Want to Get Better Organized?

April 25, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Even after full retirement or reducing your work schedule, many seniors are surprised to see how quickly their time fills up with medical and dental appointments, fitness classes, salon trips, social engagements and other must-do errands. In fact you may have wondered how you ever had the time to work at a full-time job. That being said, to help ensure you get to your important events, it helps to be organized and using a good planner can make it easy.

Expert organizers say one of the best ways to improve time management and make your life less stressful is to use a planner to write down important appointments, priorities, to-do lists and shopping lists. Whether you are most comfortable with a paper version or wish to use a calendar on your phone, you must remember to enter in the pertinent information so it can be used to correctly schedule and plan your day, week and month appropriately.

Your planner can be used for a number of other things such as a diary or to record your personal goals as well as a gratitude journal or scrapbook. If you want to use your planner as such, make sure to choose one with plenty of room on each page and/or one with extra pages. Planners range from a choice of daily, weekly and monthly layouts; and views with pages dedicated to notes and to-do lists. If you are the kind of person who prefers to use heavy inked pens or markers, you will want a planner with heavy paper to prevent bleed-through. If you want to create somewhat of a scrapbook within your planner for things like ticket stubs or current family photos, you might want a planner with pockets.

If you are a visual person, you will not have a problem finding one that appeals to your taste. Planners are available in a wide variety of colors and sizes with choices of whimsical designs, artist prints, landscapes and beautiful stationery. While some planners can be more costly, there is a large selection of budget-friendly models.

At the senior living MorningStar of Arvada, we offer seniors a care-free lifestyle with the freedom to pursue life-long interests, explore new hobbies and make new friends. Our 112 independent living and senior living suites are available in a choice of floorplans and configurations. MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers a Community of Friends

April 14, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As we age, our social circle can start to shrink. We may have lost a spouse and/or siblings as well as good friends to death or illnesses. Our adult children may have moved away. Many of us have left the workforce or are working from home or part-time. In some cases, due to failing eyesight or other medical conditions, an older adult may not feel comfortable driving, especially after dusk or in bad weather. All of this can reduce opportunities for socializing.

The DailyCaring website explains, “Loneliness has a bigger negative impact on senior health than many people realize. It can increase the risk of depression, poor nutrition, cognitive decline, and more.” They add that fortunately, there are a variety of ways to prevent loneliness in seniors including community living.

The Journals of Gerontology conducted a survey that found well-designed senior assisted living communities can maximize socialization, happiness, and quality of life while decreasing the risk for depression and dementia. Most have plenty of common areas for relaxed gathering as well as more formal programming for group games, dances, concerts, field trips and more.

The friendly social interactions typical in community living can also lead to better nutrition as residents in many senior communities have the pleasure of eating together. Furthermore, some studies suggest a steady social life can reduce blood pressure and pain symptoms.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we like to call our convenient opportunities to socialize as “built-in companionship.” Our signature wellness programs and activities are designed around the interests and needs of our residents. They focus on physical, intellectual, spiritual or social connections, which allow residents to stay engaged and productive. If you have an interest that our programs do not address; we encourage you to go ahead and start a club.

Our independent living and assisted living in Peoria, AZ includes spacious Casitas and suites in a variety of floor plans to meet the needs of the most discerning seniors. For those living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, our Reflections Neighborhood provides specialized, individualized memory care. The Causes of Shoulder Blade Pain

March 21, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The shoulder blade, referred to as the scapulae, consists of triangular bones on the back of the shoulders; and are attached to the top of the arm at the shoulder joint and the clavicle (at the acromioclavicular joint). As the area is surrounded by muscles, tendons and ligaments, doctors say determining the cause of shoulder blade pain can be difficult.

The Medical News Today website explains shoulder blade pain can be caused by a number of conditions including a heart attack. Other causes may be sleeping in an uncomfortable position, strain from lifting a heavy object, and physical trauma.

Examples of bone or joint problems are pain caused by a fall or accident that results in a fracture. Other bone and joint issues include degenerative conditions like arthritis, bursitis or frozen shoulders. One type of arthritis called ankylosing spondylitis primarily affects the spine and can cause pain and inflammation in the surrounding area including the shoulders.

