Exciting New Memory Care Activities that Encourage Stimulation

May 22, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Memory care facilities are continually exploring innovative, holistic, and engaging activities to enhance the well-being and quality of life of seniors with memory impairments. These exciting new memory care activities aim to improve cognitive function, stimulate memories, promote social interaction, and enhance the overall well-being of seniors in memory care facilities. When selecting a memory care facility for your loved one, consider an assisted living community like MorningStar of Beaverton that incorporates these innovative programs in their memory care communities to create a fulfilling and enriching experience for seniors struggling with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Reminiscence therapy is a memory care therapy that provides a platform for seniors to share their life stories with others to encourage stimulation of the memory centers of the brain. Reminiscence therapy encourages discussions about seniors’ past experiences, regardless of how much or how little they remember. This memory care therapy can include activities such as creating memory boxes with meaningful items, looking at photo albums, or engaging in guided conversations about personal histories. Reminiscence therapy fosters a sense of identity, promotes social interaction, and provides cognitive stimulation.

Art therapy offers a creative outlet for self-expression and emotional well-being. Activities like painting, drawing, pottery, or collage-making allow seniors to engage in artistic endeavors and communicate their thoughts and feelings. Art therapy can be adapted to accommodate various skill levels and abilities, providing a meaningful and therapeutic experience. Music and dance therapy for memory care also has a powerful impact on individuals with memory impairments. These therapies tap into the emotional and cognitive connections associated with familiar songs and rhythmic movements. Sing-alongs, musical instrument play, and dance sessions can evoke positive memories, improve mood, and stimulate cognitive function.

Families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are receiving the very best modern and holistic memory care practices for memory care in Beaverton. Offering a range of activities and programs, our assisted living is designed to promote social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and physical exercise. These activities not only enhance residents' quality of life, but they can also help slow the progression of dementia.

You Should Track These Dementia Symptoms in Seniors

May 19, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

It’s essential to be vigilant for signs of early dementia in seniors. Early intervention can significantly impact a senior’s quality of life. At MorningStar at Beaverton in Oregon, we understand families' challenges when their loved ones are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. If you are concerned that your parent or loved one may be in need of memory care, be mindful of these symptoms of dementia in seniors. MorningStar’s memory care communities utilize the latest technology and research in memory care to create an engaging and stimulating environment and lifestyle for residents.

One of the most common early signs of dementia is forgetfulness. Seniors may have difficulty remembering important dates, recent events, conversations, or appointments. They may frequently misplace items such as their car keys or telephone or struggle to recall semi-familiar names or faces. As a caregiver or adult child to a senior, tracking these instances of memory loss can help identify memory loss patterns and provide valuable information to healthcare professionals for accurate diagnosis and personalized care planning.

While we all have our forgetful moments that increase with age, another early symptom of dementia is difficulty with communication or a change in normal behavior surrounding communication. If you are having a conversation with a senior that you talk with regularly and are finding that they are struggling more and more to find the right words or are having difficulty following or participating in conversations, this could be a sign of early dementia. Tracking these changes in communication patterns can assist in identifying the progression of dementia and facilitating appropriate interventions, including speech therapy and communication techniques.

Learn the Importance of B12 in Senior Brain Health

May 19, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in maintaining proper brain function and cognitive health. This is why it is important to make sure seniors in memory care are receiving adequate nutrition that encourages proper B12 consumption. A B12 deficiency is a common concern among seniors, especially those with memory care needs. This is why MorningStar Senior Living offers the best dining experience for seniors in memory care in Arvada, Co with executive chefs that use brainwise foods and fresh ingredients year-round.

Seniors are more susceptible to B12 deficiency due to age-related changes in the body's ability to absorb and utilize this vitamin. Factors such as reduced stomach acid production, gastrointestinal disorders, or certain medications can further compromise B12 absorption, putting seniors at a higher risk. This vitamin plays a key role in the production of myelin, a substance that protects nerve cells and facilitates efficient communication within the brain. Insufficient B12 levels can lead to impaired nerve function, affecting memory, attention, and overall cognitive performance.

Seniors with memory care needs should undergo a comprehensive nutritional assessment to identify any deficiencies, including B12. This assessment can help determine if dietary changes or supplementation is necessary to meet the individual's nutritional requirements. At MorningStar, our executive chefs encourage a diet rich in foods containing vitamin B12, such as lean meats, fish, dairy products, eggs, and fortified cereals. For individuals with dietary restrictions or limitations, alternative sources of B12, such as supplements or B12 injections, may be recommended.

