Learn More About MorningStar Senior Living of Arvada

April 11, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

At MorningStar Senior Living of Arvada, we proudly offer seniors a range of options including independent living, assisted living, memory care, short-term stays and respite care.

Senior living is a perfect solution for older adults who live alone and are feeling lonely.  Their world may have gotten smaller as they retired from careers or suffered the loss of a spouse or close friends.  Some seniors no longer feel comfortable driving, which can lead to more isolation.  Senior living offers you privacy but now you have the comfort of knowing that people are around when you need them.  Also, you will have the chance to socialize and meet new friends.

Our comfortable independent living features private suites and spacious common areas including a pool.  All of our independent living residents are welcomed to join in with our various community activities and wellness programs, and enjoy our many amenities such as a fitness room, art studio, theatre, chapel, full-service salon, and more. We handle all the maintenance (no more worries about cutting grass or shoveling show), and offer housekeeping, laundry and other services.  Meals are prepared by our Executive Chef and served in our lovely restaurant-style dining room, bistro or outdoor dining deck.  In other words, residents have the freedom to focus on more fulfilling activities like relaxing and enjoying themselves.

MorningStar’s assisted living is designed for those who want to maintain their independence but require some help with their day-to-day personal care activities.  For families searching for assisted living, our community ensures seniors get the help they need when they need it.  Along with our dining services, wellness activities, and onsite amenities, we offer a full range of care services based on an individualized care plan that includes 24/7 care managers, medication management, access to licensed nurses, and more.

Lastly, we provide secure suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments staffed by dementia care specialists who have a deep understanding of the disease.  Our philosophy and approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.” Under a Lavender Sky, our ambition is to thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore.

MorningStar of Arvada represents the finest in senior living with our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing our seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve, we create a true home for residents.  Visit our website for more information about the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada, CO offers.

A New Way to Look at Alzheimer's Disease

April 06, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

While a 2012 survey found that more Americans fear Alzheimer’s disease than they do cancer, many professionals are starting to rethink their attitude toward the disease.  Bill Thomas, a geriatrician who is trying to reframe people’s view on aging, says for many the disease has been “swathed in shame” and stuck in what he calls “the tragedy narrative.”  Without dismissing the challenges of the disease, he and other experts say that it may be beneficial to both caregivers and patients to take an adaptive approach to dealing with Alzheimer’s that is more flexible, spontaneous, and expansive.

Mary Fridley, co-creator of a workshop called The Joy of Dementia (You’ve Got to Be Kidding!), stresses that in spite of the fact that we know dementia to be extremely painful, she feels too much time is spent on medicalizing the disease.  Rather she truly believes “it is an opportunity, if people so choose, to be improvisational, to be silly, to play, to free ourselves from the constraints of truth and knowing and assumptions.”

One study out of Canada supports this premise by reporting that dementia patients’ symptoms declined and their psychologically outlook greatly improved after 12-weeks of visits from “elder clowns” who engaged them with empathy, humor, and improvisation.  Another recent study from Australia found that “dementia-care staff with positive attitudes and ‘person-centered’ strategies felt more competent about their ability to provide care.”

At MorningStar of Arvada, we provide compassionate, individualized care for those with mild to advanced memory impairment.  Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to comfort and heal as we find ways to help residents celebrate life and experience spontaneous moments of joy. If a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, we are here to help, please contact us.

Clinical Trial to Learn if a Healthier Lifestyle Protects Cognitive Function

March 11, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

The Alzheimer’s Association is partnering with the Wake Forest School of Medicine in a new, first-of-its-kind intervention trial called the U.S. Study to Protect Brain Health Through Lifestyle Intervention to Reduce Risk (U.S. POINTER).  The two-year clinical trial wants to learn if lifestyle interventions that simultaneously target multiple risk factors can protect cognitive function in older adults between the ages of 60-79 who are at increased risk for cognitive decline.

The national study hopes to “create a new and healthier ‘normal’ through lifestyle changes.”  While research has already shown that a healthier lifestyle protects our bodies’ overall health, scientists now want to know if it can also protect the health of the brain  from future memory problems such as Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

The U.S. Pointer study is currently being conducted at sites in North Carolina, California, Illinois, Texas and Rhode Island, and is the first study of its kind to be done on such a large group of participants from across the United States.  Additionally, it is part of a worldwide consortium of other similar research including the 2014 Finland study of healthy older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia.  The “FINGER Study” (Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability) reports that “a two-year combination therapy simultaneously targeting physical exercise, a healthy diet, cognitive stimulation, and self-monitoring of heart health risk factors had a protective effect on cognitive function.”

