January 05, 2024 by Karla A in Memory care

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge community offers memory care suites for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our care services are extensive, and we provide a wide range of amenities, wellness programs and activities.

MorningStar’s memory care revolves around comforting and caring for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. We start with a physical space designed to enhance residents’ quality of life with safe, inviting common areas encouraging independence. Residents stay active with a gentle flow of activities including art, dance, physical exercise, special events, and scheduled outings.

Once a resident joins our MorningStar family, we meet with them and their family to get to know as much as we can about them including their history, vocation, talents, and preferences. From there we create a daily routine designed to stimulate or calm as a situation requires. Residents are also treated to tempting meals consisting of specially prepared foods and family-style dining for a stress-free, companionable dining experience.

As dementia care specialists, our approach and philosophy to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our program provides us with an insightful and intentional way to support the memory-impaired and their families.  All team members, regardless of their position, receive Lavender Sky training, which includes a deeper understanding of the disease and communication techniques to use with memory-impaired residents.  It also includes training in environmental safety and security as well as holistic solutions to challenging behaviors.  Additionally, our devoted team feels privileged to serve, and understands every person deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

Guide to Preventing Isolation in Memory Care

December 25, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

One major worry families have when moving a loved one into memory care is the fear of isolation. There’s a common idea that senior living or retirement homes are dark places removed from society and daily fulfillment. That couldn’t be further from the truth with the modern senior living options we have today.

While many senior living options are lively, safe and engaging, there are still steps to be taken to ensure seniors in memory care are also experiencing life to the same extent. At MorningStar Senior Living in Oregon, we understand the fears that come with a memory loss diagnosis. Our staff works tirelessly to remain up-to-date on the proper care methods while our life-enrichments teams plan exciting events and activities weekly. Below is a snapshot of a guide for preventing isolation in memory care at MorningStar Senior Living.

Memory Care Prioritizes Social Interaction

With Alzheimer’s or dementia, communication changes, or stops altogether. While it is difficult to communicate in the same way you once did, it is important to continue to prioritize social interaction for your loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

  • Holistic Memory Care Therapies

Animal therapy, music therapy or art therapy are 3 of the most popular group activities that promote socialization in seniors with memory loss. These activities do not require a senior with Alzheimer’s or dementia to verbally communicate but still give them the social interaction they crave.

  • Pay Attention to Non-Verbal Communication

Non-verbal communication is still communication. Pay close attention to body language, eye movements and even noises when trying to communicate with your loved one. Over time, you can start to learn what reactions are positive or negative.

  • Respect Boundaries

Seniors who struggle with dementia still require independence and respect. Understand when your loved one is having a negative response to an activity or event and respect their boundaries by ceasing the action or finding an alternative. This will help them to feel more understood and less alone.

Respite Memory Care for Family Members

December 22, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

If you are the primary caregiver to a senior struggling with a memory loss diagnosis, we understand the huge responsibility you take on daily to ensure your loved one is happy, safe and healthy. However, memory care facilities understand the unexpected turns life takes. If you have a vacation, work trip, surgery or just need some time to recharge, respite memory care offers families a safe senior care alternative when life calls you.

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a short-term stay of 30 days or less in a fully staffed and furnished senior living community. Respite stays are ideal for seniors recovering from surgery or who need supervision while their primary caretaker is unavailable.

Respite memory care at MorningStar Senior Living offers the quiet quarters and attendance you need to fully recover. We also offer chances for companionship and community that is just as much a part of healing and will help to make your short stay feel welcoming.

Respite Care Benefits

The benefits of respite care, while short, can be extremely beneficial for many families and seniors.

  • Preventing caregiver burnout

Caring for a senior with Alzheimer’s or dementia is a full-time job and dedication. Providing that care for years without a break can easily leave caregivers and families feeling burnt out.

  • Variety in daily activities

At home, it can be difficult to fully engage your loved one if they have dementia or Alzheimer’s. Dedicated memory care facilities have access to activities, therapies and events that are not usually available in homes.

