Looking for Assisted Living in the Beaverton, Oregon Area?

December 10, 2020 by Karla A

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, MorningStar of Beaverton may be the place for you. For seniors who wish to maintain their independence but require assistance with ADLs (activities of daily living), our 66 assisted living suites are equipped with all of the modern conveniences and safety features. Available in a variety of well-designed floor plans, suites have wall-to-wall carpeting, high ceilings, lots of windows, ceiling lights, and mini-blinds.

In assisted living, we offer various levels of support with the ADLs (we have 5 levels in all), and your care plan is determined after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director, and in agreement with you and your family. Various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte. However, regardless of your level of care, all assisted living residents have access to around-the-clock Care Managers to ensure your safety as they compassionately meet your expressed (and even unexpressed) needs.

Why we believe our assisted living to be different from that of other communities is by the type of individuals who make up our team. When we set out to hire a new staff member, we look for virtues such as character, kindness and selflessness as we believe these are more important than education or experience. Moreover, many of our “Great Hearts” come to us for a job as they love the idea of working for a company with core values that include Love, Respect, Honesty, Fairness, Goodness, and Kindness!

Finally, MorningStar wants you to know we have made many changes in our community in our coordinated defense in the fight against the coronavirus. As the nation slowly reopens, MorningStar of Beaverton is judiciously following our state’s guidance in terms of phasing and pacing. Please visit our website for a virtual tour of our beautiful community and to learn more about MorningStar’s commitment to delivering service with sincerity, warmth and depth of purpose.

MorningStar of Beaverton’s unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. A Community with Several Neighborhoods under its Roof

December 05, 2020 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

The MorningStar of Arvada senior living community is a beautiful, safe place to age in place and offers the benefit of being one community with several neighborhoods under its roof.  We start with 112 fully-equipped bright independent and assisted living suites that just need your furnishings and personal treasures in a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (some as large as 1374 square feet).  Our memory care wing has another 29 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

To provide the kind of memory care Arvada, CO families can depend on; we begin with a high staff to resident ratio.  We then provide all employees comprehensive training in our “Lavender Sky” program that encompasses our philosophy and approach to memory care and leads to a better understanding of the disease.  In addition along with a whole range of meaningful activities and programs, residents receive full-time non-medical care, transportation, and a meal service geared toward their special needs.  They also receive assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs) that include dressing, toileting, eating, transferring from a bed or a chair, etc., and more.  All of this is done with the belief that caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is our calling—our privilege, as we find ways to celebrate and elevate life.

Moreover if you start out in independent living, you have the comfort of knowing if you later require help with the ADLs, you will get first priority for an assisted living suite.  In fact residents can transfer to Assisted Living or Memory Care, depending on the availability of the desired suite; and if there is any delay, you are welcome to bring in a home care agency in the interim.  And there is no internal Transfer Fee.  Please visit our website for more info.

MorningStar of Arvada offers the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we work toward creating a true home for residents amidst a serene setting.  Please visit our website to learn more about compassionate memory care Arvada, CO families count on.

As We Age, Socializing Opportunities Often Start to Diminish

December 05, 2020 by Karla A

As we age, socializing opportunities often start to diminish. Many seniors no longer go into an office daily; while others start to feel uncomfortable driving, have mobility issues or physical ailments, have experienced the recent loss of a spouse, or other factors that limits their ability to socialize. Now add in the fact that many seniors are refraining from joining family activities due to COVID-19, it can be a lonely time for many older adults.

Lack of socialization in the elderly has many downsides. Seniors who say they feel isolated and lonely have been found to have higher rates of depression, more anxiety, lower sense of self-esteem, and shorter life-spans. Conversely older adults with a more robust social network appear to benefit from better physical, mental and cognitive health. Studies show socially active seniors handle stress better, which in turn leads to better cardio health and improved immune systems.

