Is it a Good Idea to Purchase a Hearing Aid Over the Counter?

June 21, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

Did you know the FDA has made changes to regulations regarding hearing aids, which now makes it possible to buy an FDA approved device over the counter (OTC)? While many of us have heard about the high cost of prescription hearing aids and that Medicare typically does not cover them, you may want to know whether the experts think an OTC purchase is a good idea.

The Harvard Medical School went to Dr. James Naples, assistant professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, to see if it is a viable option and to explain potential pros and cons. He explains that despite there being several types of hearing aids, they all amplify sound and use a combination of signaling processing and directional microphones to filter out background noise. However, he warns against confusing personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) with hearing aids as they only amplify sound.

To determine your level of hearing loss, experts recommend you start by getting a hearing test from an audiologist like you would get an exam from an optometrist when buying eyeglasses. This is especially necessary for severe hearing loss, as OTC devices are not appropriate for all types of hearing loss. For mild to moderate hearing loss, it may be possible to get good results by purchasing an OTC device without a hearing exam and fitting by an audiologist.

The next question routinely asked is if you will save money by purchasing an OTC hearing aid and the answer is most-likely yes as right now the average hearing aid runs anywhere between $2,000 to $4,000 per ear, and age-related hearing loss may be in one or both ears. OTC also helps reduce the price by eliminating the added expense of the hearing test along with the actual device being substantially lower. Doctors say the new regulations should increase competition and some estimates indicate prices could drop by as much as $1,600.

Dr. Naples cautions that just as drugstore readers are a great option for many, some individuals have more complicated issues that require more precise solutions. Hearing aids are the same. The doctor states the safest bet is to get a hearing test to confirm an OTC device is right for you.

Yoga Benefits Both Your Body and Brain

June 16, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

While practitioners have known for centuries the calmness and peace yoga brings into their lives, science has finally caught up with real evidence of its benefits to our brains. Studies show yoga elevates levels of the brain chemical gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAGA), which helps regulate nerve activity and is associated with better mood and decreased anxiety.

The Harvard Medical School journal writes, “Yoga strengthens parts of the brain that play a key role in memory, attention, awareness, thought, and language. Think of it as weightlifting for the brain.” Their evidence comes from several studies that used MRI and other brain imaging technology. Researchers found participants who practiced yoga regularly had a thicker cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory, than participants who did not practice yoga.

This could be significant because as people age, this is one of the areas in the brain that typically shrinks. As the older yoga practitioners had less shrinkage than non-practitioners, researchers say it suggests yoga can “counteract age-related declines in memory and other cognitive skills.”

Other benefits of yoga include helping individuals lose weight, sleep better, lower blood pressure and lower blood sugar levels to improve diabetes. It also helps people gain flexibility and muscle strength around arthritic joints and reduces the pain associated with the condition.

Should Mom or Dad be Living Alone?

June 07, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

If you noticed a change in mom or dad or another loved one after a recent visit from out of town, you are not alone. Experts say when families spend time together after a prolonged separation many adult children realize their parent is not doing as well as they thought they were living on their own.

Some of the most obvious signs a parent is having problems caring for him or herself is an unintended loss of weight, change in grooming habits or signs of a fall. The ADLs or Activities of Daily Living are used by experts to evaluate the needs of a person and include personal care such as bathing, dressing and toileting as well as transferring (ability to get in and out of bed, continence and eating.

Other important signs a person is no longer doing well on their own and could benefit from some sort of assistance are based on what experts call the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs). These include things like paying bills, taking care of their home, preparing and cooking meals, being able to get out of the home, and socializing.

At senior living communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we offer both independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our assisted living is designed to provide the services residents need to maintain their independence with 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses and more. Moreover, all residents are treated to a delicious, healthy restaurant-style dining service, wellness programs and activities, and sponsored community outings and events.

It’s Never Too Late to Improve Your Health

May 15, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

It is never too late to improve our health and making changes in our behaviors and attitudes can mean living a happier, longer life. Doctors say getting your weight under control, quitting smoking, eating more fruits and vegetables, and exercising can all significantly improve your health and longevity at any age.

Remember taking care of our health also includes our brains. Experts used to believe the brain could not make new neuron connections as we aged but research now shows the “brain remains nimble and capable of physical change and growth throughout life.” In fact, studies find people who step out of their comfort zone and try new hobbies and interests can improve their cognitive health.