  • Consistent high-quality care

The fear of your loved one not being cared for properly is one anxiety that keeps caregivers from traveling away from the home. With so much uncertainty, it’s good to know trusted memory care facilities offer consistent high-quality care, even for short periods.

Memory Care Arvada: Find Holistic Memory Care

December 13, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

There is currently no cure for dementia or Alzheimer’s. While memory loss is very discouraging for many families, it doesn’t mean that your loved one will lose any enjoyment from life. Things may change, but the change doesn’t have to be negative. Leading senior living centers that specialize in memory care are beginning to redefine what memory care looks like and you might be pleasantly surprised with their success.

MorningStar Memory Care Arvada Co is a uniquely designed assisted living community that offers dementia-focused care through a holistic approach called, “Lavender Sky.”

“Lavender Sky,” is the exploration of a memory loss diagnosis. Embracing Alzheimer’s or dementia, instead of being fearful of it, allows caretakers to expand their knowledge and understanding to better care for residents with a memory loss diagnosis. Under a “Lavender Sky,” we vow to be a leading community for memory care and dementia care. In doing so, we connect more with our residents and provide better, personalized care in an extraordinary way.

Holistic memory care means using comprehensive care methods to thoughtfully “enter, embrace, and explore” the world of dementia.  This means we take personality, wants, fears, diet, passions, and healthcare history into account when preparing to care for your loved one. Regardless of the extent of the memory loss, our job is to connect with and nurture our residents as we put our energies toward finding ways to celebrate and elevate life.

As a leading memory care facility dedicated to dementia care, we understand that treating the unique person is more beneficial than treating the illness. Everyone handles their diagnosis differently and each resident requires a different level of care or supervision, but we are dedicated to providing the best holistic memory care Arvada, Colorado has to offer.

Popular and Engaging Activities in Memory Care

December 11, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia can still feel bored and unfulfilled, even in the most equipped nursing homes. If you struggle to understand the wants and needs of your loved one struggling with memory loss, finding the best memory care near you may provide much-needed support.

Successful memory care communities utilize popular and engaging activities to promote cognitive function for seniors in memory care that keep them socially active and fulfilled. These activities do not need to be complicated, or expensive. Often, whenever family or friends visit, they enjoy participating in these memory care activities, too.

If a loved one has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, you will want the most trusted memory care Arvada offers. MorningStar of Arvada’s distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides experienced, holistic memory care designed around the individualized needs of each resident.

Creative, therapeutic activities are one of the most popular memory care activities for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Music therapy, art therapy, and animal therapy encourage memory care residents to be social and experience a relaxing environment. Music therapy is often utilized to promote a sense of calm and can even help seniors recall memories and feelings they may not have had access to since their diagnosis.

Watching performances of any kind incites excitement for seniors experiencing a memory loss diagnosis. If your loved one enjoyed theatre, reading, watching movies, or going to sports games before experiencing Alzheimer’s, participating in similar activities can still be beneficial for them.

Interactive games like chess or puzzles keep our brains active. This is especially true for a senior with Alzheimer’s or dementia. At MorningStar, we incorporate many interactive games and activities into our community. Both seniors and their families have fun completing a puzzle or round of chess.

Why Individualized Memory Care is So Popular

November 27, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The news of a memory loss diagnosis can lead seniors and their families onto a winding and uncertain road that often feels misguided. Individualized and holistic memory care for seniors is specific to their unique needs, goals, and current health status. Holistic senior living is inclusive memory care that focuses on the individual, not the illness.

MorningStar is a senior living facility that offers specialized memory care for seniors in Arvada, Colorado. At MorningStar of Arvada, we understand a diagnosis of dementia is devastating and we want to reassure our families we are here to help shoulder some of the burden. Keep reading to understand how individualized memory care has become so popular.

