Both Aerobic Exercise and Strength Training are Important

March 25, 2020 by Karla A

Health providers say that whether you or 18 or 80, it is important to do both cardiovascular exercises as well as strengthening exercises.   In addition to experiencing the benefits of better tone and shape, “research now links not just aerobic exercise but strength training with a reduced risk of death from all causes.”   Presently the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine recommends doing strength training at least two times a week.

Many older adults do not think about strength training, and for those that are exercising, have limited their exercise to things like walking, swimming, jogging, or bike riding.  Dr. Jennifer Kraschnewski, an associate professor of medicine, pediatrics and public health sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine, explains we now have very good evidence that shows 80-year-olds are as able to improve their muscle mass as 50-year-olds.   She adds, “and this can be done reliably over a very short period of time – something as short as two to three months."

The large 2016 study found strengthening exercises helped to prevent age-related bone and muscle loss.  Led by Dr. Kraschnewski, the study drew on data from the National Health Interview Survey and followed 30,000 adults age 65 years and older for fifteen years.   While only 10 percent of the participants met the national guidelines for twice weekly strength training, those individuals had 46 percent lower odds of dying from any cause, or all-cause mortality.   Furthermore, they were less likely to die from cancer or cardiovascular disease.

Experts say you do not have to start lifting heavy weights as strength training includes using exercise bands, doing push-ups or yoga.  However, be sure to check with your physician before you began any new exercise.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers plenty of ways our seniors can stay active with an onsite pool, fitness centers and lots of life enrichment activities.  Our beautiful community has independent and assisted living as well as memory care.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Before starting any exercise, be sure to consult with your health care provider.

How is Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnosed?

March 22, 2020 by Karla A

Experts say it is important to seek the advice of your doctor if memory problems are seriously affecting your life.  To determine if you or a loved one has Alzheimer's disease, the Mayo Clinic explains, “doctors conduct tests to assess memory impairment and other thinking skills, judge functional abilities, and identify behavior changes. They also perform a series of tests to rule out other possible causes of impairment.”

During your appointment, the Mayo Clinic says expect to be evaluated on:

·         Whether you have impaired memory or thinking (cognitive) skills

·         Whether you exhibit changes in personality or behaviors

·         The degree of your memory or thinking impairment or changes

·         How your thinking problems affect your ability to function in daily life

·         The cause of your symptoms

Tests include neuropsychological tests that are used to access your abstract thinking, problem-solving skills, memory, language usage and other related skills.  Your doctor may also schedule braining-imaging tests.  While these brain scans are not used to diagnose Alzheimer’s, they can detect other conditions such as hemorrhages, brain tumors or damage from a past stroke.  They are also used to establish a baseline in terms of the amount of degeneration seen on the scans.

Your doctor may also talk with your family to learn more about the types of changes they have noticed and how they have affected who you are now.  All of the information is then used to rule out other conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, strokes, or depression that may be causing your symptoms.

It is understandable that people are often afraid to go to a doctor once they suspect Alzheimer’s.  Furthermore, many feel that since there is no cure, what is the point?  However, doctors stress once you are diagnosed with the disease, you can start getting the proper treatment as well as consider your care options and plans for the future.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Rave Reviews for MorningStar of Beaverton

March 15, 2020 by Karla A

As it turns out, not only do we feel that we are one of the area’s finest senior living communities, but many of our residents and families are glad to tell us they agree!  You cannot imagine how gratifying this is for the entire MorningStar of Beaverton’s team, as we are dedicated to providing residents with all the care and services they need for carefree retirement years.

One of the things we always encourage interested families to do is to schedule a tour with us.  We sincerely believe that you cannot experience the loving, warm atmosphere of the Beaverton community without a firsthand view.  Therefore, to hear the following from a prospective resident was music to our ears.  She begins her review by saying, “I toured MorningStar a few weeks ago and I cannot begin to tell you how impressed I was! As I entered, the residents were being entertained by a singer and his accompanist. He was singing classic songs from the 30's 40's and 50's. To watch the residents sing along or tap their foot with a smile on their face was heartwarming! I was welcomed by a staff member that toured me around what I can only describe as a beautiful home in a caring neighborhood.”  She goes on to say, “I can't say enough about this place, it is a must see! I want to live here!”

