Age Related Hearing Loss

July 10, 2019 by Karla A

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Commucation Disorders (NIDCD) about one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss, and nearly half of those 75 and older have difficultly hearing.  This can make it hard for seniors to understand and follow a doctor's advice, to respond to warnings, and to hear doorbells and alarms.  Difficultly hearing also makes it hard for many elderly people to follow and engage in conversation with their family and friends.

Known as presbycusis, hearing loss in seniors generally occurs gradually and initially affects the ability to hear higher pitched sounds.  The person may notice that while the speech is loud enough, it sounds as if the talker is mumbling.  The condition is commonly caused by the loss of nerve hair cells in the Cochlea or the deterioration of other parts of the inner ear or auditory nerves.   Age-related hearing loss typically affects both ears equally.

In some cases, health conditions more common among the elderly such as high blood pressure and diabetes can additionally affect hearing.  Furthermore, certain medications including some types of chemotherapy drugs can cause hearing loss.

The NIDCD has a checklist to help seniors determine if they are experiencing hearing problems.  Questions include: Do you feel frustrated when talking to members of your family because you have difficulty hearing them?; Do you have difficulty hearing when someone speaks in a whisper?; and Do you that any difficulty with your hearing limits your personal or social life?

Another cause of hearing loss can be the result of long-term exposure to loud noise and is one of the most common occupational hazards.  The exposure damages the sensory hair cells in the ears, which do not grow back.  It is estimated that at least 10 million Americans have irreversible hearing loss due to long-term exposure to noise.

Seniors should discuss any hearing problems with their health care provider who will refer them to an otolaryngologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, throat, and neck.  The otolarynogogist will test your hearing, and if a problem is found, will refer you on to an audiologist who will determine the type and degree of hearing loss.   Either they or a hearing aid specialist will fit you for a hearing aid.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Financial and Care Planning for Seniors

July 08, 2019 by Karla A

Especially if you are an older adult, you should have a will or trust drawn up as well as a power-of-attorney and an advanced directive.   The difference between a will and a trust is a will is a legal document that goes into effect after the person dies while a trust goes into effect as soon as it is created.  The trustor (the creator of that trust) can name others to be in charge of the trust when she or he becomes incapacitated or dies.

A living will, also known as a Health Care Directive, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health care if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.  The person named as the health care authority has the power to make medical decisions and sees to it that the wishes of the person is carried out.

Another legal document many seniors find is a good idea to have is a Durable Power Of Attorney (DPOA).  The document is used if the person (the principal) ever becomes mentally incapacitated and covers both financial and medical decisions.   The attorney-in-fact or agent in effect becomes a legal guardian for the disabled principal.

These types of documents should be drawn up before a person becomes incapacitated.  If someone has a diminished capacity due to Alzheimer’s or another medical condition and needs someone to handle their medical and financial decisions, a person can pursue a legal Guardianship status for them.  Legal guardianship is granted by the courts and typically continues throughout the remainder of the person’s life.  Please refer to your financial consultant or attorney for more information.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Golden Ridge, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in Peoria, AZ.

Many Seniors Prefer Community Living

July 05, 2019 by Karla A

Did you know that studies show many older adults prefer the carefree life offered by senior living?  The idea of no longer having all of the responsibilities that come along with owning a home including the repairs and upkeep is very appealing to many seniors.  Furthermore, for seniors who still think moving into an assisted living community is a place people go to die, most likely have not visited one of today’s vibrant communities.

There are even studies that suggest moving into senior living may be a healthier option for some than living alone.  This can especially be true for seniors after the death of a spouse as many begin to feel isolated and lonely.  Not to mention the burden of keeping up with household chores such as cleaning, cooking, laundry or needing to move up and down stairs.

Senior living communities offer an individual the opportunity to easily make new friends as well as gives them the time to pursue special interests or to explore new hobbies.  Also communities typically provide amenities such as onsite fitness centers in addition to offering a range of exercise classes geared toward the fitness level of older adults.