When a family makes the decision to entrust our memory care community with their loved one, we meet with them to learn as much as we can about the individual’s background, talents, interests, and personal preferences as possible.

Once they become part of the community, all memory care residents participate in a range of purposeful and meaningful activities that engage their passion, interest, and creativity collectively to encourage collaboration and socialization. These activities are individualized to the personal needs and preferences of every senior. Unlike traditional nursing homes, memory care provides seniors with a sense of understanding and support.

As dementia care experts, our unique philosophy and approach to memory care are encompassed under the possibilities MorningStar calls “Lavender Sky.” This holistic and individualized memory care method compassionately requires caregivers to choose to thoughtfully enter, embrace, and explore a memory loss diagnosis. By leveraging the power of music, dance, art, aromatherapy, and animals, we comfort and heal, and have proudly created a community that feels like a true home.

Why Music is Popular for Memory Care Residents

November 24, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Music therapy has been proven very beneficial for seniors in memory care communities. Evidence suggests that music is deeply rooted in our unconscious brains. This makes music, and music therapy, a valuable memory care tool that relieves some of the effects of dementia and other types of cognitive memory loss in the brain

Setting aside a few hours to play music that seniors would have enjoyed in their youth is beneficial in bringing old memories to the surface. Incorporating music therapy benefits seniors in memory care communities in the following ways:

Improving Cognitive Function

Harvard concluded that music can activate almost all brain regions and networks. Music therapy for seniors improves cognitive function by keeping a myriad of brain pathways and networks strong. Music can reinvigorate networks that are involved in well-being, learning, cognitive function, and happiness.

Unlocking Memories

Many people have experienced the phenomenon of hearing a song and remembering old memories out of the blue. This isn’t magic. It turns out that music can help humans unlock memories and experiences they thought they had forgotten. For seniors struggling with dementia, memory care facilities like Morningstar use music therapy to promote memory recognition and bring a sense of calm to seniors.

Alleviating Anxiety and Stress

At morningStar, you can find holistic senior living that is focused on alleviating stress and anxiety. Music therapy is one way assisted living can improve the lives of seniors with dementia. Playing relaxing music like Jazz puts us in a relaxing state that allows us to enjoy the moment and the people around us. Classical music sends vibrations through our bodies that bring down heightened emotions and fears.

Understanding Holistic Memory Care

October 25, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Unfortunately, there is still no cure for dementia or Alzheimer’s. This is why a memory loss diagnosis is so disheartening for families and patients. While some medications state to offer resolutions to some memory loss symptoms, the truth is that Alzheimer’s is not easily solved. However, there has been great success for senior living communities that utilize holistic memory care techniques in their care plans.

Understanding holistic memory care is the first step to giving your loved one struggling with Alzheimer’s or dementia the empathetic care they deserve. By utilizing different therapies, activities, foods, and social engagement, memory care teams promote holistic well-being for seniors impacted by memory loss.

What is Holistic Memory Care?

Trusted memory care communities, like MorningStar Senior Living in Beaverton, utilize holistic memory care methods to care for memory care patients.

Holistic memory care focuses on providing individualized and specialized care to each resident. Personalized care plans are highly personal and can be changed as time goes on. These plans are based on each resident’s interests, abilities, and desires.

Understanding each resident is crucial in memory care. Holistic memory care treatments encourage social and mental activities that combat negative memory loss symptoms. While medication is utilized and managed, holistic therapies can sometimes combat the need for medication altogether.

Memory Care Tips for Weather Change

October 23, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

With colder weather approaching, seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or Dementia in memory care communities may experience issues related to their diagnosis when the weather changes. Increased social isolation and loneliness is a major concern for families with a loved one who has Dementia. In colder temperatures, similar to extreme heat, family members and friends may slow their visitations.

Seniors with dementia may also have difficulty preparing themselves for the change in temperature. If they venture out of their home alone during winter, they may forget to wear proper clothing to protect themselves against the cold, ice, and snow. Memory Care communities, like MorningStar Senior Living, offer the safest memory care Arvada co has to offer, ensuring that seniors with dementia are kept healthy and happy.