Shoulder pain that arises beneath the bone that forms the “roof” of the shoulder (the acromion) is often referred to as shoulder impingement. Experts say the cause is often unknown and in about 50% of people, the pain gets better after around 6 months. Treatment includes pain medication, cooling the area and physical therapy.

Muscle and tendon problems causing shoulder pain include the rotator cuff, muscle strain and overuse of the area. The rotator cuff is a set of muscles that helps the arm and shoulder move and injuries are common including tears to one of the cuff tendons. Treatment includes taking over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or pain medications to minimize swelling and discomfort, applying ice packs and physical therapy. In some cases your doctor may recommend surgery.

Consult your healthcare provider about lingering shoulder blade pain. Also remember shoulder pain is associated with a heart attack, so anyone experiencing shoulder pains along with shortness of breath, or other signs of a heart attack, should seek immediate medical attention.

The Move to Assisted Living

March 10, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Moving can be exhausting and many of us have mixed feelings about the change – both looking forward to a new adventure and sad to leave our old life behind. Now imagine what your parents may be feeling as they leave a familiar home for an assisted living community. The change can be even more difficult if they are going into memory care.

Experts say there are things family members can do to help ease the transition and make it a more positive experience. First, involve your loved one in the decision-making process as much as possible. Discuss the various benefits of each community regarding suites, amenities, food service and the helpfulness of the staff and administrators. Also, read online reviews from other families and residents; and take advantage of in-person tours.

Once the decision is made on a particular community, now help mom or dad decide on what to bring to their new space, keeping in mind it is probably smaller than their current home. Consider an item based on its practicality, footprint, and your loved one’s feelings toward it. Be sure to include personal mementos such as family pictures and a few of their most cherished treasures he/she has collected through the years. Other furniture and items can be given to family members, sold or donated to charity.

Experts advise adult children to play an active role in helping a loved one settle into their new home and to remember it is an emotional adjustment. In-person visits help as do phone calls to let them know you are still thinking of them.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we are experienced in helping residents make a smooth transition to our community by working alongside our residents and their families to listen to concerns and help solve any problems. MorningStar’s assisted living residents enjoy stylish suites, all-day dining, wellness programs, activities and amenities including a theatre/chapel, fitness centers, salon, bistro bar and beautiful outdoor areas.

How to Prevent Brittle Bones

February 26, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The Harvard Medical School recently published an article explaining it should be on the top of a senior’s daily to-do list to protect bone health especially if you have been diagnosed with osteopenia. After the age of 60, bone loss speeds up, and experts warn if we do not do something to prevent the loss, it will continue and may result in osteoporosis.

If you are a woman who has gone through menopause or are over the age of 65, talk to your healthcare provider about getting a bone density scan. If you have risk factors for osteoporosis such as family history, low body weight, smoke or take certain medications, your doctor may recommend a test earlier.

While osteopenia is not full blown osteoporosis it is a sign a person’s bone density is decreasing and they may be at risk for osteoporosis, a condition where bones easily and repeatedly break. The disease can be so severe it can even lead to a loss of independence. Staying healthy is important as it can help slow down the progress of osteopenia to osteoporosis.

Statistics report more than 2 million bone fractures each year in the U.S. are attributed to osteoporosis but there are things we can do to prevent as well as treat the disease to keep bones strong and healthy. While there are medications to stave off the damage, they are typically reserved for those who already have osteoporosis. Treatment for low bone density such as osteopenia is treated mainly through diet and exercise.

Bones become stronger when we put force on them or pull on them with weight-bearing exercises. These include resistance training, body-weight exercises and walking at a brisk pace. Other effective things to prevent or treat bone loss are aerobics, balance and posture exercises.

Diet is another important step in preventing osteoporosis. Doctors recommend getting as much calcium as you can through foods like dairy, sardines and leafy greens. Protein is also important for seniors and protects brain health as well as builds strong bones. Other recommendations include talking to your doctor about taking a vitamin D3 supplement; and limiting alcohol consumption to not more than one drink a day.