We were again reminded of how very proud we are of our loving team as we read the words of a family member who writes that her mother has been a MorningStar resident for several months.   Here is part of her glowing review, “MorningStar staff work SO hard to meet mom’s needs, as well as the family’s, when any questions or situations may arise. We actually have a “dream team” who we love - and they do mom’s hair perfectly. They know mom loves music - so they make sure she gets to every performance that comes. It’s the little things that count sometimes to make someone feel cared for - and put the family at ease - and they’ve nailed it.”

Lastly, from a resident who writes about the dining experience at MorningStar of Beaverton, “Senior living dining at MorningStar is fabulous, like family! Great menu options are available every day with snacks, fresh fruit, and cookies for later, if you get hungry. I have been here about 6 months now. I look forward to the great food Tom (Executive Chef) and his team prepare for us that is shared over good conversation with everyone. Tom comes out and gives everyone a big hello and hug making them feel welcome and put a smile on their face. Even the silverware is wrapped in a linen napkin just like at a restaurant for fine dining. Holidays are special as well. For Christmas we had a choice of prime rib or salmon. WOW!!!

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to schedule a visit to see firsthand the finest senior living in Beaverton.

MorningStar Offers Loving Memory Care and Support to Families

March 15, 2020 by Karla A

In addition to independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Arvada offers 29 secure suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  We do not just care for our special residents’ needs but also provide support to their families. We know that a dementia diagnosis and prognosis is met with all kinds of questions and anxiety, and part of our job is to help families cope with the uncertainty.  As they try to adjust to their new reality, we deliver hope, and for the memory-impaired, hope comes wrapped in intentionality and creativity.

Our extensive experience in dementia care has shown us that healing always comes from human touch, from empathy, and from purposeful engagement.  Dementia sufferers live in a purple world – an alternative reality, and the best way to reach them is to “get purple” too. Right from the beginning of our relationship with a resident, we find out as much as we can about their history, their preferences and special talents and use that to help us sort through what their behavior is really trying to communicate.  For example, if a resident is getting agitated and saying they must go home, we respond with, “Tell me about your home; what is it like? Why do you love it so?”

In addition, our team encourages families not to dwell on what has been lost but rather to be surprised by what is found.  We have discovered that if we truly enter the moment, we can embrace what comes next. To help guide our families, we recommend they learn as much as they can about the disease because with understanding, comes acceptance.  We also think it is beneficial to join an Alzheimer’s Association support group. Lastly our families are always welcomed and encouraged to join us as we participate in one of our Alzheimer’s Association events to help raise funds and awareness of the disease.

Please visit our website to learn more about our compassionate, loving memory care.  While you are there, use the link on our home page to setup a tour or to inquire about pricing and availability.

MorningStar of Arvada’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the area’s finest independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada CO has to offer.

To get the real feel of our lovely community, we encourage you to schedule a tour by calling us or filling out the Pricing & Availability form on our website.  If you let us know your priorities, we will tailor your tour to make sure those are addressed and ask that you allow at least 45 minutes for your visit.  If you care to join us for lunch, please allow 90 minutes for your tour in order to enjoy a leisurely meal.  Let us know if you intend to do lunch when you set up the appointment.

The A Place for Mom’s website, which is the largest assisted living referral service, offers some tips on what to look for when taking a tour of a senior living community.  One of their suggestions includes “following your nose.”  In other words does the place smell and look clean and fresh?  Also ask about housekeeping and laundry services and what are the costs?

While you are there, look in at any activities going on in the community.  Do the staff and residents look like they are enjoying themselves (before you visit us, take a look at our monthly calendars online)?  Additionally, ask about the level of personal care provided as well as safety and security procedures.  Do not forget to look at the outdoor spaces.  Finally, A Place for Mom suggests that you think about whether you or your loved one would be happy living there, and in the end, trust your instinct and follow your heart.

Please visit MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s website to learn more about our gorgeous independent living, assisted living and memory care community.  If you like what you see, go ahead and schedule a tour.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Assisted Living

March 12, 2020 by Karla A

MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers a variety of senior living options including independent living, assisted living and memory care.  While memory care is all-inclusive, the cost of an assisted living suite is determined by the level of care the resident requires.

MorningStar’s assisted living has five levels and uses a simple point system, which factors into account the cost and time it takes to provide each service.  Whether it involves help with personal daily care activities such as grooming, bathing and toileting, or other assistance, we come up with a cumulative score that places you within one of our five levels.  Various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, are priced a la carte.