Plan Trips During Winter Vacations

For families with children, it may be difficult to visit relatives struggling with memory loss in their memory care community. While these are active and engaging memory care communities, seniors still want to see family and familiar faces.

Planning trips to visit these loved ones during the children’s winter holiday ensures that seniors experience excitement when the weather changes. Because of cold temperatures, individuals in memory care may be limited to staying indoors. Bringing the family to visit during these times is a great remedy for feelings of social isolation and loneliness.

Indoor Activities

As stated above, memory care residents are often sequestered indoors during the winter to avoid falls and frostbite. When outdoor activities are limited, bringing festive activities indoors keeps seniors active and social while limiting any shock from changing temperatures. Preparing exciting activities during winter months keeps seniors in memory care excited. Memory Care communities, like MorningStar Senior Living, work hard to offer the most engaging memory care Arvada co has to offer, ensuring that seniors with dementia are kept healthy and happy during changes in weather.

The Benefits of Walking for Exercise

October 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The former director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Thomas Frieden, is quoted as saying that walking is “the closest thing we have to a wonder drug.” Many in the medical profession agree. While it is universally acknowledged that any exercise is beneficial to our overall health, walking offers some unexpected advantages.

A study from a group of Harvard scientists concluded that walking seems to counteract the effects of weight-promoting genes. The project involved looking at “32 obesity-promoting genes in over 12,000 people to determine how much the genes actually contribute to body weight.” Within the group of participants who walked briskly for an hour a day, researchers found the effects of the weight-promoting genes were cut in half.

Another surprising result of walking is it was shown to actually diminish a person’s sweet tooth. In a study out of the University of Exeter, researchers found walking appears to curb cravings for chocolate and other sugary treats. Their study showed even 15 minutes of walking a day could reduce the habit of eating sweets when stressed.

While doctors recognize any physical exercise is beneficial to reducing the risk of breast cancer, an American Cancer Society study found women who walked seven or more hours a week “had a 14% lower risk of breast cancer than those who walked three hours or fewer per week.” Researchers say walking helped decrease a woman’s risk for breast cancer even when she had an increased risk due to obesity or supplemental hormones. Other studies show walking helps to reduce joint pain and lubricates and strengthens muscles as well as boost the immune system.

Tips for Communicating With Those Suffering From Dementia

October 18, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association has some effective tips for communicating with a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia.  As the ability to find the right words or to speak at all is one of the effects of the devastating disease, it is helpful to learn some tips to make the communication process easier.

Typically, in the early stages of the disease, individuals repeat themselves often and can easily lose their train of thought.  They may start to avoid speaking and have trouble following a conversation, and may even use gestures rather than words.  Experts suggest at this stage that you make sure to address the person directly, don’t speak through a caregiver, and allow them plenty of time to answer you back.

The middle stages of the disease can signal lots of changes and usually lasts the longest.  If you wish to speak with the individual, make sure to do it in a quiet space without any distractions.  Your questions should be short and only require a simple yes or no answer, and again, look directly at the person.  In addition, you can demonstrate the task or give clear, step-by-step instructions.  Also, use a soft voice and calm demeanor, and above all else, be patient and loving.

In the late stages of the disease, which can last from a few weeks to several years, the Alzheimer’s Association suggests using nonverbal forms of communication.  When entering the person’s presence, always identify yourself and use the sound of your voice to convey the meaning of your words.  Experts recommend using touch, sight, sound, smell and taste to communicate, and as always, treat the individual with respect and dignity.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge provides specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our community is tailored to serve the needs of our special residents from purposeful activities to nutritional, easy-to-eat foods.  Please visit our website for more information about loving memory care in Peoria, AZ.

Food and Dementia: How To Handle Changes in Eating Habits

September 25, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

A senior diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s may experience changes in food preferences and typical eating habits. More serious concerns can arise around eating too, such as forgetting to eat all together or refusing to chew and swallow.