Our trained Executive Chefs design seasonal menus that feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible (sometimes from our own resident gardens). These ingredients help to build our BrainWise program. BrainWise is as much a lifestyle as it is a program at MorningStar by which we prioritize the use of ingredients known to support brain health by their high concentrations of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory compounds. The charge of MorningStar’s culinary team is not just to create flavors to delight the eye and palate but to leverage the phenomenal benefits of these aptly named “SuperFoods,” items like acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and dark greens.

Try These Different Modes of Communication for Memory Care

April 19, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Using different modes of communication is a critical aspect of providing effective care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. By tailoring communication to each resident's individual needs and abilities, caregivers can help to reduce frustration, anxiety, and isolation, while fostering a sense of connection and community. Memory care communities, like MorningStar Memory Care in Beaverton, offer specialized care for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia. In addition to providing personalized care and support, MorningStar also emphasizes the importance of using different modes of communication to enhance the quality of life for seniors in memory care.

One of the primary reasons why using different modes of communication is important for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia is because these conditions can impact a person's ability to communicate effectively through speech alone. Seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia may have trouble remembering words, may struggle to express themselves, or may experience confusion or disorientation. This can make it difficult for them to communicate their needs or feelings, which can lead to frustration, anxiety, or isolation.

Visual aids, gestures, and touch help to support seniors in memory care by making communication more seamless. For example, using picture books or other visual aids can help seniors to identify and express their needs, even if they are struggling to remember specific words. Using touch, such as holding a resident's hand or giving them a gentle hug, can also help to convey warmth and support, even if verbal communication is limited.

Another important benefit of using different modes of communication is that it can help to reduce feelings of isolation or loneliness among seniors in memory care. Memory care communities can be disorienting or overwhelming for seniors with Alzheimer's or Dementia, which can make them feel disconnected from the world around them. By using different modes of communication, caregivers can help to create a sense of connection and community, even if verbal communication is challenging.

Families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are receiving the very best modern and holistic memory care practices for memory care in Beaverton. MorningStar utilizes the latest technology and research in memory care to create an engaging and stimulating environment and lifestyle for residents. Offering a range of activities and programs, our assisted living is designed to promote social engagement, cognitive stimulation, and physical exercise. These activities not only enhance residents' quality of life, but they can also help slow the progression of dementia.

Research Shows Pets are Beneficial to Seniors

April 10, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Research has shown pets are beneficial to seniors. A Place for Mom’s website reports on one study, which found “15 minutes spent bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone cortisol and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop.” Researchers explain interactions between human and pets can lower cholesterol levels, fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke.

Pets can teach seniors to live in the here and now as they do, and dogs and cats are great at offering their owners unconditional love, emotional support and affection. In fact, animals uplift the spirits of those in hospitals, convalescent homes, mental health centers, nursing homes, and assisted living communities through pet therapy programs. Moreover, pet therapy has proven beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Experts point to the animal’s full acceptance and non-verbal communication as being soothing for patients.

It was not that long ago that seniors moving into a 55+ community had to leave behind an important companion, their pet. Today however, more and more senior living communities are recognizing the benefits of pets to the elderly, and many such as MorningStar at Golden Ridge, allow residents to bring their pets with them. We do ask that you check with us regarding our pet policy.

Please contact us with your questions regarding availability, choice of casitas or suites, pricing, care services and more. Our beautiful community offers 38 two-bedroom casitas for independent living and 65 suites for assisted living in a range of configurations to accommodate residents’ preferences and needs.   In addition, 35 secure memory care suites are devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. We look forward to hearing from you.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Hearing Loss is Common Among Seniors

April 03, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute of Health reports approximately one in three people between the ages of 65 and 74 has hearing loss and nearly half of those older than 75 have difficulty hearing. Hearing loss causes someone a range of problems including difficulty understanding and following a doctor’s advice, responding to safety warnings, and hearing doorbells, phone calls, and alarms. Another all-too common problem is it can be hard to follow conversations with family and friends, and many start avoiding situations where they may be frustrated or embarrassed.

