, saline swimming pool, theatre/chapel, life enrichment rooms and more. If you are considering senior living in Peoria AZ, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Dealing with Fatigue

December 23, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

You may be one of the millions of Americans who complain about feeling a sense of fatigue that makes it difficult to get on with life. The Harvard Medical school explains there is a distinction between just feeling tired and fatigue, which “includes components that are physical (weariness or weakness), mental (lack of concentration and sharpness), and emotional (lack of motivation or boredom).”

Some of the causes of fatigue may be easier to identify such as lingering symptoms from an illness like Covid or the flu, or side effects from medical treatments like chemo-therapy. Even some medications are known to cause tiredness. When fatigue is ongoing and interfering with day-to-day activities, doctors say you should consult with your healthcare provider.

Your doctor can look for things like anemia as it can be a reason for a decline in energy. It occurs when a person’s blood has too few red blood cells, or cells without enough hemoglobin that is used to transport oxygen throughout the bloodstream. Heart disease is another cause of fatigue as it can make the heart pump less efficiently and result in fluid build-up in lungs. This can lead to a reduction in the amount of oxygen able to circulate into the lungs and heart.

Other causes of fatigue include depression and insomnia that often can go hand in hand. However antidepressants, which are often prescribed to treat depression as well as certain blood pressure meds and antihistamines, can increase tiredness.

Experts say while fatigue caused by medical or mental health needs to be attended to by your physician; there are self-help things you can do to manage or treat fatigue every day. The first is to get in the habit of exercising. Next watch what you eat and try to reduce your consumption of fried and over-processed foods. Following a low glycemic diet may help boost energy. Other tips include staying hydrated, reducing alcohol and watching how much coffee you drink each day.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we proudly provide senior living older adults can count on. Our community offers a choice of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Please contact us today and let us show you around our beautiful community.

Thinking about Senior Living?

December 20, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

As today’s seniors are living longer than ever, it makes sense to consider whether to age in place in their own home or take advantage of the benefits offered by senior living communities. While many older adults say they wish to stay at home, the reality is in some situations; it may be impractical and expensive and not as safe given their health issues. To make an informed decision regarding one’s choices, it is important to know the real cost of living at home, receiving in-home care or residing in a senior community.

If you are currently living in your own place and think senior living communities are way more expensive, consider the following. Living in a home or apartment means a monthly mortgage or rent payment and homeowners or rental insurance. Monthly expenses include utility bills for electricity, gas, trash and water as well as phone and internet services.

Assuming you no longer want to or can maintain the outside of your home, you will need lawn care and perhaps snow removable services not to mention maintenance like painting or replacing a roof. Driving and maintaining a car is not cheap and in many cases is necessary if you live on your own. Other expenses might include things like an emergency call system, fitness club membership and housekeeping services, which all start adding up.

If a senior needs help with the ADLs (activities of daily living) and wants to obtain in-home care services, you need to factor in those cost, and they are not cheap. So in addition to all of the associated costs of living in and maintaining a home, you also have the high cost of in-home care.

Senior living communities may sound very expensive until you factor in all of the benefits you get. Many offer a choice of independent living or assisted living with spacious private apartments, onsite amenities such as fitness centers and salons, dining services, social activities and an appropriate level of care for residents. Many include scheduled transportation, organized trips to local activities and are pet friendly.

The MorningStar of Arvada senior living community is designed around the various needs of older adults and provides senior-friendly activities and companionship with like-minded people of a similar age. Outside chores as well as the cleaning and cooking are taken care of by us allowing you to focus on the things you love to do most in life. Along with smartly-designed floorplans, residents enjoy inviting common areas perfect for relaxation and spending time with friends. We also are honored to provide trusted memory care Arvada, CO families can count on.

Are You Considering Senior Living?

December 02, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

There comes a time in the lives of many senior citizens when they feel the need for a more carefree, comfortable retirement without all the responsibilities that come with home ownership. If you are looking for senior living, your next question may be what community is right for me.

As some of your decisions will be based on personal needs, it is important to know that senior living communities offer a range of options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Independent living is designed for active seniors who love the idea of predictable budgeting, built-in companionship and restaurant-style dining as well as wellness programs and activities. Moreover, as a resident, if your health needs change and you require daily care, you are already familiar with all that senior living offers.

Assisted living is tailored to those seniors who wish to receive the daily senior care services they need to maintain their independence. They too flourish with vibrant programs and a supportive social community that allows them to comfortably and safely age in place.