Along with independent living and assisted living, MorningStar of Arvada offers 29 secure memory care suites for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a team of individuals who understands the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

MorningStar of Arvada's Assisted Living May Enrich Your Life

March 04, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

After making the move into assisted living, many residents are surprised at how full their lives become.  And despite their fears about losing their independence by moving into a senior living community, most are pleased to discover that by getting the assistance they need, they are more ready than ever to lead productive lives.

At MorningStar of Arvada, our assisted living offers five levels of care.  Your level of care will be determined after a thorough assessment with our Wellness Director and in agreement with you and your extended family.  For your safety, each assisted living suite is equipped with handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems, and is smartly-designed to accommodate the various needs of our residents.  Assisted living also includes housekeeping and laundry services, trash removal and full access to all onsite amenities.

Our holistic approach to senior living creates an atmosphere filled with love, care and compassion.  We also recognize that it is important for our residents to continue learning and contributing, which is why we offer such a wide range of meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage the mind, body, and spirit.

In addition, many elderly adults who live alone find meal prep to be difficult and often resort to frozen meals or fast food. When living at our beautiful community, you can sit back and enjoy the company of your friends and neighbors while you are served beautifully prepared meals restaurant-style.  Moreover, if you are a senior who no longer drives, we take care of that with scheduled transportation.

February 26, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar Senior Living of Arvada provides 29 secure suites devoted to the individualized, specialized care of those with memory impairment caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Our Reflections Neighborhood is designed to accommodate the needs of our residents and encourages and supports their independence while keeping them safe.

Our holistic approach to dementia care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of dementia.  Providing loving support for our residents, we enter with insight and intentionality as we step into their “purple world” and cross over the physical and emotional boundaries that would otherwise separate us.

We also embrace the world of dementia, which begins with accepting the diagnosis, as difficult as this can be.  Utilizing MorningStar’s extensive experience, we have developed a deep understanding of the brain disease, regardless of the type of dementia, and embrace the changes needed to ensure the finest care.  This includes embracing our own communication style to calm or stimulate and physically embracing our tender residents as we recognize the power of touch.  However most importantly, we embrace hope.

Lavender Sky’s last component is exploration, and is approached each day with a wide range of purposeful, individualized solutions.  Acknowledging that the essence of the person lies beneath the fog of the disease, we explore a person’s life, history and preferences to create a personalized care plan.

At MorningStar of Arvada, we also feel it is our job to help support our residents’ families.  Along with education, we show them how to follow our lead and enter into the world of their loved ones.  Please contact us for more information about our experienced, compassionate memory care.

The Food We Eat or Don't Eat May Affect Our Risk for Alzheimer's

February 15, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Several studies are showing links to our dietary habits and our risk for Alzheimer’s.  The Mayo Clinic reports that a hybrid of two diets, the DASH diet that helps reduce high blood pressure and the Mediterranean diet that improves heart health, may protect our brain health.

Known as the "MIND" diet, which is short for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, the diet consists of lots of natural plant-based foods while limiting red meat, saturated fat and sugar.  Based on observational studies, research suggests that following the MIND diet can “reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease by up to 53 percent as well as slow cognitive decline and improve verbal memory.”

One category of food at the top of the list is green leafy vegetables with a recommendation of at least six servings a week in dishes such as salads.  The diet also includes one serving of other vegetables daily.  MIND’s primary fruit is to eat berries at least twice a week.  Red meat is reduced to less than four times a week, cheese to less than one serving per week, while poultry and fish consumed twice or once a week respectively.  Other recommended proteins include nuts and beans.

Oil should be mainly from Olive Oil and butter or margarine reduced to less than a tablespoon a day; and fried or fast food eaten less than once a week.  MIND includes a glass of wine a day but limits pastries and sweets to less than five times a week.   The Mayo Clinic says study results also found you do not have to strictly follow the diet to gain benefits.  For example, “adults in the study who followed the diet most closely (an average score of 9.6 points out of 15) saw the biggest drop in their Alzheimer's risk, the ones who scored in the middle (7.5 points) still cut their risk by over a third.”

At the MorningStar of Arvada senior living community, our many services and amenities include 5-Star dining.  Our delicious meals are prepared largely from scratch and include the freshest, healthiest of ingredients.  We offer 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites and another 29 secure memory care suites devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  As a new resident, you will have priority access to the COVID vaccine.   Visit our website to learn more.