Medical experts advise asking your primary care physician for a referral to an otolaryngologist, an audiologist or a hearing aid specialist. An otolaryngologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases of the ear, nose, and throat. They will try to determine the cause of your hearing loss and treatment options. They may refer you to an audiologist who is trained in measuring the degree of loss as well as recommend treatment, which may include fitting you for a hearing aid. There are three different types of hearing aids and it may take some trial and error to find one that works for you (most can be purchased for a trial period).

In some cases, doctors may recommend Cochlear implants, small electronic devices surgically implanted in the inner ear that help provide a sense of sound to people who are profoundly deaf or hard-of-hearing.  Other treatment options include hearing assistive devices for your phones to amplify sound; closed circuit systems for churches or theaters; and lip or speech reading classes.

For trusted independent living, assisted living, or memory care, we encourage you to consider MorningStar Senior Living at Golden Ridge.   We are conveniently located in Peoria, minutes from Glendale, and have easy access to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants, and other services. Are You Worried About the Cost of Memory Care in Arvada, Colorado?

March 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Caring for a parent or loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be challenging, time-consuming, and cause financial stress. At MorningStar in Arvada, Colorado, we understand the importance of providing high-quality memory care to our residents, and we work with families to make sure they have the resources they need to pay for care. If you are considering memory care for your parents but are unsure how to cover the costs, we encourage you to explore the payment options we offer here at MorningStar and how they can help you pay for the care for your loved one’s memory care needs.

When it comes to paying for assisted living, financial resources are available beyond retirement savings and investments. If your loved one owns a home, has veteran benefits, or has a life insurance policy, these are some of the ways in which payment for memory care can be possible outside private pay options.

The equity built up in a private home is typically a retiree’s largest asset, making the proceeds from selling extremely helpful when transitioning to a senior community. However, selling a home in a timely manner can be challenging and time-consuming. This is especially true when adult children are not living near to assist. Many families find it helpful to work with a Real Estate Professional experienced with all aspects of selling a senior’s home. From packing and cleaning to listing and selling, ElderLife’s agents are ready to assist with the entire process to simplify a senior transition. To be connected with a local agent, contact us today.

Whole life and universal life policies build a reserve of cash through interest-earning excess premiums. In some situations, life insurance can be a source of ready funds through cash surrender, death benefit loans, accelerating death benefits, life (or viatical) settlements, or even selling the policy on the open market for immediate cash. Before acting on any of these methods, consult a financial advisor, as there may be tax consequences. Life Care Funding can also help you determine whether a policy can be converted.

Contact us today if you want to know more about the built-in companionship, predictable budgeting, and memory care Arvada Co has seen. MorningStar Senior Living Retirement Homes in Arvada Colorado takes care of the worry and stress of aging, allowing you more time to do the things you love. Whether it’s fulfilling a calling, finding a new opportunity through volunteerism, or spending time with friends and loved ones and relaxing, contact us to schedule a tour of our memory care community near you.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Specialized Memory Care

March 08, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge in Peoria, AZ, we proudly offer the finest senior care with independent living, assisted living and memory care options.  As experienced specialists in caring for those with memory loss from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, our community is equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

Our loving and compassionate team considers it their calling as well as their privilege to care for your loved one.  MorningStar’s holistic approach to memory care incorporates some of the most respected research-based care programs available. Our comprehensive care also includes assisting families to better understand and cope with the disease.

When a resident joins our community, we spend time with them and their family to learn as much as we can about their life before memory loss including their talents, vocation, and preferences.  From there, we create a daily care plan based on their needs and designed to stimulate or calm in response to their mood or situation.  We know that whatever the form of dementia, a person’s essence remains and our calling is to find ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

Among our many wellness programs and activities, MorningStar is proud to partner with the Alzheimer’s Association in every market in which we serve, including MorningStar at Golden Ridge. Along with fund-raising for local chapters throughout the year, we participate in their core initiatives like The Longest Day and Walk to End Alzheimer’s.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge understands that receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia can be devastating to a family, but we want you to know we are here to help.  Please contact us to learn more about our community, our staff and the philosophy that guides our care.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Good Communication With Your Doctor

March 06, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

The National Institute on Aging wants everyone to know asking questions at medical appointments is a good thing but remember, a doctor only has so much time allocated to each patient so come prepared. Their advice includes asking for clarification whenever the doctor uses a term to describe a medical condition you are unfamiliar with. Also, be sure you understand how and when to take a new medication. For example if it should be taken with food, does that mean before, during or after a meal?