For families with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, there is often a time when the person’s needs outpace the care family members can provide at home. If this is your family, you will want a community that offers a distinct memory care unit and a team of experienced caregivers.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we proudly offer older adults independent living, assisted living and memory care that seniors and their families have come to trust. To get to know us better we encourage potential residents and their families to schedule a tour to experience firsthand our ambience and friendly environment. Why Arm Strength is Important for Seniors

November 29, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

We know balance exercises protect older adults’ safety and stability by preventing falls as well as helping maintain independence. The Harvard Medical School explains keeping arm strength should also be a goal for seniors.

The fact is as early as our mid-thirties, arm strength and overall muscles start to decline and continue to do so around one percent each year thereafter. Once we reach our sixties, experts say arm strength is declining by as much as 3 percent each year, and not only reduces our range of motion but increases our risk for injuries.

Functional strength improves quality of life, and having a strong upper body is important. Maintaining and/or building up arm strength benefits our bones and balance as well as prevents falls. Experts point to two important muscles that control our arm movements: biceps, the muscles located on the upper arm; and triceps, the muscles at the back of the upper arm. Both sets of muscles help us lift, carry and push.

Improving arm strength is easy to do at home and doesn’t require fancy gym equipment. Check with the Harvard Medical School or other sources on the Internet to find examples of exercises targeted toward seniors. To get started, all you need are a pair of two or five pound weights depending on your size and/or condition. As you gain strength, you can move up to heavier weights. However before beginning any new exercise, please check with your healthcare provider.

At the MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community, we believe in providing seniors an all-encompassing environment for residents’ well-being and safely to comfortably age in place. Our community offers a full fitness room, spa room, massage room and a range of fun programming to enhance fitness.

For independent living and assisted living, we offer 66 well-designed suites in a variety of floorplans including studios and one- and two-bedrooms. Our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases 38 all-inclusive memory care suites. Diet May Play a Role in a Future Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis

December 04, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

While there is lots of data on how lifestyle habits impact our health, a new study reinforces a link between ultra-processed foods and the increase in a person’s risk for type 2 diabetes. The study from the University College London analyzed the intake of ultra-processed foods and health outcomes in more than 310,000 Europeans over a period of ten years.

This deserves attention as our country’s research shows “about 60% of daily caloric intake for Americans comes from consuming ultra-processed foods.” Moreover according to the CDC, the number of Americans with diabetes or prediabetes continues to rise. They state 38.7 million people or 11.6 percent of the population has diabetes, and another 97.6 million people aged 18 years or older (38 percent of the adult U.S. population) has prediabetes.

Researchers say the problem with ultra-processed food is they include additives and/or industrial processed and novel types of fats, proteins  and carbs a home cook wouldn’t use. Samuel Dicken, BA Hons (Cantab.), MSc, clinical scientist and doctoral researcher at the Centre for Obesity Research in the Division of Medicine at University College London, and lead author of the study explained to Medical News Today, “Ultra-processed foods are everywhere, they’re highly accessible, cheap, convenient, and heavily marketed.” He says just take a look at grocery shelves filled with ultra-processed foods like breakfast cereals, snacks, plant-based alternatives and sugary drinks.

Despite the study showing the more ultra-processed food a person consumed, the higher the risk for developing type 2 diabetes; the study also had good news. It reported participants who altered their diet by replacing 10 percent of ultra-processed foods with 10 percent of minimally processed foods reduced their diabetes risk by 8%.

Experts say to improve our diet; we should eat more fruits and vegetables, limit drive-through meals and cook healthy meals at home. Also when grocery shopping, read labels; the longer the list, the more likely it is ultra-processed regardless of claims of low fat or high fiber.

At the MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community, we pride ourselves on offering residents a delicious dining service based on lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and other healthy ingredients. Our lovely community offers area seniors the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care. Please contact us to set up an in-person tour.

Start Your Day With a Healthy Breakfast

November 15, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Growing up, most of our mothers told us it wasn’t healthy to skip breakfast. While we listened, many of us still went off to school without eating anything. Based on current research, it turns out our mother’s advice was right again, and eating breakfast is good for us for several reasons.

Registered Dietician Erin Palinski-Wade explains when we eat a healthy breakfast upon rising in the morning; it helps regulate our appetite for the rest of the day. If we break our nightly fast with a good meal, we are less likely to indulge in sugary or fat-laden food later in the morning. A healthy breakfast also helps to prevent blood sugar highs and lows and Palinski-Wade says this is important for diabetics as well as the rest of us.