Another misconception is thinking it is too late to start exercising or to lose weight. A meta-analysis of 39 studies on aging and resistance-type exercises such as lifting weights or using exercise bands, found it is possible to build muscle mass no matter what age. In the studies, “1,300 adults over the age of 50 who did some form of this kind of training, muscle mass increased by an average of nearly 2.5 pounds in just five months.”

Being positive is a trait that helps people deal more effectively with stress and worry and is linked to longevity. Researchers also find it is better for us to be in charge of our own medical care. One way to do this is to stay up-to-date on medical research and advice regarding care options as well as asking pertinent questions of our healthcare providers. Other things we can do to protect our health are to get appropriate screenings and tests, use our time productively and stay socially engaged.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is a 55+ community that offers seniors a lifestyle of comfort, wellbeing and as much or as little social engagement as you want. Our range of onsite amenities, care services, wellness programs and activities are designed for stress-free retirement years. Please visit our website for pricing and availability on unsurpassed senior living in Peoria, AZ.

Open Your Mind to New Hobbies and Activities

April 12, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

How long has it been since you really made the effort to learn something new? As we age, many of us can get stuck in a rut. However, opening our minds to new ideas and trying new activities can provide seniors with a renewed interest in life and help keep the brain sharp.

The choice of hobbies and activities for retirees is endless and includes dusting off old skills or learning something entirely new. Things like painting and drawing classes can be done in person or online. The same goes for listening to lectures, joining a book club or writing workshop, and learning a foreign language. If you need more computer skills or would like to know more about social media, join a class and get started.

If you have always wanted to play an instrument, what are you waiting for? Neuroscientists and music teachers say it is never too late to learn. Scot Hawkins, a piano teacher in Silver Spring, Md., says, “Ability is low on the list of what's required for adult students. Instead, attitude — especially patience — is everything.” Playing music is a great mental exercise and can help keep brain cells alive that would otherwise wither and die.

Chess, trivia, crossword and jigsaw puzzles as well as strategy board games help sharpen our cognitive skills as do various computer and video games. Other suggestions of engaging activities include trips to local museums, concerts, and plays.

Have you begun the search for senior living? If so, we encourage you to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge, conveniently located in a northwest suburb of Phoenix.  Our calendar is loaded with a wide range of activities and wellness programs including exercise classes, games, live entertainment and special events to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about exceptional independent living, assisted living or memory care at MorningStar.

Most Memory Lapses are a Result of Not Being Mindful

April 07, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

If you are a senior who is always looking for your phone, readers or car keys, most likely it is a normal part of aging. Lydia Cho, a psychologist and neuropsychologist with Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, says growing older brings with it these and other memory lapses like forgetting names of people we just met or the time of our next appointment. Moreover, younger people can also be forgetful; but experts caution serious memory loss needs to be checked out by a doctor.

Thankfully most memory lapses are more a matter of not focusing or being mindful of what we are doing. For example, many times we absentmindedly set down our keys or phone while we are distracted doing other things. To keep track of commonly misplaced items, experts say set up a basket on the counter just for those things. If you are someone who always worries if you turn off the oven, you probably did it without thinking. Next time as you turn off the oven, mindfully say to yourself “I am turning off the oven.”

If you worry about forgetting where you put something, take a picture of it sitting in the drawer or the shelf in the closet. Adapting these suggestions to other things should help improve your mindfulness. Another tip when meeting someone new is to take a moment to really look at the person and say their name back to them in your greeting. If you need more help to remember their name associate it with a friend or movie character, or a rhyming word.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge is designed to be a true home for our residents and offers all the amenities and services needed for their comfort, wellbeing and safety. Our luxury community offers independent living in two-bedroom casitas with attached garages and assisted living suites in a choice of studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floorplans. In addition, we have memory care suites for those suffering with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   Please contact us or visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s exceptional senior living in Peoria, AZ.

The Importance of Keeping Both Your Body and Brain Fit

February 10, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

Research supports the importance of seniors staying physically fit as well as keeping their brains’ fit.  Harvard Health Publishing reports on research with mice and humans that show “brainy activities stimulate new connections between nerve cells and may even help the brain generate new cells, developing neurological ‘plasticity’ and building up a functional reserve that provides a hedge against future cell loss.”