Before an assisted living resident even joins our community, our Wellness Director meets with them and their family to go over their medical history and discuss their needs.  From there, we create a care plan approved by the resident that ensures their comfort and safety.  In addition, we offer daily health monitoring and periodically review a resident’s care plan to make sure it is still up-to-date.

For assisted living and memory care, we provide dedicated 24-hour Care Managers, a CPR-trained staff member on every shift, and a full-time nurse onsite and on call 24-7.  We also have Certified Medication Care Managers, pharmacy services and much more.  For your safety, each room of our suites has an emergency call button.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s vibrant campus is conveniently located in Peoria, AZ at North 67th Avenue and West Golden Lane near shopping, medical facilities, and other services.  Please visit our website to learn more about the resort-style amenities and services we provide.

What Do Memory Care Communities Offer?

March 05, 2020 by Karla A

If a loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia and you are looking for the best care, a memory care community may be your answer.  While typically more expensive than other senior living options, they are equipped to provide the most comprehensive care.

Memory care communities such as MorningStar of Beaverton care for individuals with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.  Services include 24-hour supervision and typically offer a secure environment specifically designed to keep residents safe and secure. This means residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible and are free to explore their surroundings.

Another thing to know about memory care is that it has evolved through the years.  Today’s communities now offer wellness programs that help deal with memory impairment and wandering issues as well as other common dementia behaviors.  At MorningStar of Beaverton, we provide residents a number of specialized programs and highly personalized care that addresses their unique needs.

Studies also show residents in memory care communities have a higher quality of life.  A Place for Mom, the largest senior living referral website, reports that residents in memory care have “reduced medication and medication side effects; fewer falls, injuries, and hospital visits; increased nutrition and wellness; and greater independence and social interaction.”  They also add that close to 75 percent of residents experience an improvement or maintenance of mental functioning.

As a family member of a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia, you may be struggling to understand the disease and its consequences.  MorningStar of Beaverton recognizes many of our residents’ families need help navigating through the various challenges of the disease, and we are grateful we can provide the support they need.  Please visit our website to learn more about our individualized, holistic memory care.

An Active Social Life Makes Seniors Happier and Healthier

March 01, 2020 by Karla A

As we reach our senior years, research indicates socialization is more important than ever.  In fact, a Harvard University study shows that “elderly individuals, who had active social lives, were happier, healthier and more likely to live longer, than elderly people who did not have an active social life.”  Results suggest that “loneliness can deter an elderly person’s life, while socializing can enrich it.”

Seniors who regularly socialize are less likely to become depressed and are better-equipped to get help if they experience mental health problems.  Also older adults with a variety of social support are more likely to regularly exercise, which has been shown to keep the mind active and help slow down memory loss as well as improve overall health.  In addition, strong social support can help maintain a senior’s self-esteem and sense of worth.

As we socialize, our brains are mentally engaged, which improves our cognitive functions and may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Activities we do with friends can be fun and stimulate our mind such as playing cards, Bingo, and word or trivia games as well as something as simple as carrying on a conversation.

MorningStar of Beaverton offers 66 private assisted living suites and 38 secure memory care suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  Our beautiful community has plenty of common areas to sit and relax or enjoy a pleasant conversation with a friend.  To keep residents entertained or as busy as they want to be, our monthly calendar is loaded with a wide range of activities and wellness programs including daily exercise classes, games, live entertainment and special events.  If you are looking for senior living in Beaverton, OR, please visit our website to learn more.

The Often Overlooked Benefits of Working in Assisted Living

February 29, 2020 by Karla A

Our beautiful senior living communities in the greater Phoenix area include MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and our newest community, MorningStar at Golden Ridge.   Each of our loving residential homes is seeking compassionate individuals with a felt calling to serve to fill a variety of assisted living jobs.

If the idea of working in senior living is new to you, you may be unaware of the many rewards it offers both personally as well as professionally.  Assisted living communities such as MorningStar’s Phoenix homes offer free specialized training such as our proprietary Radiance service initiative, our Lavender Sky memory care program, CPR, and other meaningful training.  These programs are intended to establish your status as a professional service provider.

Another great thing about working in assisted living is your co-workers.  You will find yourself working alongside men and women who have also prioritized serving others as a worthy pursuit, and understand the magnitude of their contributions to society.  Furthermore as they too are dealing with some of the same challenges you are, they are the perfect people to understand your occasional frustrations.