While many breakfast foods such as cereal, baked goods, and granola bars are high in sugar and refined grains, experts say we should refuel our body each morning with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. Protein makes us feel fuller and keeps us from later snacking on unhealthy foods. Eggs, yogurt, sausage, and peanut butter spread on whole wheat toast are good sources of protein. Fiber helps our digestive system work well and is found in oatmeal and whole grain cereals. Many meals can be partly prepared the night before to make your morning routine easier.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, senior living we provide a wide range of services and amenities including beautifully prepared, nutritious meals. Created by our Executive Chef and largely prepared from scratch, meals are served restaurant-style in our attractive dining room.  Menus include low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low-fat options for residents to self-manage. Residents also enjoy a bistro bar, fitness centers, salon, theatre/chapel, library, wellness programs and activities. Coping With the Loss of a Loved One

November 06, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Death is part of life and if we are fortunate to live a long one, most likely we will have to deal with the loss of a beloved spouse, life partner, child, sibling or friend. As loved ones give our lives purpose, coping with their loss and finding new purpose is difficult as many seniors do not have the opportunities to socialize or get out as they once did.

Grief counselors suggest some things a person’s family and friends can do to help them get through the worst of the grief. If it was your parents who died, be sure to let your surviving parents know how much you miss dad or mom, and share memories you have of the good times. Ask your parents if they have more difficult times during the day dealing with the loss as you could come over or give them a call. Also, be sure to not shy away from saying the deceased person’s name.

Offer to do things with them you know they once did with their spouse such as grocery shopping. If dad did the yard work, either offer to do it or help mom hire a company to take care of it. Help your parents find outlets for socializing, and encourage them to pick up an old hobby or find a new one, or take a class.

Being part of a senior living community such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge can be very supportive and give the person a sense of belonging. Other residents most likely have had similar experiences and have a special understanding of what the person is going through.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to provide seniors everything they want and need in a retirement home. Understanding Medicare Coverage

November 01, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

If you recently had a medical procedure or were hospitalized, you may be confused about a recent bill and are wondering what Medicare will cover, what your gap insurance will cover, and what you will be responsible for. It may help to have a better understanding of the four main parts of Medicare.

Part A helps pay for inpatient stays in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, some home care and end-of-life hospice care that accept Medicare. Hospital services covered include a semi-private room and meals, general nursing, drugs and supplies, inpatient rehabilitation, and some blood transfusions. Skilled nursing services include care for things like recovering from hip replacement surgery or stroke. Part A charges a deductible for hospital stays (the fee for 2024 is $1,632) but your Medigap insurance may cover that expense as well as other deductibles. Hospital stays for up to 60 days and virtually most services are covered by Medicare; but the one exception is not in a private room.

Part B covers doctors and outpatient services, and together with part A make up what is considered “Original Medicare.” Part B pays for diagnostic screenings, lab tests, preventive services, some medical equipment and transportation. It covers doctor visits and other outpatient services. There is a monthly premium with Part B, and in 2024 it is $174.70. For those making over $103,000 annually it may be higher.

Part C is what Medicare Advantage comes under, and is privately held insurance rather than Medicare, which is run by the federal government. If you choose Medicare Advantage, you will still need to sign up for Medicare part A and B and pay the premium for part B. Medicare Advantage plans set their own deductibles and you typically need to stay in a Network and use your plan’s approved providers or pay higher out of pocket costs.

Part D is again from a private insurer and pays for some of your prescription drugs. Generally there is a co-pay for each prescription, and you may have a premium, and a yearly deductible. Check with Medicare regarding rules for higher yearly drug costs and your responsibility.

Remember Medicare offers an open enrollment period each year to allow recipients to make changes to their plan. The period starts on October 15 and ends December 7. Any changes you make during this time will go into effect the following year.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our contemporary 55+ community offers luxury independent living and assisted living a variety of configurations and floorplans. Tips to Reduce Stress

October 18, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Researchers say stress can be harmful to our brains and bodies. Whether it is short-term stress from a work deadline or long-term stress from worrying about a loved one who is very ill, it triggers a release of adrenaline and cortisol hormones. Adrenaline, also known as epinephrine, is released during the body’s “fight or flight” response, and increases our heart rate, blood pressure, and energy levels. The effects can last up to an hour.

Cortisol increases blood sugar levels, which provides the body with fast energy but over time elevated levels can raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as increase the risk of heart disease and weight gain. Over time, it can also damage the part of the brain affecting thinking, memory and learning. These adverse reactions show why the body is not easily able to handle high levels of stress day after day.