Eating can become difficult for an individual with dementia. In memory care, a senior receives individualized and specialized care plans that account for changes in eating behaviors. With 24/7 on-site care, trusted memory care professionals, and dementia-friendly programs and activities, you will find the most trusted memory care Arvada offers at MorningStar Senior Living.

Loss of Appetite

A senior with Dementia may often tell you they are full when they haven’t eaten for hours. Because of their diagnosis, their body is not telling them they’re hungry. This is extremely dangerous for seniors who live alone. For seniors who struggle with eating regular meals, finding the most reliable assisted living Arvada offers is crucial.

Textures may also impact a seniors appetite. Bananas, avocados, mushrooms, and other thick, slimy textures may no longer be appealing to a senior struggling with dementia. Not only this, but a senior may despise foods they thoroughly enjoyed. If they were huge fans of steak prior to their diagnosis, they may no longer be able to tolerate the texture. With trial and error, you can find foods they enjoy again.

Encourage Small Meals

Seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s in memory care may no longer be able to eat three large meals a day like they used to. Breaking large meals into multiple snacks throughout the day is the best way to make sure seniors in memory care are eating regularly. For breakfast, offer something small that they typically enjoy. Then, continue to offer options to them throughout the day, while monitoring how much is eaten.

Preventing Falls

September 04, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

When an older adult trips and falls, it can be life changing. Consequences include serious head injuries, hip fractures and broken bones, and in the worst cases, fatalities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year. Furthermore, more problems can arise as many seniors need several months to recover, which can cause a decline in strength and mobility as well as mental agility.  It can also lead to the loss of independence and isolation.

Statistics show most falls happen for a handful of reasons and being forewarned may help prevent one. The environment, especially the person’s home and surrounding outdoor area is one of the biggest culprits. Danger spots include slippery bathtubs, high mattresses, steep stairs, poorly lit hallways, loose rugs, obstacles in walkways and clutter. Experts say a little bit of time spent addressing these problems with things like non-slip bath mats and grab bars, more lighting, removing clutter, etc. can help prevent a fall.

Another risk factor for a fall is chronic health conditions that affect balance and mobility. Arthritis, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure can mean a person might experience dizziness or be unable to control muscles to stop a fall.

Growing older also puts us at risk for diseases like glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, which in turn, leads to more accidents. Solutions include having yearly eye exams and making sure your eyeglass prescription is up to date.

Experts say it is important for seniors to stay as fit as possible as aging affects muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. Check with your doctor for information on balance and strength exercises. If a medication is making you dizzy or drowsy, talk to your doctor about it. There may be another drug just as effective and doesn’t have the same side effects.

Transitioning to Memory Care

August 28, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Memory Care offers beneficial support for seniors struggling with memory loss. In a memory care community, you can find active social opportunities, cognitive engagement, and overall enhanced well-being and happiness. These communities hire highly trained professionals adept at handling the obstacles that come with memory loss needs. While the benefits of memory care are high, discussing transitioning to memory care with your senior parent or loved one can be difficult. At MorningStar Senior Living, we offer support for families in need of successful memory care in Arvada, Colorado.

Discussing the transition to memory care with your loved one is better when you have others on your side. Other family members or friends can offer their support in finding the proper memory care options. Once research has been completed, you and your trusted team can discuss the options with your loved one in need of supportive memory care.

Trust your instincts. If you are a close caregiver and/or provider for a loved one that you believe is struggling with memory loss, keep a log of accidents or wearisome behaviors. Has the home remained clean? Are they preparing meals for themselves with fresh ingredients? Are they struggling with remembering important information, dates, and appointments? Bring your findings to others to discuss a better care plan for your loved one while expressing your feelings about your loved one’s well-being.