MorningStar of Arvada senior living community offers the area’s finest independent living and assisted living. Wellness programs and activities promote healthier, more purposeful lives; and all-day, restaurant-style dining and luxury amenities give seniors the freedom to pursue life-long interests, explore new hobbies and make new friends. Mobile Issues Are the Most Frequent Cause of Disability for Older Adults

February 14, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

When we were younger most of us were lucky enough to take our mobility for granted. We didn’t have to think about whether we would be “able” to physically do a routine task. However, as we grow older, our bodies can encounter physical limitations that threaten our independence. Experts say protecting our mobility requires attention and the “use it or lose it” mantra is a fitting one. Lifestyle choices and exercise as well as diet and preventive care can help keep us stronger and steadier with fewer aches and more stamina.

The Harvard Health Publishing by Harvard Medical School defines mobility as the ability to move purposefully as you go through your day, and is the foundation for living a healthy and independent life. It requires a certain amount of physical stamina, strength, balance, coordination, and range of motion. Mobility allows seniors to do everyday things like get out of bed each morning, climb a set of stairs and bring in groceries from the car. Poor mobility causes problems such as being unable to get up out of a chair on your own or getting up from the toilet without helping hand. Good mobility helps keep seniors safe by lessening their risk of falls and subsequent injuries; and allows the person to live on their own.

The US Census Bureau reports that mobility issues are the most frequent cause of disability for people over 65 and impacts their ability to safely climb stairs and walk. While some mobility problems can’t be helped, experts say generally to maintain mobility, seniors should do exercises targeted to increase strength, balance, stamina and coordination.

Ask your doctor, physical therapist or trainer on ways to preserve and improve your freedom of movement. Moreover, if you are unsteady on your feet, check with them about using a mobility aid such as a cane or walker to improve steadiness.

For outstanding independent living and assisted living, Phoenix area seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar at Golden Ridge, a true destination for successful aging. Nearly One Million People in the US Are Living With Parkinson’s Disease

January 27, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The Parkinson’s Foundation reports that nearly one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson’s disease; and that number is expected to increase to 1.2 million by 2030. However, they say the actual number of people with PD is likely to be higher as many cases go undiagnosed.

The Mayo Clinic explains Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nerves. Currently there is no cure but medications can improve symptoms, and in some cases, surgery may also improve symptoms.

Parkinson’s symptoms typically start slowly, and one of the first things a person may notice is a slight tremor in one hand. Called resting tremors, they occur when the person’s hands are at rest, and the first tremors may only be the shaking of one finger. It is important to note that not all tremors are caused by Parkinson’s and you need to consult with your healthcare provider to see if it is Parkinson’s or something else causing the condition.

Stiffness or rigidity, and slowed movement known as bradykinesia are other common symptoms of the disease. Rigidity occurs in the shoulders, trunk, limbs and neck. Bradykinesia includes slowness in everyday movement and tasks such as walking, speech and eating. Another common sign of Parkinson’s is a change in the person’s handwriting. Small handwriting called micrographia occurs because of changes in the parts of the brain that control motor skills. As the disease progresses, people report problems with sleeping, mood swings and changes in cognitive skills as well as eye and vision issues.

The risk of Parkinson’s increases with age and most cases are diagnosed after the age of 60. Men are more likely to come down with the disease, and there is a small hereditary link. Moreover, ongoing exposure to pesticides and herbicides may increase your risk.

If you are looking for independent living, assisted living or memory care in the Phoenix area, MorningStar at Golden Ridge may be your answer.  Our residents enjoy healthy, delicious meals served all day in our full-service dining room, luxury amenities, wellness programs and built-in companionship.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Habits That Are Bad for Cognitive Health

January 20, 2025 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

A Community that Feels like Family

December 27, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As we age it becomes more and more important to have a strong network of support for the best quality of life. For many seniors; security, safety and peace of mind knowing someone is always around if they require help contributes greatly to their well-being.