Working in assisted living additionally provides the opportunity for you to build special relationship with society’s true heroes – our residents.  By taking the time to listen, we can learn many of life’s lessons from seniors and enjoy their incredible stories of times past.

As MorningStar’s Phoenix communities are true homes and operate around-the-clock, some of our openings include evening, night and weekend shifts, and may be full or part-time positions.  To enable a healthy work-life balance, we strive to honor shift preferences and to present predictable schedules. We know our homes would not be able to deliver the type of service our brand is known for without our dedicated team members, which is why we are pleased to pay competitive wages and offer comprehensive benefits.  These include medical, vision, and dental as well as vacation, sick and holiday pay.

Please take a look at one of our available assisted living jobs in Phoenix, Glendale, Fountain Hills or our newest home in Peoria.  The MorningStar website’s Career page has more information regarding the most up-to-date openings, detailed job descriptions, and a convenient online application.

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Fountain Hills & Golden Ridge communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built on honoring God and valuing all seniors, and we are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve. Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Disease Can be Overwhelming

February 29, 2020 by Karla A

The Alzheimer’s Association states that the number of adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease is increasing and there is now an estimated 5.8 million Americans with the disease.  They add that every 65 seconds someone comes down with the disease.  Among that number includes approximately 200,000 people who are under the age of 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer's.   Experts also predict that as we continue to live longer, the number of those age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s will grow to 13.8 million by 2050.  Right now, it is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, and currently, cannot be prevented or cured.

These sobering statistics mean that more families are finding themselves in the situation of having a family member with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.  For those who are family caregivers, the Alzheimer's Association found it can take an overwhelming toll on them both physically and emotionally.  Their studies show that close to 60 percent of Alzheimer’s and dementia caregivers “rate their stress level as high or very high.”  Approximately 40 percent of family caregivers suffer from depression and required healthcare services related to the emotional and physical toll of their caregiving.

Experts recommend that if you are family caregiver that you reach out for help from a variety of sources including relatives, friends, and local community organizations.  Caregiver support groups can also be helpful as you can connect with other who are dealing with the same problems.  Respite care and day care centers can also give you some relief from the responsibility and difficulties of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s.

Another solution is to contact MorningStar at Golden Ridge and learn about our experienced and compassionate memory care.  Along with independent and assisted living options, we have 35 secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please see our website for more information about the loving approach we take to memory care.

Assisted Living May Enhance Your Quality of Life

February 28, 2020 by Karla A

Many people think they already know everything there is to know about senior living communities – “a place where old people go to die.”  This could not be further from the truth.  As the largest assisted living referral service, a Place for Mom explains, “senior assisted living is a viable option that can enhance your quality of life by empowering you to live that life the way you want to.”  Today’s vibrant communities may include independent living for active seniors, assisted living for those needing help with personal daily care activities, and memory care.

In fact, assisted living communities such as MorningStar of Beaverton are specifically designed to give aging adults the opportunity to maintain their independence while providing access to the assistance they need.  In addition, they get the benefit of built-in companionship as well as a range of meaningful wellness programs and activities.

Another misconception about assisted living is that you will have to give up your privacy.  At our community, residents have a choice of spacious private suites in a variety of floorplans with their own separate entrance.  Each suite is ready to move into and just needs your furnishings and personal items.

Also did you know that many of today’s communities including ours are pet friendly?  We recognize that for many seniors, their pet is a part of their family, and it is essential to their wellbeing to bring that member along with them as they transition to their new home.

People sometimes worry that moving into an assisted living home may further remove them from the comfort and security of knowing their family’s help is not far away.  At MorningStar, you no long need to worry about the risks of living alone.  We offer the comfort and security of 24/7 care so that if you need assistance in the middle of the night, someone is right there to help.

Please visit MorningStar of Beaverton’s website to learn more about our loving community.  We offer 66 assisted living suites in spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans. Within our Reflections Neighborhood, we have 38 suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment.

MorningStar of Beaverton represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. Call to schedule a visit to our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

Come Work for a Company that is Making a Difference in the World

February 28, 2020 by Karla A

The MorningStar Senior Living Company’s philosophy is to reflect the character of God, which is why we have chosen to direct our resources toward elevating the lives of those most in need.  To achieve these goals, we have committed to making a difference in our local communities here at home as well as throughout the world.