MorningStar of Beaverton is a new assisted living and memory care community that that opened late last year.  We understand that for some the “MorningStar” name may be new to the Portland area, but we want to reassure you that MorningStar Senior Living is anything but new.  Our senior living communities are scattered throughout the Western U.S. and include MorningStar of Happy Valley, which is set to open in late 2019.

In addition, we want you know that our community is staffed by a compassionate, professional team of individuals who are experienced in all facets of senior living and committed to providing our residents a true “home.”  Visit our website for contact information and to find out more about our beautiful community.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar of Beaverton, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities. Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve. Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the finest senior living in Beaverton Oregon.

Walking Considered by Many Experts to be the Best Exercise for the Elderly

June 30, 2019 by Karla A

There have been a number of studies done that document the benefits of walking for older adults, and it is considered by many experts to be the safest and best exercise for the elderly.  Not only can it be performed at a low or moderate intensity and is easy on the joints, but it is also easy to start as it does not require any special equipment.

To get the most benefit out of walking, it is recommended you do it regularly.  The heart-healthy exercise can improve cardiovascular health and has been linked to lower risks of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and strokes.  Furthermore, researchers   have found that “even small amounts of walking each week have been shown to reduce these risks around 15% to 20%.”  Daily walking regimens have “shown a 30% to 50% reduction in participants’ risk of cardiac arrest.”

Other benefits of walking include stopping or decreasing bone mass loss as well as strengthening leg and abdominal muscles, which can improve balance and stability.  Walking can also lead to weight loss or help maintain weight if needed.  Seniors who regularly walk have shown an improvement in their sleep patterns and an increase in mental sharpness.  In addition it assists with joint support by moving the fluid within our joints/cartilage.  It can also help make you feel happier.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we believe in providing seniors with opportunities to stay fit and keep moving.  We also have lots of other activities to engage residents including crafts, sing-a-longs, games, movies and much more.  Please visit our website to learn more about Peoria’s best senior living community.

Visiting Someone with Dementia

June 28, 2019 by Karla A

If you have wondered how to make the most of your time when you visit a relative or friend suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, take some tips from the experts.  They have the experience to help your visit go more smoothly.

Their first tip is to adjust to your loved one as they are now and do not expect to have the same type of conversations with them as you once did.  As dementia care specialist Vivian Green Korner explains, “Conversations may become less intellect to intellect and more emotion to emotion.”

Another thing, focus on what the person still has rather than focusing on what they have lost.  They may enjoy stories about the past as well as love hearing music that reminds them of when they were young.  Anthony Cirillo, president of The Aging Experience and host of the Virtual Summit for Caregivers, say that, “Music activates something in people no matter how advanced their dementia.”  Also it may be helpful to bring photos, books or even tasty treats to share with your loved one.

In addition don’t waste time asking a lot of questions that may just confuse the person, instead, just live in the moment.  Talk about things you are seeing such as the color of the leaves on a tree outside the window or a pretty picture in the room.  If the person appears to be getting agitated, suggest getting up and taking a little walk as often a change of scenery can help to change their mood.

Remember it is important to make eye contact as a lot of your communication with the person will be non-verbal.  Experts also suggest touching a person before you start to speak as touch is a powerful communicator especially as their verbal skills are starting to diminish.

Along with 66 graciously appointed suites for assisted living, MorningStar of Beaverton offers 38 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  As dementia specialists, we understand the disease and provide care that treats the individual with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Please see our website for more.

MorningStar of Beaverton proudly provides the very best in senior living with our unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents amid a beautiful setting.  Please schedule a tour to discover our new assisted living and memory care community.

We Proudly Welcome Veterans to MorningStar at Golden Ridge

June 25, 2019 by Karla A

Throughout all of MorningStar’s communities, we are privileged to have veterans from all five branches of military service call us home.   Whenever we hear that veterans or families of vets are interested in MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we are pleased to direct them to local resources that can help to ease and quicken the application process for “Aid & Attendance”. This is a monthly benefit payment allocated by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs to certain wartime veterans and their survivors who qualify for financial need and have a doctor’s order for regular assistance with daily living activities.