Senior living communities like MorningStar of Arvada offer that and a lot more. Rather than hearing it just from us, how about reading some positive feedback from residents and their families? We are proud to report we routinely receive good reviews that include words such as: kind, caring and terrific. Residents are impressed by how the staff knows everyone’s name and mention they are very loving and ready to do whatever it takes to help.

For example one family member explains that while she is not one to write reviews, she says, “I am in awe of how well-run, clean and friendly this place is. Best assisted living I’ve seen. Happy Mom can call it home.”  Another son writes about his mother who is in our memory care. He says, “Before moving her here, I toured many homes. I refer to MorningStar as the Cadillac of retirement communities. Worth the extra cost! The staff is friendly and loving towards my mom. The facility is clean and always smells good. I highly recommend it!”

MorningStar of Arvada is additionally a place where residents speak very highly of each other. They use words like friendly, supportive and caring toward one another. They explain how they have built lasting friendships and have fun together.

Older Adults are at Greater Risk of Serious Eye Diseases

December 13, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Just as the rest of our body ages, so do our eyes. Older adults often complain of dry, teary or tired eyes and may have problems driving at night, experience flashes and floaters or need glasses to read. As we grow older, we are also at a higher risk for serious eye diseases that can impact our vision.

One of the most serious eye diseases is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The American Macular Degeneration Foundation reports AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people aged 60 and older, affecting nearly 20 million Americans. The risk of developing AMD increases with age and if you are 75 or older, your risk is 1 in 3.  Age-related macular degeneration causes the macula, a part of the back of the eye near the retina, to deteriorate. Experts say while it doesn’t impact peripheral vision, macular degeneration can affect how well a person sees what’s right in front of them.

You are at a higher risk of getting AMD if a relative has had it or you are Caucasian, and females are more susceptible to AMD than males. Lifestyle choices also increase your risk for AMD including smoking along with elevated blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Sun exposure is another risk factor and doctors recommend wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Maintaining a healthy diet by eating foods high in antioxidants like lutein found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach are beneficial for our eye health.

Symptoms of AMD include visual distortions and can make straight lines appear bent, reduce central vision in one or both eyes, increase blurriness of printed words, and the need for brighter light when reading or doing close-up work. The first signs of AMD are typically discovered by an eye doctor during an annual dilated eye exam.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, our beautiful 55+ community is designed to meet every need. Residents enjoy luxury amenities, care and hospitality services, and a range of wellness programs and activities. Being a Caregiver is Often Challenging

December 11, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Caregiver burnout is a real thing. Experts estimate 61 percent of the country’s 48 million caregivers are working outside jobs along with acting as a caregiver. In a report titled “Working While Caregiving: It’s Complicated,” from AARP and S&P Global, two-thirds of respondents said they had at least some difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities.

The survey reports 84% of respondents said caregiving had a moderate or high impact on the stress they feel daily. Another 27% of working caregivers said due to their workload “they were forced to go from full-time to part-time work or reduce their hours.” Others complained their employers seemed to be more understanding of child care leave than they were to employees who had to take time off to care for a parent or other elderly family member.

Respondents said beyond holding down a job, they were putting in at least six hours a week of caregiving for a loved one. Tasks include everything from assisting with the actual physical care of a loved one to taking the person to doctor visits, grocery shopping, and serving as an advocate for the person to ensure they are getting the proper care.

Other studies support the findings of the AARP survey as they too found participants reported difficulty in balancing work and caregiving; and the negative impact it can have on physical and mental health. In 2023, a study found almost half of all caregivers were spending between 10 to 29 hours a week caregiving. More concerning is many caregivers are neglecting their own health stating they have no time to exercise and are not keeping up with routine annual physicals and screening. In fact, 41% of caregivers report low overall well-being, which is 32% more than non-caregivers.

This is why assisted living and memory care communities can be a lifesaver for both the elderly person and the family caregiver. Not only do residents have their care needs met but they can also take advantage of all the benefits community living offers. Now when family members visit, they can just enjoy each other’s company.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we strive to be the best independent and assisted living in the Peoria area, and we take the well-being of our residents very seriously.  Our all-inclusive community offers all the amenities, services and enrichment programs to help residents live life to the fullest. For those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, we have suites devoted to individualized, compassionate memory care. Please see our website for more information.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. Are You Eating Too Much Sugar?