While many senior communities may not be as open to the public as they were before the start of the pandemic; nonetheless community living provides peace of mind to residents knowing someone is always around. At the MorningStar Senior Living communities, we adhere to the various states’ guidelines in which a particular community is located to keep residents as safe as possible.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we proudly announce we are “OPEN to LIFE WHAT EVER the SEASON” and that “COVID-19 HAD NO POWER TO CANCEL LOVE!” And we practice that philosophy every day. We continue to offer opportunities to socialize and connect with others while still remaining safe. With 66 bright suites for assisted living, MorningStar apartments are true homes that offer residents privacy, comfort, and ease. Please see our website to discover why MorningStar of Beaverton is a step above an ordinary assisted living facility.

Scientists Find Clues that May Help Us Age Better

November 30, 2020 by Karla A

An interesting study from geneticists at Stanford University’s School of Medicine is discovering distinct patterns in how people age and say it may offer a path to better navigate the aging process. As one of the lead researchers, Dr. Michael Snyder explains, staying healthy isn’t just about how old you get to, but rather “how you get old.”

Snyder’s team has discovered what they call body “ageotypes” that offer specific clues to how we experience aging through the course of our lifetime that result in “very distinct patterns” within these various groups. Moreover scientists hope that it may give people information to how they can better take care of themselves to improve their own aging journey.

The study looked at the differences between biological age and chronological age of the participants and attributes some of it to lifestyle choices such as a smoker’s lungs or the health of the heart in a chronically obese person. In addition, researchers explain this is not the only factor that influences aging but that different ageotypes may actually define how a person’s body ages, with certain parts aging faster or slower.

So far the team has identified four distinct ageotypes: metabolic agers, people whose immune systems age fastest; immune agers; liver agers; kidney agers; and say there will eventually be more types. Right now they believe that once doctors have use of this type of information, they can help their patients make actionably plans tailored to their specific needs to not only live longer but better. For instance if your doctor identified you as a metabolic ager, he could suggest a plan that included eating healthier and exercising.

Fall Foods that Taste Good & are Good for Us

November 22, 2020 by Karla A

Every fall, many of us treat ourselves to a variety of pumpkin dishes from spicy lattes to breads and pies. However this time of year many of our seasonal foods are not only tasty but healthy. The cranberry is one of these foods, which has medical experts giving it at a “super food” status. The Medical News Today website explains that cranberries are high in nutrients as well as antioxidants.

In fact “research has linked the nutrients in cranberries to a lower risk of urinary tract infection (UTI), the prevention of certain types of cancer, improved immune function, and decreased blood pressure.” Other studies have found cranberry supplements to be beneficial in reducing a person’s body mass index (BMI) as well as improve HDL (high density lipoprotein) levels (good cholesterol).

There are also tasty substitutes to help flavor food rather than using salt or sugar. Fresh garlic is one of these. The National Cancer Institute lists garlic “as food that may help fight stomach and colon cancers in some folks.” Other studies have found it may have a small effect on lowering the body’s blood cholesterol.

Cinnamon is another seasoning that adds lots of favor to fall dishes. Beyond its good taste, several recent studies show it may help to lower blood glucose levels for people with Type 2 diabetes, which would be great news for the almost 85 million prediabetes in the country. Adding cinnamon to our diet is as easy as putting a dash in a cup of coffee, tea or cider or sprinkling it on apple slices.

Ginger is another food easy to incorporate into many different dishes and medical experts say it great for the digestive system and helps lessen nausea and motion sickness. Great in Asian dishes and can be added to salad dressings or used in a sauce over grilled fish. Also if you haven’t yet discovered the benefits of turmeric, now would be a good time to do so. Containing curcumin, it has been shown to offer “potential anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant properties in animal and laboratory studies.”

At the MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community, we pride ourselves on providing residents with a lifestyle of comfort and wellness including our 5-star food service. Meals are prepared largely from scratch and contain fresh foods and seasoning of which some are locally sourced. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about our 38 Casitas designed for independent living, 65 private suites for assisted living, and 35 secure suites devoted to caring for seniors with memory impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.

Gift Ideas for the Holidays or Just to Bring a Smile to a Loved One’s Face

November 19, 2020 by Karla A

As the holidays quickly approach, many of us wonder what to get mom or dad or other beloved seniors on our gift list. Moreover while this has been a tough year for most of us, many seniors have been isolated from their children and grandchildren due to the pandemic, making it especially difficult. This is why we want our senior loved ones to know they are very much loved and missed.