Mentally stimulating activities such as trivia and memory games, puzzles, crosswords, board and card games can help maintain brain function.  Even if you don’t have a partner to play with, many of these types of games can be found on a computer or tablet.   Reading, taking courses, drawing, painting and experimenting with things that require manual dexterity are stimulating mental gymnastics.  Other great brain boosters include learning or engaging in creative activities like playing an instrument or dancing.

Board games, such as chess and checkers, require counting, strategy and decision-making. Memory games, scrabble and crosswords can help to improve recall and reduce those times when you cannot get the right word out.  Another added benefit to playing games with others is companionship.

Experts say physical activity is also necessary for good brain health as it increases the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the region of the brain responsible for thought.  It encourages the development of “new nerve cells and increases the connections between brain cells (synapses).”   Another positive side effect of exercise is it also improves your heart health by lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, improving blood sugar balance and reducing mental stress.  Brain health is also improved with good nutrition.   Diets rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, unsaturated oils (olive oil) and plant sources of proteins may help to prevent cognitive impairment and dementia.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ may be your answer.  Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, nutritious meals, pool, fitness centers, library, life enrichment rooms, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides holistic care to those with memory impairment. Wondering if a Senior Community is Right for You?

February 06, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

As more and more seniors watch friends and relatives move into retirement communities, many wonder if it is the right step for them. While obviously a decision of this magnitude should be carefully made, there is data showing the majority of seniors in retirement communities are happy they made the move. In fact, studies further indicate seniors in such communities tend to live longer. One report from the United States General Accounting Office (GAO), states “seniors who choose to live in retirement communities live 1.5 to 2 years longer than seniors who choose to retire in their homes.”

Researchers explain that many communities offer seniors a higher quality of life with their wide range of activities including physical fitness classes, group games and other entertainment opportunities. Also, we all know maintaining a home can be stressful and even more so as we age, while retirement communities provide a virtually carefree lifestyle.

Senior communities seamlessly provide the chance to interact and socialize with like-minded people in the same stage of life, making it easy to meet and connect with people who share your interests. Again, studies find “seniors are 22% more likely to live longer and lead more fulfilling lives if they're given the chance to socialize with others.” Moreover, researchers say active seniors have better immune systems and a lower risk of dementia; and that loneliness can lead to a greater risk of high blood pressure, depression and early mortality.

At MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge, we offer independent living and assisted living with all the comforts of home and graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, bistro bar, fitness centers, saline swimming pool, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. The Importance of Advance Care Planning Documents

January 11, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

An advanced directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signing away their lives, and/or don’t like thinking about being so ill they are unable to make decisions.

Advance care planning documents may include a living will, power of attorney and health care proxy. By planning ahead, they guide decisions made on your behalf if you are unable, and suffer from an incurable, irreversible illness, condition or disease determined to be terminal. Living wills specify the kind of medical treatment desired and many simply express the desire to not be given life-sustaining measures that only serve to prolong a person’s death. Specific details may regard care including the use of pain medications, antibiotics, hydration, feeding and the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or ventilators.

A health care proxy is someone designated to express your wishes for medical care and has the same rights you would in requesting or refusing treatment. A durable power of attorney document names a person to act on your behalf if you are incapacitated and gives them the power to make financial decisions.

The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover, refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ may be your answer. We offer residents comfort, security, built-in companionship, and predictable budgeting.  Our beautiful home has Casitas and suites in a selection of floor plans and a broad range of amenities and services to meet every need. Adding Protein to Breakfast

January 04, 2023 by Karla A in Senior Living

How many times have you eaten breakfast, and after an hour or two, you start to feel hungry? Many breakfast options involve foods such as cereals, breads and granola bars that are high in refined grains and sugar. To solve the problem, nutritionists say you should add protein to every meal including your breakfast.

When you eat a breakfast with protein, you feel fuller and more satisfied for a longer period of time and less apt to reach for high-calorie snacks mid-day. Registered dietician, Lisa Jones, explains an adult’s daily intake of protein should be between 10% and 35% of the calories consumed. She adds, “For example, if your nutritional needs call for 2,000 calories daily, you should get 200 to 700 calories from protein, or 50 to 175 grams.”