December 04, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Why do we crave sugary foods? An article from WebMD explains we may be prewired to like sweet things such as sugar as it is one of the things humans prefer right from birth. Sugar is a carbohydrate, as are healthier alternatives such as whole grains, vegetables and fruits, and helps to stimulate the release of serotonin, the body’s feel good chemical. However, unlike healthy carbs, sugar is a simple carbohydrate that satisfies our hunger and provides an energy boost but doesn’t last long. We just end up craving more of the quick high.

The good news is experts say there are tricks we can do to reduce our cravings for sugar. One example is to add protein-rich foods along with a sweet treat to help us feel fuller for a longer period and stabilize blood sugar levels. Try a cup of Greek yogurt with high-fiber berries for your mid-afternoon snack as it offers both a sweet taste and protein, and is low in fat and carbs. In addition, fruit is a tasty way to increase fiber.

Another tip is to eat at set times and add healthy snacks in-between meals. This helps reduce cravings for foods that fill us up quickly but do not have much nutritional value. It also can curb the habit of over-eating by making us feel fuller longer. To make food more appealing and sweeter tasting without sugar, try adding cinnamon. Studies show it may help control blood sugar levels by evening out high and low dips.

Other suggestions include drinking more water throughout the day including right before a meal. Experts recommend rather than trying to totally eliminate sugar from your diet to treat yourself to a few bite-size cookies or a premium dark chocolate truffle but keep the calorie count under 150. Getting enough sleep every night is important; and if you are craving a sweet, distract yourself by getting outside and taking a walk.

If you are looking for exceptional independent or assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge may be your answer. We are a vibrant 55+ community in Peoria, AZ with well-designed Casitas and suites ranging from 404 to 1236 square feet. There can be a number of reasons an adult child begins managing the finances of their elderly parent or another senior loved one. It may be the unpleasant surprise of finding a stack of unopened, unpaid bills. It could be noticing their confusion with making plans and/or carrying out those plans. Whatever the reason, once a parent is no longer willing or able to handle their finances, it might be time to step in and lend a hand.

Millions of Americans provide some level of caregiving duties to an elderly relative including managing their finances. If it is now up to you, experts say take the time to get organized. After that your first priority should be to pay overdue bills. If bills are paid online, make sure the amounts going out are in-line with costs. Check credit card statements and bank accounts to ensure there are no unexpected or unnecessary charges. If the person has moved into a senior living community, cancel payments to cable service, etc.

If your role as money manager will be on-going, having your loved one’s mail forwarded to your home will make things easier. If they don’t have automated payments set up for things like taxes and other payments, set it up. Becoming a durable Power of Attorney will allow you to add your name to a joint account. It will remain in effect even if the person loses the ability to make their own decision due to a disease such as Alzheimer’s.

In order to avoid questions and any conflict, be transparent in all of your transactions. Keep a complete record of expenditures and receipts as well as income. Include the person in the decision making as much as possible; and if you or your parents have any questions, consult an elder care attorney or accountant.

At MorningStar of Arvada, we provide an engaging, vibrant atmosphere where seniors safely and comfortably age in place. Along with smartly-designed suites in a range of floorplans and configurations, our independent living and assisted living offers luxury amenities, tasty meal service, and purposeful wellness programs and activities. Why Assisted Living is Often Better Than Living Alone

November 13, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Many older adults are pleasantly surprised to discover that moving to an assisted living community is not the worst thing to happen to them.  In fact, statistics show that for many seniors it is a healthier, more agreeable alternative to living alone.  The reason some seniors are initially reluctant to make the move is that they are unaware of the significant changes that have occurred in senior living over the years especially in terms of care options and amenities.

Today’s communities like MorningStar at Golden Ridge offer assisted living that is geared toward meeting aging adult’s physical, emotional, spiritual and wellness needs.  Also, for many seniors, offered a better choice for those who require help in their daily lives than receiving in-home care services.  This is because assisted living communities offer 24/7 care and provide the security of knowing help is not far away in the event of an emergency.