While we all feel stress at one time or another, some of us get overwhelmed with it. It can prevent us from doing the things we want and keep us from moving forward. The good news is health experts have some useful tips we can all practice to help mitigate unwelcome stress.

One easy and enjoyable habit is to take a walk in a green space. Studies show being around nature helps relieve tension, decreases frustration and offers a sense of calm. Getting outside and getting exercise is also good for relieving tension.

Laughing is another tip to relieve stress. Watch a show or a video clip that gives you a good belly laugh. Giving or getting a heartfelt hug has also been shown to reduce a person’s heart rate and trigger the release of oxytocin, the “feel good” hormone. Studies show socializing or volunteering strengthens immunity and lowers inflammation.

Other stress reducing activities include practicing breathing techniques as well as the simple act of petting a cat or dog. A square of dark chocolate not only contains healthy flavonols but opens blood vessels, reduces blood pressure and releases feel-good endorphins. Finally, don’t forget the importance of a good night’s sleep.

MorningStar at Beaverton is a vibrant senior living community offering independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our community has 66 well-designed suites in a choice of floorplans and configurations (some as large as 974 square feet) and excels in providing comfort, services, amenities and location for a carefree lifestyle. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases, we offer 38 memory care suites. Be sure to ask about late summer savings up to $8000! Call for details!

Protect Your Medicare Number to Prevent Fraud

October 09, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

The National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association estimates last year’s annual Medicare insurance fraud was around $100 billion, and most likely much higher. While one in five beneficiaries say they have encountered potential Medicare fraud, there are precautions you can take to reduce or eliminate fraudulent claims starting with protecting your Medicare and Social Security cards and numbers like you do your credit cards.

Experts say don’t respond to a call, text or email asking you to provide your Medicare Number. They caution you to only show your Medicare card or give out your number to your doctor or people you know who should have it. To determine if you are a victim of fraud, examine your Medicare Summary Notices (MSNs) or claims statements carefully for any discrepancies or additions of services or charges you did not receive. Another common scam is to try to get Medicare beneficiaries to sign up for drug plans that are not approved by Medicare.

If your Medicare card is stolen or you suspect fraud, report it as soon as possible to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). It is important to know Medicare will never call to sell you anything or visit you at home. They will only call or contact you in limited situations to ask for personal information. One such person may be the agent who helped you sign up for a particular Medicare program or drug plan. You also may be contacted by Medicare if you left your number to report fraud or inconsistencies with your MSNs.

Lifestyle Habits can Help Mitigate Your Risk for Several Types of Arthritis

September 25, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Many people assume arthritis comes with aging, but experts say while joint pain is common in older adults, arthritis is not a normal part of aging. The CDC explains arthritis is a group of more than 100 conditions causing inflammation and swelling in the joints or nearby tissues with symptoms such as pain and stiffness. Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and mostly occurs in older adults (about 70% are 55 years and older). Other common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, and fibromyalgia.

While there is not a cure for arthritis, there are treatments, medications and therapies. In addition, studies find healthy lifestyle habits can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout as well as lessen your risk for even getting it. For example, the CDC reports 40% of people with arthritis can decrease pain and improve function by being physically active.

Osteoarthritis is the breakdown of the cartilage of the joints causing bones to rub against one another resulting in pain and difficulty moving the joint but experts say millions of cases could be prevented by avoiding excessive weight gain. Exercising regularly and doing resistance training is another way to avoid injury to the joints.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic condition causing inflammation and swelling in joints. It can misshape, misalign and damage joints; and if it is in one knee or hand, it is typically in the other hand or knee. Recommendations to reduce your risk for RA include avoiding tobacco. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, is linked to several health conditions including RA; and prevention includes improving oral health with good oral hygiene and dental visits.

Gout is another common form of arthritis and occurs when crystals of uric acid are deposited in one or more joints. People with gout experience pain, swelling and redness in the affected joints. Experts say eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol, and staying well hydrated are good steps to reduce your risk. If you are overweight, lose weight and if possible avoid diuretics (discuss all medication changes with your doctor). Studies show regardless of what type of arthritis you have, early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in your future joint health.

The MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community offers residents a comfortable and healthy lifestyle in which to safely age in place. While we provide the care assisted living residents need to maintain their independence, we welcome seniors who may not need any assistance now, but love the idea of maintenance-free living, predictable budgeting and luxury amenities. How Common Are Drug Recalls in the US?

September 16, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

We all applaud the numerous life-saving medications that help many people enjoy a higher quality of life than they may have experienced without these wonder drugs. In the US, the FDA is in charge of approving the medications that come to market in our country and ensuring they are safe and effective.