Additional qualifications for the vets include having served at least 90 days of active duty, of which at least one day was spent serving during a period of a foreign war.  Also, the vet must not have been dishonorably discharged.  The Aid & Attendance benefit does not require the vet to have served overseas, seen combat or retired from the military.  For surviving spouses to be eligible for the benefit, they must have been married to the vet at the time of their death and never remarried.

Every state (including Arizona) has a Department of Military/Veteran Affairs staffed with Veteran Service Officers who will assist in completing the Aid & Attendance application.  Their services are free of charge and the process typically takes three to four months.

We encourage you to contact us to learn more about applying for the benefit.  MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers assisted living suites in a range of floor plans as well as secure suites devoted to the individualized care of those with memory impairment. For those looking for independent living, we have well-designed Casitas with attached garages.   Visit our website to set up a tour of our beautiful community.

MorningStar of Beaverton Takes Dining to the Next Level

June 23, 2019 by Karla A

At MorningStar of Beaverton, we proudly take dining to a new level with beautifully prepared meals served restaurant-style.  We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why we put so much emphasis on ensuring our food service is A+.

Furthermore, we believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other and is one of the great joys of living, especially when enjoyed within a community setting.  When we break bread together, it is much more than just physical nutrients as it helps to bond us as a family and as friends.

To ensure our food service is both delicious and nutritional, we have our own highly-trained professional chef who is in charge of all meal prep.  Residents enjoy seasonal menus that are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest of ingredients of which come from high-quality producers and/or are locally sourced.  Meals are also modified to include an array of low sodium, sugar free, no sugar added, vegetarian and low fat choices so that residents can self-manage any dietary restrictions.

Recognizing that nutrient-rich foods can help stimulate the appetite as well as support brain health, MorningStar of Beaverton’s meals are also prepared using ingredients with high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.   These “super foods” include leafy, dark greens; dark chocolate; acai; berries, and Omega 3 fats.  Most importantly mealtime at MorningStar is a time for residents to relax and enjoy the company of fellow residents or family and friends.

Located in a suburb of Portland overlooking a beautiful natural wetland, MorningStar of Beaverton residents enjoy a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community within a loving atmosphere.  Please visit our website to learn more about the area’s best senior living community, and while you are there, set up a tour to see for yourself why residents are proud to call us home.

Do You have Questions about Senior Living Communities?

June 08, 2019 by Karla A

Many families know next to nothing about senior living when they first begin to look at the various options available.  At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we understand it is important to have answers ready for all of the questions and concerns that family members may have regarding our senior living community.

In fact, even before you contact us, you can visit our website and browse through the many informative resources we offer.  To get a sense of our history, mission and philosophy as well as the type of services we assume both locally and globally, take a few minutes to read through MorningStar’s “Our Heart” links.

To find answers to some of the questions you may have regarding care and services, we encourage you to take a look at our FAQs page.  One important question is how our prices are structured.  For example, assisted living monthly rental fees are based on the apartment’s square footage, location within the building, views and suite choices along with the level of care we will provide (based on a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director).  Also, we offer various auxiliary medical and non-medical services priced a la carte.

Another important resource from MorningStar is our Decision Guide, which is designed to help families decide whether the time is right for Senior Living, particularly Assisted Living.  You will find warning signs to look for and advice on how best to broach the subject of making the move to a senior community.

Please keep in mind that while our website it is a great way to familiarize your family with the many amenities and services offered by MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our team is more than happy to answer any questions not addressed.  As one of the area’s leading senior living communities, we offer 38 Casitas for independent living and 65 assisted living suites.  In addition, 35 secure suites are devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

The unique mission statement of MorningStar at Golden Ridge, “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living communities.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to schedule a tour to visit our exceptional community.

Learn About Companion Living at MorningStar of Beaverton

June 05, 2019 by Karla A

While seniors have discovered the many benefits of senior living, MorningStar of Beaverton understands that for some older adults the cost may be too high to comfortably afford.  This is why we consider it part of our job to help area seniors find creative ways to make the move to assisted living possible.