Have open and honest communication with your loved one about their changing needs. Be careful to not infantilize your loved one struggling with memory loss. Like you, they want to have autonomy and choice about their future. After stating your worries, allow them to chime in on their options. Perhaps they will want to tour the facilities, scope out a roommate, or be involved in the process of selling their home. Ultimately, express your worries about their health and know that memory care facilities, like MorningStar Senior Living, bring the most modern memory care Colorado has to offer.

Three Top Holistic Therapies for Seniors in Memory Care

August 23, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

When an elderly parent or loved one receives a memory loss diagnosis with symptoms that seem to be getting worse, it may be time for you to consider the memory services available in Arvada, Colorado, and whether or not you should move your parents to a memory care facility. Memory care assisted living at MorningStar Senior Living provides long-term care facilities specializing in memory services and holistic therapy for seniors in memory care. The following are the most popular memory care activities for seniors struggling with memory loss.

Music Therapy

Music is a huge part of our culture. Evidence suggests that music is deeply rooted in our conscious and unconscious brains. This makes music, and music therapy, a valuable memory care tool that relieves some of the effects of dementia and other types of cognitive memory loss in the brain. Setting aside a few hours to play music that seniors would have enjoyed in their youth is beneficial in bringing old memories to the surface.

Art Therapy

Art therapy for seniors in memory care cultivates emotional resilience, enhances social skills, and improves cognitive and sensory-motor functions. These abilities usually diminish as memory loss and dementia progresses. Art therapy is a great way to combat these symptoms of memory loss in seniors. At MorningStar memory care Arvada Co, our community offers a mix of art therapy and other creative activities that stimulate the mind, body, and spirit through a holistic approach.

Reminiscence Therapy

Reminiscence therapy is a top holistic therapy for seniors in memory care because it incorporates the five senses and reawakens memories associated with those feelings. Showing your loved one with dementia old photos, having them touch familiar fabrics, or cooking them a meal that they loved are all examples of reminiscence therapy.

As specialists in memory care, MorningStar’s Senior Living in Arvada, Co is aware of the mental pain and frustration that is associated with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases. Regardless of the barrier within your loved ones’ memory loss, we continue empathetic communication with our residents struggling with memory loss and do not shy away from difficulties. Incorporating holistic methods of care and treatment enhances the overall health and happiness of seniors in memory care.

Keeping Alzheimer’s Patients Engaged in Activities

August 16, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Researchers say despite declining cognitive abilities, studies show those with Alzheimer’s disease do better when encouraged to participate in meaningful activities as it gives them a sense of purpose and self-worth. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports, “engaging older persons with dementia in appropriate activities has been shown to yield beneficial effects such as increasing positive emotions, improving activities of daily living (ADL) and improving the quality of life.” One study’s author explains the act of staying engaged can help dementia patients maintain quality of life even in advanced stages of the disease.

Just as it is important for older people to stay engaged and active, it is also important for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia to be involved in healthy daily activities. Dementia care specialists say structure and routine helps individuals “maintain their cognitive function, sense of security, and can calm anxious or aggressive behaviors.” Especially in the early stages of the disease, these types of activities give a person a sense of control over their day. Toward the latter stages of the disease, purposeful activities can be one of the few remaining ways to engage in memories and communicate.

Studies show the creative arts are an effective way to stimulate the five senses. Singing has been shown to not only be enjoyable to those with dementia, but often is one of the last abilities they lose. A person may remember the words to a song long after other memories disappear. Dancing to or listening to popular music from their youth is another activity shown to stimulate the person’s senses and increase self-awareness, while reducing anxiety and depression. Painting or drawing can do the same for others. Experts say don’t forget the value of exercise. A short walk outside can lift spirits but make sure the person is steady on their feet as Alzheimer’s can affect gait and balance.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge provides holistic memory care individualized for each resident and designed to stimulate or calm in response to a particular mood or situation.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, aromatherapy, or animals to heal and comfort residents.  Please visit our website to learn more about compassionate, loving memory care in Peoria, AZ.