Enjoy Life to the Fullest by Adopting a More Positive Outlook

January 25, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Now that we have finally put 2020 behind us and are ready to move forward, why not do it with a more positive attitude?  Experts explain that developing and maintaining positive energy involves “more than merely thinking happy thoughts.”  It should include things like a belief that our problems will work out and that we can expect good results.

The Mayo Clinic divides people’s thinking into the age-old adage of the glass half empty, half full and says that a number of studies show that an optimistic or pessimistic belief can affect many areas of our health and wellbeing.  For example, those with optimistic outlooks tend to manage stress better, which we know can be bad for blood vessels and heart health as well as cause insomnia, anxiety and more.  Being an optimist can increase our longevity, reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and endow us with better coping skills during challenging times.

Experts suggest in order to cultivate more optimism in our day-to-day thinking, we should practice positive self-talk.  This means talking as kindly to ourselves as we do with other people.  They also say it is helpful to be surrounded with positive people and to follow a healthy lifestyle including eating well and getting at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days.  Another powerful tool is to embrace humor.  Let yourself laugh, smile at others and try to find humor even in difficult situations.

At the MorningStar of Arvada senior living community, we specialize in offering carefree retirement years with 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites in various configurations including spacious studios and one- and two-bedroom floor plans.  If a loved one is suffering from Alzheimer’s or a dementia-related disease, we also provide 29 secure suites that are staffed by a team of compassionate dementia care specialists.  Please visit our website for availability and pricing.

How Life May Look in 2021

January 15, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Most of us were happy to say goodbye to 2020, and we all look forward to a better, brighter 2021.  We long to get back to spending time in the company of our loved ones, and while we realize life may be a somewhat “new normal,” we are ready for a more positive future.

A recent article on AARP’s website asks medical professionals to weigh in on the changes we can expect in the coming year along with some of the things that may not change.  One of the first points that experts agreed on is that we will have better treatments available for COVID-19.  Along with remdesiver, which has already been approved by the FDA, there are several other antivirals being tested to determine if they are even more effective.

Another line of treatment includes monoclonal antibodies, which imitate the body's immune response to a disease.   While currently in short supply and only approved for emergency use, doctors hope if they prove effective they will be available to the general public.  Edith Parker, dean of the University of Iowa College of Public Health, believes they may be groundbreaking in terms of treating COVID.  She adds that the development of monoclonal antibodies for COVID-19 “may be one of the positive things that have come out of the pandemic.”

Other positive signs include administering treatments more effectively.  For instance, Luis Ostrosky-Zeichner, M.D., a professor of medicine and an infectious disease specialist with UT Health in Houston, says there may come a time in the near future when a patient is confirmed to have COVID, they will receive a prescription that can be taken at home.

Other hopeful advances are enhanced testing including at-home test kits that will provide results within a few minutes.  Also doctors are learning more and more about how best to treat patients.  Lastly experts say vaccines should be widely distributed by mid-year.  Health professionals caution that what will remain the same is the fact that we will need to still wear masks, wash our hands, and yes, for a while at least, practice social distancing.

MorningStar of Arvada offers the very best in senior living with a unique mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve as we work toward creating a true home for residents amidst a serene setting.  Visit our website for pricing and availability at the most trusted independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada, CO offers.

We Provide Lots of Support during Your Loved One's Move-in Process

January 07, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

MorningStar of Arvada is one of the premier senior living communities in the area and provides the finest independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada offers.  Situated on 1.5 acres and encircled by historic Golden and the nearby Arvada Reservoir, our gorgeous community provides an extensive range of amenities, wellness programs, care services and more.

When a loved one needs more care than they can get in their own home, it may be time to start thinking about a move to assisted living.  If your family is new to the concept of senior living and all it means, please know that MorningStar of Arvada will work with you each step of the way to help you make informed decisions, and make the eventual move-in process easier.

To start with, we understand that for your parent or elderly relative, the move is a major lifestyle transition, which is why we approach each move-in with great sensitivity.  One way we do this is to try and nurture a relationship from the start that reinforces the positive aspects of community life and tries to help the person envision the many possibilities of a new adventure.

Once your family puts down a deposit to secure a chosen suite, our “House to Home” plan goes into full swing.  This starts by collecting pertinent information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move-in including a medical assessment and physician’s care plan for each new assisted living and memory care resident.