If your physician wants you to have a test done, find out why and what sort of preparation it will entail. Ask if there are any side effects or danger getting tested, and how long it will take to get the results. You may want to request a copy of the results, and if a specialist is doing the test, make sure they send the results to your physician.

Once results are in, your doctor will most likely make a diagnosis based on your symptoms, your physical exam, lab work and medical tests. Ask your doctor to describe the condition, how serious is it, if it is a long-term disease and/or curable, and what is the best course of treatment. If it includes medications, ask why you are taking it, the side effects and how long you will be on it.

If the doctor recommends surgery, ask why he/she is recommending it, the risks and benefits, and if there are alternatives to surgery. How expensive is the procedure, will you be hospitalized and how long is the recovery period? The Cleveland Clinic explains taking an active role in your medical care has many advantages and ensures you are equipped with the information you need for your utmost health and safety.

For trusted assisted living or independent living, Peoria and Glendale area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge.  We offer all the comforts of home with stylish apartments and beautifully appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides individualized memory care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. How to Better Communicate With your Parent in Memory Care

February 22, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases like dementia are difficult to navigate if you are a child of a parent struggling with these diagnoses. Getting your parents or loved one to agree to simple everyday tasks may become frustrating and overwhelming for both of you in this situation. When it comes to taking care of themselves, a senior struggling with dementia may forget when they last bathed, had a meal, or reasons why they need to do these things in the first place. MorningStar Senior Living offers the most empathetic and holistic memory care Arvada co has to offer for seniors and their families looking for trustworthy memory care focused on unique and specialized care plans to help bridge the gap of communication between you and your parents struggling with memory loss.

As an assisted living facility specializing in memory care, we know you are doing everything in your power to provide the best care in the most efficient ways possible to your loved one. Barriers in language due to dementia can sometimes make communication hard and can become very frustrating. Receiving the proper level of care can help limit communication errors and leaves more time for you to have quality time with your parents. MorningStar of Arvada’s Assisted Living and Memory Care makes sure that at least one full-time licensed nurse is available for clinical concerns 24/7 in our community to make sure that your loved one’s health needs are being met. Not only this, but we can determine the exact level of care and assistance your parents may need through an initial medical assessment and cognitive evaluation so that your loved one is receiving the precise care for them.

An assisted living facility can help maintain routines for seniors with memory loss. If your parent or loved one is dealing with memory loss symptoms, you are probably worried they are not taking their medication consistently, eating regularly, or bathing routinely. This may lead to arguments between you two. MorningStar senior living keeps every resident on a manageable routine that helps to ease discomfort and to keep your loved one happy and healthy. Medication is monitored, healthy meals are provided and supervised, and any other assistance necessary is accommodated depending on your parent’s level of need. Knowing your parent’s routine is maintained at MorningStar will help you rest and make visits that much more tender and uncomplicated.

February 20, 2023 by Karla A in Memory care

Located in Colorado’s Front Range, Arvada is only a 20-minute drive to Downtown Denver, close to many parks and green spaces, and convenient to great restaurants, shops, and the 1st Bank Center. Colorado is a great place for seniors who are looking for calming nature and fun family attractions and cooler climates. However, as we age the colder weather can start to impact our health if precautions are not taken promptly. That’s why MorningStar of Arvada offers the most comforting memory care Arvada Co has to offer for seniors looking for all inclusive memory care in Colorado.

Assisted living communities like MorningStar of Arvada are designed around the various needs of older adults and provide senior-friendly activities and companionship with like-minded adults of a similar age. As an assisted living resident in memory care, you receive the help needed to maintain your independence and get back to living life to the fullest. Our Reflections Neighborhood offers all-inclusive care for seniors in memory care with dementia and has its own common rooms and enclosed courtyard.

While it’s important for seniors to spend time outdoors and get fresh air and sunlight, it’s also important to be prepared for changing weather conditions, especially with Spring around the corner. The weather can be unpredictable sometimes, but at MorningStar of Arvada seniors and their families can rest assured that MorningStar offers the most equipped memory care that Arvada co has to offer.

Seniors have a harder time regulating their body temperatures and it becomes even more difficult for elders with dementia to feel comfortable in various temperatures. In memory care at MorningStar, our caretakers are prepared and educated in memory care to create routines that are personalized to each need of every senior in memory care. This means helping your loved one to be in the most comfortable and safe memory care environment Arvada, Co has to offer.