For seniors living alone, assisted living provides the opportunity for socializing whether it is with planned activities or in common areas designed to encourage relaxed interactions.  Even if you are someone who values your privacy, community living offers the benefit of private suites with the comfort of having others around.

Another reason you may want to consider is that communities such as MorningStar are designed for the mobility and safety of seniors who may not be as sturdy on their feet as they once were.  To modify your own home to accommodate physical limitations can be quite expensive.

At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we also provide scheduled transportation and planned outings to a variety of places such as shopping, parks or cultural events.  Furthermore, for many older adults cooking and preparing meals is difficult and we solve that problem by providing tasty, nutritional daily meals.  Please contact us to set up a tour to determine if assisted living may be the right decision for you or your loved one.

MorningStar at Golden Ridge’s foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care in Peoria, AZ.  Please contact us or visit our website to learn more.

Caring for a Person With Alzheimer’s Disease

November 11, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease can be a time-consuming job. As the disease is progressive and symptoms worsen over time, the person’s needs also evolve. Things they used to do for themselves may no longer be possible or safe. Moreover, experts say like many older adults, a person with Alzheimer’s is likely to experience health changes over time. Therefore, it is important he/she continues to get routine checkups with their primary care physician as well as with any specialists they may be seeing.

The National Institute on Aging (NIH) says some of the problems caregivers should look for are signs of fever, or sickness like the flu or pneumonia. They say a fever could be signs of infection, dehydration caused by lack of fluids, heat stroke or even constipation. When taking a person’s temperature, use a digital thermometer rather than a glass one as the person might bite down on the glass and break it. Let their doctor know right away if they do have a fever. To help prevent serious illness from flu or pneumonia, have the person get a yearly flu shot and a pneumonia vaccine if recommended.

Dehydration can occur in people with Alzheimer’s as they may forget to drink fluids throughout the day. Caregivers should look for signs of dry mouth, dizziness and rapid heart rate. Experts say dehydration can even cause hallucinations; however, they are also a symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

As the disease progresses, the person will most likely need help brushing their teeth. It is important to look for any sores in the mouth or oblivious signs of dental problems.

NIH cautions caregivers to be on the lookout for signs of pain as the person may not have the ability to tell you. They recommend watching the person’s face for outward signs of pain, or sudden changes in their behavior such as yelling or striking out. If you are not sure what is happening, call their doctor for help.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar at Golden Ridge offers 35 suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Women’s Bone Health

November 04, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

Endocrinologist Kendall Moseley, MD, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Metabolic Bone & Osteoporosis Center, says most women do not know anything about their bone health. A recent survey from the National Osteoporosis Foundation backs up that sentiment finding around 94 percent of women do not worry about their skeletons. However, they add they should, as one in five women under 30 already have osteopenia, which is a step above full out osteoporosis. The good news is there are things you can do to protect your frame and avoid the things that are not good for bone health.

Experts say our bones constantly break down and rebuild every 10 years resulting in a new skeleton. The problem lies in the fact that after the age of 30, our bodies start to lose more bone than they make. Women’s estrogen levels also begin to drop around 30, which is another protector of women’s bone health.

An unbalanced diet or severely restricting calories in an effort to stay thin or lose weight can be another cause of low bone density; and too much caffeine, salt and alcohol all interfere with retaining calcium, our primary bone builder. Even some medications deplete calcium and include certain anti-depressants and contraceptives so be sure to ask your doctor about side effects of medications you take. It is important for women to include dairy products or foods like beans and nuts to increase their calcium intake. Protein from plants and lean meats are also good ways to get calcium.

Along with a good diet, exercise is an important element of keeping bones strong. While some exercises are better than others, scientists recommend weight bearing exercises like walking and running as good ways to build strong bones. Strength training exercises may be the ultimate bone builder and include things like pushups and squats or kickboxing.

Eggs May be an Important Brain Food

October 28, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains, choline is an essential nutrient our bodies need. Our brain and nervous systems use choline to regulate memory, mood, muscle control and other functions as well as help reduce inflammation. Choline is also used to form the membranes surrounding our body’s cells.