One of the things we offer to make it more affordable is “Companion Living.”  Whether you wish to move into assisted living or memory care, Companion Living allows two unrelated people of the same sex to share the expense of a suite.  Furthermore, if you do not have a friend or relative to share a suite with, we will carefully pair you up with another senior who shares your interests and background.

The advantage of companion living also goes far beyond economics as companionship is important for a person’s health and wellbeing. We believe we are designed by our Creator for relationships, and that isolation can drain us of energy and purpose.  When a senior loses their life partner after being married 40, 50, or 60 years, it can be a very lonely existence and a companion can help to diminish those feelings of loneliness, and help the person to reconnect.

Offering built-in companionship, it can additionally help to ease the transition of moving into a senior living community.  Also as roommates naturally look after each other’s interests, they may be the first one to notice changes in their roomies’ health or abilities.

Please visit our website to get an idea of the various amenities and services we offer as well as to set up a tour of our gorgeous community.  We are certain MorningStar of Beaverton’s stylish suites and inviting common areas will impress you from the first but the thing we are most proud of is our dedicated, loving team.

Discover the Benefits of Senior Living

May 31, 2019 by Karla A

Now that senior living communities have change dramatically from the past, more and more seniors are discovering the many advantages to senior living.  Whether you are a senior who requires a little extra care or an active one who desires a more carefree lifestyle, senior living communities are becoming more and more appealing.

Today’s independent living and assisted living communities offer comfortable, carefree retirement years and are designed to meet aging adults’ physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  In a senior living community such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, residents find it easy to socialize and meet new friends as well as to engage in a variety of meaningful activities.

Another benefit of senior living is you can leave behind all of the chores required of a homeowner such as mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, and other routine, time-consuming chores that can be difficult for seniors.  At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, someone else handles the maintenance while you have the freedom to concentrate on more fulfilling activities.

Many times, older adults have medical conditions that result in them no longer being able or feeling comfortable driving, which is why one of MorningStar’s services includes transportation.  We also provide routine trips to local shopping malls, entertainment venues, parks, museums and more.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge invites you to schedule a tour to see for yourself why our residents are proud to call us “home”.  Our community has 65 assisted living suites that include studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans.  In addition, we offer 38 two-bedroom Casitas for independent living and 35 secure suites for memory care.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s distinct mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options.  Our foundation is built upon honoring God, valuing all seniors, and investing in staff with a felt calling to serve.  Dedicated to creating a real home for residents within a beautiful setting, we encourage you to see for yourself the area’s finest independent and assisted living.

Does Your Parent Need More Care for Their Safety and Wellbeing?

May 28, 2019 by Karla A

Have you started to think your parent or a loved one may need more care in the near future to assure their safety and wellbeing?  If the time is coming when they will need help with daily personal care activities, you may want to consider assisted living. MorningStar of Beaverton is a residential home where your loved one will receive the care they need to allow them to live as independently as possible.

If this sounds like your situation, you will want to include your parent in the decision making process as the more they are involved, the better they will accept the decision.  In the case of a loved one in denial about the need for changes in their lifestyle, it may help to read suggestions from experts on how to navigate through the process.  MorningStar Senior Living has a Decision Guide, available through our website which discusses the journey of aging.

Stella Henry, R.N., author of The Eldercare Handbook, explains, “Many seniors unrealistically believe they can take care of themselves for the rest of their lives.”  She suggests you start laying the groundwork for eventual lifestyle changes now regardless of whether a change is eminent or sometime in the distant future.  Another specialist, Barry Jacobs, PsyD, a psychologist who has counseled many people through the emotional journey of moving elderly parents, advises adult children to ask their parent to “indulge” them by visiting an assisted living facility.  He adds that people are more likely to reconsider their position if a decision is of their own making.

MorningStar of Beaverton offers 66 stylish, private assisted living suites along with 38 secure suites devoted to individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases.  Our graciously-appointed community is located in a western suburb of Portland and enjoys a picturesque setting overlooking a natural wetland. Contact us for more information.