Our local efforts include serving our beloved seniors by operating the finest senior living communities in the country.  Scatter across the Western U.S., our homes offer independent living, assisted living and memory care and include four beautiful homes right here in the Phoenix area.  These include MorningStar at Arcadia, MorningStar of Fountain Hills, MorningStar at Arrowhead, and MorningStar at Golden Ridge.

Also as senior care professionals, one of the obvious places to focus our volunteer efforts on here in our own local communities is in service to organizations like the Alzheimer’s Association.  Throughout the year we raise funds as well as host and participate in events such as uplifting celebrations of “The Longest Day” and the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s.”

Around the world, MorningStar’s Vision and Mission includes being agents of justice and defenders of the poor, particularly children who find themselves trapped in broken societies and abject poverty in the world’s most remote places.  One such project has been investing in the people of Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua. MorningStar Founder/CEO, Ken Jaeger first visited the area in 2010 where he met Pastor Earl Bowie and his fledging orphan ministry, Casa Bernabé.  Today our concentrated volunteer efforts have made a loving difference in the orphanage, which today serves 140 children, and the surrounding village.

If you would love to be part of a company such as MorningStar, we currently have posted assisted living jobs in our Phoenix communities that include cooks, medication care managers/QMAPs, dining room servers, and housekeepers.  Whatever your role is with us, you will receive competitive wages and comprehensive benefits. Please visit our website to find a list of job openings, complete job descriptions, and an online application. Don’t wait to serve, do it today!

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Fountain Hills & Golden Ridge communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God and valuing all seniors, we are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve. A Healthy Diet is Even More Important as You Age

February 25, 2020 by Karla A

The National Resource Center on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Aging states that, “1 in 4 older Americans have poor nutrition.”  They explain that malnutrition puts them at risk of becoming overweight or underweight as well as cause weaken muscles and bones.

Poor nutrition also leaves you more vulnerable to disease and makes it harder to manage the diseases you may already have such as heart disease and diabetes.  An unhealthy diet can even jeopardize a senior’s immune system and make them more susceptible to colds and flus.

Furthermore, as many seniors experience a decrease in their appetite, they need to increase the nutrient density of their food, not necessarily portion size.  This means eating a well-balanced diet chock-full of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients as well as more fiber.   Avoid foods high in processed sugars, saturated and trans fats, and salt.  Eating alone can also decrease a senior’s appetite so make meals a more social occasion and serve foods that taste as good as they look and smell.

At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, we recognize that good nutrition is vital to seniors’ health, which is why we put such an effort into the food we serve our residents.  Starting with having our own Executive Chef, our meals are largely prepared from scratch and include the freshest ingredients.  In addition, we offer a range of nutritional choices including low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat so residents can self-manage their diet.  MorningStar’s chef even uses “super foods” such as acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and leafy, dark greens. Furthermore, meals are served restaurant-style in our lovely dining room, which is an ideal setting to socialize and enjoy a meal together.

Please visit our website for more details on all of the amenities and services offered at MorningStar at Golden Ridge.  We suggest you schedule a tour to see our beautiful community in person rather than just relying on our pictures.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Golden Ridge, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in the area.

Regardless of Your Age, You Can Benefit from Exercise

February 23, 2020 by Karla A

Regardless of your age, you can benefit from regular physical exercise.  Studies show exercise can help prevent heart disease, diabetes, and certain forms of cancer as well as reduce the pain associated with arthritis.  It can also improve balance, flexibility, endurance and strength.  Staying active can even improve sleep quality and duration and enhance your mood.

Different forms of exercises offer different benefits but please remember to check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise.  Stretching exercises can improve mobility and flexibility and relieve sore and stiff muscles.  They can also help to reduce lower back-pain, improve posture and increase blood flow and energy.

Aerobic exercises can help improve endurance and increase your breathing and heart rate.  Moderate aerobic exercises for seniors include walking briskly, swimming and dancing.  Doctors suggest you start slowly and build up your endurance, and if you have been inactive, start with 5 minutes of cardio a day several times a week and build from there.

In addition experts say it is important for the elderly to routinely do balance exercises as they can help prevent falls.  Most are easy to do and do not require any special equipment.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, our mission is to provide the best senior living in the area, which includes a wide range of programs and activities as well as nutritional daily meals.  WellStar, our signature wellness program, supports and encourages physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connections.  Visit our website to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.