While each new prescription drug is carefully looked at by the experts at the FDA before it is granted approval, over the last ten years statistics show there were more than 14,000 drugs recalled. This adds up to an average of almost four recalls a day.

Experts say although the numbers sound alarming, in most cases, the FDA is aware of any side effects and risks the drug has before it is made available to the public. According to an article from the Harvard Medical School, there are several explanations as to why things are missed after approval, and a drug is deemed unsafe and recalled.

The most likely reason is drug clinical trials are typically done with at most a couple of thousand people. After a drug is widely used by tens of thousands, rare reactions may turn up. Secondly, clinical trial participates are generally healthy in order to produce better trial results. Once the general public is using the drug, it may not work like it did during trials. Problems can also occur because people are using other medications as well.

Other complications resulting in a drug being recalled include poor manufacturing processes including bacterial contamination or problems with mislabeling and storage. In some cases, incidences of recalls are due to manufacturers adding additional ingredients that were never in the original medication.

Thankfully most recalls are not life-threatening or dangerous to the user. Only 6 percent of recalls are Class I. This is where the drug is deemed dangerous and poses a serious health risk. The majority of recalls fall into the Class II category where a drug may present a less serious health risk or a temporary one. Many times it is a matter of a drug being improperly stored such as a too hot location.

To safeguard yourself, you can sign up for texts or emails from the FDA regarding safety alerts and recalls on drugs. Additionally, pharmacists advise patients to carefully examine their new prescription for the correct color and broken or crumbling pills. Contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns regarding your medications.

Be Prepared for Mom or Dad’s Sudden Hospital Visit

September 09, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

While many hospital stays are planned, older adults are more likely to require an unexpected trip to the hospital. When you have the luxury of time, it is easy to get prepared with the necessary information a parent needs when admitted to the hospital. It can be a different story if the trip is sudden.

Medical experts say to ensure a loved one gets the proper care, it is important to see to it that the hospital has a complete medical history.  Notes and documents can be completed and gathered now then updated as health changes occur. For starters, the hospital will want a “next of kin” contact for the patient so decide beforehand who that will be.

Now go through the list of medications your parents take and make sure they are all together in one location. In the event of a medical emergency, you will be able to bring all their medications with you to ensure the hospital knows the most up-to-date medications and dosages.

Another thing to gather information on regards your parents’ pre-existing conditions and any recent surgeries or procedures they may have had. Provide the name of their primary care provider; and be sure to let the hospital personnel know if your parent has dementia or any physical limitations.

If the hospital doesn’t already have a copy of your loved one’s advanced directive, also known as a living will, bring one with you. An advanced directive is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken in end-of-life situations when they cannot speak for themselves. Mom or dad may also have a Do-Not-Resuscitate Order, which is another kind of advance directive. It covers not receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if the person’s heart stops or if they stop breathing.

Other information to give to the hospital regards allergies and dietary restrictions. Additionally, make sure your loved one has their cell phone with them as many hospital rooms do not have phones.

Preparing for a Move to Senior Living Eases the Transition

August 19, 2024 by Karla A in Senior Living

Moving can be exhausting and many of us have mixed feelings about the change as we look to a new adventure, while sad to leave our old life behind. Now imagine what your parents may be feeling as they leave a familiar home for an assisted living community. The change can be even more difficult if they are going into memory care.

Experts say there are things family members can do to ease the transition and make it a more positive experience. First, involve your loved one into the decision-making process as much as possible. Discuss the various benefits of each community as regards to suites, amenities, food service and the helpfulness of the staff and administrators. Also read online reviews from other families and residents; and take advantage of in-person tours.

Once the decision is made on a particular community, now help mom or dad decide on what to bring to their new space, keeping in mind it is probably smaller than their current home. Consider an item based on its practicality, footprint, and your loved one’s feelings toward it. Be sure to include personal mementos such as family pictures and a few of their most cherished treasures he/she has collected through the years. Other furniture and items can be given to family members, sold or donated to charity.

Experts advise adult children to play an active role in helping a loved one settle into their new home and to remember it is an emotional adjustment. In-person visits help as do phone calls to let them know you are still thinking of them.

At the MorningStar of Beaverton senior living community, we are experienced in helping residents make a smooth transition by working alongside our residents and their families to listen to concerns and help solve any problems. Our community offers a full range of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care. Contact us to learn more. For the best introduction to our community, our team and our amenities as well as our residents; we encourage you to schedule a tour. If possible, join us for lunch during your tour.