If you are buying a gift for a parent in an apartment or senior living community, remember they most likely do not have lots of space to store things so be circumspect about buying a large gift that will used only occasionally. Consider something like a wreath for outside their door to cheer up and personalize their space. Also keep in mind it doesn’t necessarily have to be holiday related but one that can be used all year long. If they have a window where they could see a bird feeder, check with management to see if you can hang one outside. You could also give them a book of birds in their area so they can identify their visitors, and be sure to bring bird seed to refill it.

Even if they live in the Sunbelt without the severe winters of the northern states, they may still appreciate a warm throw, new sweater or a light jacket as many elderly adults tend to feel chilly. Cold feet are another common complaint among the elderly so a new pair of gripper slippers or socks with grips on the bottom to prevent fall would surely be appreciated. Pampering them with a basket full of luxury soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and creams is another idea as many older adults suffer from very dry skin; or if they are crafters, put together a basket of new craft and art supplies.

Other ideas include giving them a subscription for a large print magazine or a coffee table book that targets their interest. Moreover how about a basket of personalized stationary, a selection of greeting cards and stamps to make it easy for them to send well wishes and greeting to friends and family? It dad or mom is a huge sports fans; consider updating their team merchandise to get them in the spirit. Check the Internet for other ideas and remember to keep the video calls, emails and photos of the family coming!

MorningStar’s Casa Sandoval unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve. We are set in a warm, loving environment with exceptional architecture and resort-style amenities. Dealing with Stress can Adversely Affect Our Mental & Physical Health

November 15, 2020 by Karla A

We have all gone through the ups and downs of dealing with a pandemic over the last 8 months or so.  Just when we think things are getting better, your community has a resurgence of COVID or your family is struggling with a job loss or other problems.   Experts say this is why it is important to keep ourselves mentally fit and to remember that constant stress can also have an impact on our physical health.  Stress is linked to a wide range of health problems including heart disease as well as affects our mood, sleep and appetite.

An article by Harvard Medical Publishing says doctors are not sure exactly how chronic stress affects the heart but speculate it may likely trigger inflammation, which is a “known instigator of heart disease.”   While we may not fully understand the role stress plays in our health, doctors say we do know that stress can cause people to act in ways that increase their risk for heart disease including poor eating habits and a lack of energy for healthy habits such as exercising.  It is also believed that not handling stress well can lead to other unhealthy heart behaviors like drinking too much alcohol, abusing drugs, and smoking.

The article suggests a few changes in our way of thinking may help individuals deal with stress better.  The first piece of advice is to stay positive and to find ways to add laughter into your life.  “Laughter has been found to lower levels of stress hormones, reduce inflammation in the arteries, and increase "good" HDL cholesterol.”  Other tips include practicing meditation and exercising.  Both help reduce blood pressure and stress.  Another key suggestion is to unplug and escape from the world for a period of time each day.  Do something that gives you pleasure such as listen to music, take a warm bath or work on a hobby.  Another good way to reduce stress is to get out and enjoy nature.

Visit our website for pricing and availability at the most trusted independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada, CO offers.

Hearing Loss and an Increase Risk of Dementia

November 09, 2020 by Karla A

John Hopkins recently published a study that found mild hearing loss doubles the risk for dementia.  The nearly 12 year study included 639 adults and further reported that a moderate hearing loss tripled the risk, and people with severe hearing loss were five times more likely to develop dementia.

The study was headed by Frank Lin, M.D., Ph.D., who explains that the problem may come from the fact that many people who experience hearing loss deliberately avoid being around others and socially isolate.  A hearing loss makes it difficult for the person to follow conversation and they don’t like to put themselves in social situations that make them uncomfortable.   Another problem is it actually makes our brain’s work harder as it mutes some of the subtle sounds our ears intuitively use to help us safely walk.

Dr. Lin says his group has another study planned to determine if hearing aids help to mitigate some of the negative effects of hearing loss including the higher risk of dementia.  He does add that hearing aids certainly help individuals get back into the conversation and to enjoy being around their friends and family again.