While we make a small amount of choline in our livers, most of it comes from the food we eat. Daily requirements for choline vary depending on age and gender. If a person’s levels drop too low, they may experience muscle and liver damage. Other problems can include deposits of fat in the liver known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] and damage to the liver.

Recent research reports a link between eating eggs, which contain choline, and a reduced risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists say they attribute the potential brain benefits to the choline in the yolk as well as vitamins B-6, B-12, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and lutein. Studies suggest these nutrients may help prevent brain shrinkage and delay cognitive decline. Other foods containing choline include meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products; some types of beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains; and cruciferous vegetables like brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

Drinking coffee may even be good for us as it contains antioxidants. Studies show 3 or 4 cups a day over a long period of time may reduce your risk for diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Blueberries and other dark berries contain anthocyanins with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. The spice turmeric has an active compound called curcumin, which research shows may reduce symptoms of depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

At MorningStar of Arvada, our senior living community provides a full range of amenities, services and people to support and enhance quality of life for our residents. Our best-in-class dining offers meals made with fresh ingredients as well as known brain foods. MorningStar’s wellness programs and activities keep residents engaged and stimulated. The Benefits of Built-in Companionship

October 23, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

As we age, our social circle can start to shrink. We may have lost a spouse and/or siblings as well as good friends to death or illnesses. Our adult children may have moved away. Many of us have left the workforce or are working from home or part-time. In some cases due to failing eyesight or other medical conditions, an older adult may not feel comfortable driving, especially after dusk or in bad weather. All of this can reduce opportunities for socializing.

The DailyCaring website explains, “Loneliness has a bigger negative impact on senior health than many people realize. It can increase the risk of depression, poor nutrition, cognitive decline, and more.” They add that fortunately, there are a variety of ways to prevent loneliness in seniors including assisted living communities.

The friendly social interactions typical in assisted living can also lead to better nutrition as residents in many seniors communities have the pleasure of eating together. Furthermore some studies suggest a steady social life can reduce blood pressure and pain symptoms.

At senior living communities like MorningStar of Arvada, we like to call our convenient opportunities to socialize as “built-in companionship.” Our signature wellness programs and activities are designed around the interests and needs of our residents. They focus on physical, intellectual, spiritual or social connections, which allow residents to stay engaged and productive. If you have an interest that our programs do not address; we encourage you to go ahead and start a club.

Our independent living and assisted living Arvada includes 112 spacious studios, and one- and two-bedroom floorplans to meet the needs of the most discerning seniors. For seniors living with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, our distinct Reflections Neighborhood provides specialized, individualized memory care Arvada, CO families know they can trust. MorningStar at Golden Ridge Offers Assisted Living

October 16, 2024 by Karla A in Assisted Living

If you have been relying on a piecemeal approach to care for your elderly parent’s various needs, you may want to consider moving them into an assisted living community.    If cost is the reason you have not considered community living, you may not be aware that assisted living can be more affordable than in-home care services.  Experts say if you are paying for more than 40 hours of weekly care, all told, assisted living is probably less expensive.

Moreover, the peace of mind you get knowing trained care managers are always available to help navigate changes in your loved one’s health is priceless.  At MorningStar at Golden Ridge, we provide residents a beautiful home along with a lifestyle of comfort and wellbeing.  In addition, our team is committed to caring for seniors and ensuring they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

As an assisted living resident, your parents will have an individualized care plan created just for them after an extensive interview process with our Wellness Director.  It includes an assessment of their current health as well as a full review of their medical history. Additionally, we routinely re-evaluate the needs of our residents and update care plans as needed.  Monthly costs are based on the level of care (we have five levels), along with various auxiliary services, both medical and non-medical, that are priced a la carte.

Our contemporary suites are ready to move into and all new residents need to do is bring their furnishings and personal items. We provide the rest including three daily tasty and nutritious meals, a 24/7 care staff, full-time licensed nurse, scheduled transportation and much more.  And in case you wondered, MorningStar is pet friendly.  Please contact us or visit our website for more information about outstanding senior living in Peoria, Arizona.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.