One suggestion for an easy-to-do, protein-rich breakfast is avocado and fried egg on a bagel or enriched whole-grain slice of toast. Omelets are also fairly easy and can be assembled with a variety of fillings such as mushrooms, spinach and bacon. You can increase the protein in a bowl of oatmeal by adding a scoop of protein powder and topping it with almond milk and berries. Try other creative options such as smoked salmon on a toasted whole wheat English muffin spread with cream cheese, or a Greek yogurt parfait layered with granola, nuts, and fruit. Another incentive for eating protein in the morning is nutritionists say it can help you lose weight as you feel more satisfied for a longer period of time.

Why Specialized Memory Care Neighborhoods are Beneficial in Senior Living

December 19, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

Discovering that your parent or loved one may have Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia can be extremely overwhelming. There are so many questions to consider, and you may not even be aware of the options available for memory care. One of the initial questions you might encounter is whether or not you should consider a memory care community. If you are looking for memory care, Arvada co is home to MorningStar Senior Living that specializes in holistic memory care for seniors in Colorado.

Most Senior Living communities offer three levels of care; independent living, assisted living, and memory care all within one community. The memory care neighborhood is usually a smaller subset within the larger senior living community. Staff  in memory care neighborhoods are typically trained and specialized in memory care treatment to care for people with different types of dementia or Alzheimer’s. To deliver MorningStar’s exceptional care, all team members complete thorough training including our signature program, Lavender Sky, which guides our philosophy in exceptional memory care.

How to Better Communicate with a Loved One with Dementia

November 16, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

If your loved one has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, in addition to memory problems, they may have trouble completing familiar tasks like paying bills or doing laundry, misplacing things, being unable to retrace their steps, and experience changes in mood, or personality. All these changes make it more difficult to experience the same level of communication you once did with your loved one. Memory care specialists know that communicating with a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia requires patience and understanding. MorningStar of Arvada offers the most holistic memory care Arvada Co has seen that encourages safe and effective communication with seniors dealing with dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Caring for your loved one that is struggling with memory loss can be difficult and overwhelming at times. If you are in need of compassionate and trusted memory care, MorningStar of Arvada Colorado is here to walk at your side through this journey. MorningStar senior living offers these memory care tips that can help both you and your loved one understand and communicate more effectively with each other.

Don’t exclude your loved one from conversations about their disease or treatment. It’s important at MorningStar that seniors have an active role in their memory care regime. Alzheimer’s disease and dementia affects everyone differently and no two memory care plans are the same. Speak directly to your loved one with dementia and ask what they are comfortable doing or what they feel they may need help with. In the earlier stages of memory loss, your loved one will still be able to participate in meaningful conversations about their quality of life and want to feel respected and independent.

Your love and support are important to seniors with dementia in memory care communities. The diagnosis of memory loss is difficult for everyone involved, but don’t abandon your loved one as this could lead to peak emotions of isolation, depression, and neglect. It’s okay if you don’t always know what to say. Sometimes just being present and listening is enough. MorningStar’s senior living communities in Colorado offer memory care that encourages visitation and community for seniors struggling with dementia.

Senior Living Communities Offer a Healthy, Engaged Lifestyle

October 10, 2022 by Karla A in Senior Living

The U.S. Census Bureau reports almost 13.8 million seniors live alone. We know various causes including chronic and worsening health conditions, hearing loss, no longer driving, mobility issues, loss of a spouse or other loved ones can result in loneliness and isolation for older adults on their own.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says, “Social isolation and loneliness in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States and puts them at risk for dementia and other serious medical conditions.” They cite statistics showing social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death, and rivals those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. Moreover, studies find social isolation is associated with approximately a 50% increased risk of dementia, a 29% increased risk of heart disease and a 32% increased risk of stroke. The CDC also warns loneliness is linked to higher risk of depression, suicide and anxiety.

Independent and assisted living communities offer older adults a built-in community of people at a similar stage of life as well as a variety of social activities that appeal to many tastes and preferences. The range of amenities and activities make it easy for residents to interact with others and to forge new friendships.  Buildings that are designed to accommodate the needs of seniors is another advantage of many senior communities. This includes apartments with wheelchair accessible doorways, low thresholds, well-lit spaces, handrails, walk-in showers and tubs in bathrooms, and emergency call systems.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we provide all the comforts of home with stylish casitas and suites along with graciously appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include all-day restaurant-style dining, bistro bar, theater salon, pool, and fitness centers as well as wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle.