Statistics show that while almost 27 million Americans age 50 years and older have some level of hearing loss, only one in seven people use a hearing aid.  If you think your hearing may be diminished, you should make an appointment with an audiologist for a complete hearing check.  Doctors also encourage individuals not to fall prey to the many myths involving hearing aids including worrying about looking older by wearing one as today’s hearing aids are less conspicuous and smaller than ever.  And yes, doctors do say there is a breaking in period for a hearing aid but most doctors and hearing centers offer a trial period to make sure it is the right fit for you.

Please visit our website to learn more about the most trusted independent living, assisted living and memory care in Arvada, CO.

Is it the Flu or COVID?

October 30, 2020 by Karla A

Hopefully you have had or are planning to shortly get your annual flu shot, but even if you have had yours, you may still want to know the difference between the flu and COVID-19. Doctors say in order to know for certain, you need to get tested. While symptoms are similar and include fever, aching muscles, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, and headache, the biggest differences is in the case of the flu. a person typically feels the sickest in the first week of the illness. COVID-19 is characterized by feeling much worst in the second or third week of the disease and can take much longer to recover from.

One symptom unique to COVID is the loss of smell and taste. While not everyone experiences this symptom, it is one of the unique features of the disease. With the flu, the incubation period is much shorter as a person can begin to feel sick within one to four days after contracting the virus. The coronavirus can take anywhere from two to 14 days from infection to begin to feel symptomatic and is a much more contagious disease.

Another concern of doctors is that someone could become infected with both viruses at the same time. However health experts hope that with the type of precautions we are taking to prevent the spread of the coronavirus such as mask wearing, handwashing and social distancing, it will also help to prevent the spread of the flu.

The MorningStar at Golden Ridge senior living community has 65 private assisted living suites and another 35 secure suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairments. Additionally tucked into their own private neighborhood, our 38 independent living Casitas are designed to meet the needs of active seniors. To keep all those beneath our roof safe from disease, we have rigorous protocols in place throughout every phase of our operation as well as follow safety measures for accepting new residents. Now is the Time to Try Out those Hobbies You Have Wanted to Do!

October 25, 2020 by Karla A

As many of us are spending more time at home, we are also searching for new, interesting things to do. Along with the satisfaction and fun we derive from learning and improving our skills in any number of activities, did you know it may also benefit our health? In fact studies have shown that cultivating hobbies isn’t just a relaxing break from day-to-day responsibilities and chores, but can provide both mental and physical health benefits. One such study found participants engaging in leisure activities had “immediate stress relief, as well as lower stress and depression in the longer term.” Other studies found participants who enjoyed leisure activities experienced lower blood pressure and had a more positive picture of their overall health.

One thoroughly enjoyable activity is to read. Reading not only opens doors to new places and new ideas but introduces us to people that are not the same as us. If you need ideas on what to read, just google best books of 2020 and you will have a whole range of ideas. Moreover if you have a tablet or e-reader such as a Kindle or Nook, you can easily download books from a number of book sellers. If you would like to get more social, start a virtual book club or join one already online.

One interesting website that may help you become a lifelong learning and expand your horizons is Great Courses Plus. By partnering with renowned organizations such as the National Geographic, History®, Smithsonian, Mayo Clinic, and The Culinary Institute of America, they are able to offer a course on most any topic you can think of. Other fun activities may include joining an online choral group if you love to sing or to take look at the many YouTube exercise videos to keep you moving.

Now is also a good time to start an indoor garden, learn to make jewelry or learn calligraphy and personalize birthday and holiday cards. If you have always wanted to be a better cook, arrange flowers, or finally start that scrapbook, what’s stopping you? This summer I spent a couple of days watching YouTube videos with my grandson as we tried to learn new card tricks. The list goes on and on so why not get started improving your skills, broadening your interest, and having fun?

Along with a Flu Shot, Doctor Recommend another Vaccine for Seniors

October 19, 2020 by Karla A

Most of us have heard the CDC and other health professionals stress the importance of everyone getting a flu shot this year. However you may not have heard about another important vaccine recommended for anyone over the age of 50. Shingrix is a vaccine designed to prevent shingles and was introduced to the public in 2017. The CDC reports Shingrix is the preferred shingles vaccine as it offers more than a 90 percent success in preventing shingles. However for the last couple of years, there have been shortages of the vaccine and it was not available to many older adults.

While you should always check with your healthcare provider before getting any vaccine including the shingles’ vaccine, as of July 2020, a company’s spokesman said GSK's Shingrix is no longer on the CDC's shortages list, and there is now a supply “available to meet demand across all distribution channels.” They still suggest you check with your drugstore or doctor to make sure they have the vaccine available.

The CDC says the reason so many older adults are eager to get the vaccine is that “nearly one in three people in the U.S. develops shingles at some point.” They add that symptoms include pain, rash, itching, and first fluid-filled, then eventually crusting blisters that can lead to permanent scarring.

It is recommended that anyone over the age of 50 gets the Shingrix vaccine even if they are uncertain whether they have had chickenpox in the past or have a history of shingles. The CDC also says you should get the Shingrix vaccine even if you got the Zostavax vaccine in the past. Zostavax is a live vaccine and is only about 51 percent effective toward preventing shingles.

Medical experts explain that the Shingrix vaccine is a recombinant vaccine. “This means vaccine manufacturers created it by altering and purifying DNA that codes for an antigen to produce an immune response to fight the virus.” Shingrix requires two shots taken at least two to six months apart. Common side effects from the vaccine include pain, swelling, itching and soreness at the site of the shot, and a small number of people report headaches. The CDC says to consult your healthcare provider to learn whether a Shingrix vaccine is the right treatment option for you.

October 15, 2020 by Karla A

Along with assisted living, Beaverton, Oregon’s MorningStar community offers 38 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of those with memory impairment caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe.

Our holistic approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of dementia. Providing loving support for our residents, we enter with insight and intentionality as we step into their “purple world” and cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

We also embrace the world of dementia, which begins with accepting the diagnosis, as difficult as this can be. Utilizing MorningStar’s extensive experience, we have developed a deep understanding of the brain disease, regardless of the type of dementia, and embrace the changes needed to ensure the finest care. This includes embracing our own communication style to calm or stimulate and physically embracing our tender residents as we recognize the power of touch. However most importantly, we embrace hope.

Lavender Sky’s last component is exploration, and is approached each day with a wide range of purposeful, individualized solutions. Acknowledging that the essence of the person lies beneath the fog of the disease, we explore a person’s life, history and preferences to create a personalized care plan.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we also feel it is our job to help support our residents’ families. Along with education, we show them how to follow our lead and enter into the world of their loved ones. Please contact us for more information about our experienced, compassionate memory care.

Seniors Can Really Benefit from Positive Thinking

October 15, 2020 by Karla A

There are many examples of how the power of positive thinking has changed people’s lives for the better.  When we take a positive attitude, it helps us to be more successfully in most every aspect of our lives; and experts say it can be even more important as we age.

Tom Caklos, founder of the www.positivecreators.com website, explains that positive thinking “is a critical ingredient for the well-being and health when a person is on the last leg of his or her life after completing all responsibilities and fulfilling all goals.”  He adds it is an important tool to help the elderly transform their lives and fill it with passion, energy and joy.”

So how can a senior who may be experiencing the loss of independence or a loved one, challenging health problems, and/or chronic pain cultivate positive thinking?  Experts suggest getting into the habit of using positive affirmation to change negative thinking into positive thoughts.  Moreover when we focus on the changes we wish to make in our lives, it can help boost self-esteem and confidence.

Positive affirmations can be simple and include things like giving thanks each day for your longevity and for all of the people in your life who you love and who love you.  Be grateful for the wisdom you have learned in life and recognize your ability to contribute.   Affirm that these are the best years of your life, that you have the right to good health, and the right to live with joy and purpose.

The beautiful MorningStar of Arvada senior living community has a sterling reputation in the greater Denver area.  This is probably due in part to our mission to value all seniors as gifted and contributing individuals; and our commitment to creating a community that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence.  We offer 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites, with another 29 secure memory care suites in our Reflections’ wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  When visiting our website, please read our protocols for dealing with COVID-19 and how we are safely accepting new residents into our loving independent living, assisted living and memory care community.