On a more practical level, we offer packing tips including what items are most important to bring such as furnishings and personal belongings that are most significant emotionally, nostalgically as well as functionally.  We want the resident’s new “home” to bring them comfort and joy, which is why we suggest if possible to arrange furnishing similar to their prior residence.  Keep in mind; it is especially helpful to those with low vision or cognitive impairment.

This is just a start of the on-going support we extend to new residents and their families.  We are ready to answer any questions you may have and direct you to our website for contact information as well as other pertinent details.  MorningStar of Arvada’s entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time.

Having a Hobby Can Relieve Stress & Anxiety

January 01, 2021 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Experts explain that many of the things we consider to be merely hobbies are not only relaxing but can also be beneficial to our wellbeing, and one example is knitting.  As a recent international survey found, knitting has a “measurable effect on calming anxiety and relieving stress.”  In fact knitters reported feelings of happiness and calm while knitting as well as enjoy the social nature of the activity even though recent events mean it is currently an online community.

Another clinical study involving individuals with eating disorders found that knitting had a significant effect on decreasing their anxiety.  Participants reported a sense of calm along with a lessening of obsessive thoughts and preoccupations.

Researchers believe that just as playing the piano is good for our brains by having the movement of both our hands coordinate; knitting accomplishes much the same thing.  These bilateral (two-sided) movements fire neurons all over the brain, which in turn stimulates a whole host of brain functions that provide numerous benefits.  Through a series of studies, knitting appears to help those suffering from not only anxiety but eating disorders and pain management.  Knitting also offers the satisfaction of creating a warm hat, sweater, baby blanket, or a pair of socks for a loved one or someone in need.

If knitting isn’t your thing, experts say you may want to try journaling to cope with your anxiety.  When you put your feelings in writing, it may help you to gain control of your emotions and to create order in your world of chaos.  It is also a good way to prioritize concerns and problems.  To help you take advantage of random thoughts that come to you throughout the day, carry paper and pen so you can record your feelings while still fresh in your mind.

Some other easy-to-do stress-relievers include learning to cook or experimenting with different recipes.  Becoming serious about photography can in addition be a good excuse to get out in nature.  Doing word puzzles or coloring, swimming, yoga, and walking can also be beneficial.  Just remember that it might take tries to find the perfect hobby or activity for you to do, and it may be a combination of several, but most of all don’t give up.

Visit our website to learn about unsurpassed independent living, assisted living and memory care in Arvada, CO.

Open positions include rewarding jobs that allow you to work closely with our residents and fellow team members such as our Life Enrichment Coordinators.  Here you will help develop activities that keep residents mentally, physically and creatively engaged within the framework of our comprehensive activity program.  You will get the opportunity to know each resident and to discover what they are passionate about as you encourage them to share their talents and join in the fun.

We also have openings for caregiver positions including care managers and medication care managers/QMAPs.  These jobs also allow you to build strong relationships with our remarkable residents, in fact we encourage it.  We feel the better you know the residents you serve; the more likely it is you will know exactly what they need when they need it.    Other openings at our Phoenix communities include food servers, cooks, housekeeping jobs, and more.

In addition to a generous financial compensation package, MorningStar offers a host of other benefits including comprehensive insurance coverage. This includes health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, telehealth coverage, life insurance, and supplemental insurance (disability, accident, critical illness). At MorningStar, we strive to make sure our team members are protected against most of life’s unexpected costs.  Please visit our website for a complete listing of positions, detailed descriptions and online applications.  We look forward to hearing from you!

At MorningStar’s Arcadia, Arrowhead, Golden Ridge & Fountain Hills communities, our unique mission statement: “to honor, to serve, to invest,” sets us apart from other senior living options.  We are committed to a foundation built upon honoring God and valuing all seniors, and are currently recruiting staff with a felt calling to serve seniors.  If you would like to serve, we invite you to visit MorningStar’s Career page for information on a range of positions including housekeeping jobs in Phoenix.

Debunking Common Myths about Diabetes

December 15, 2020 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and is what 90% of Americans with the disease have.  In Feb, 2020, the CDC reported 34.2 million Americans—just over 1 in 10—have diabetes; and 88 million American adults—approximately 1 in 3—have prediabetes. With such a prevalence of the disease, the Medical News Today website explores some common myths surrounding the cause and treatment of the disease.

First one is a misconception that type 2 diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.  While not strictly true, diabetes can be a result of a poor diet that includes too much sugar and leads to obesity, which is a risk factor for the disease.  However to complicate the case, doctors do say there is evidence that suggests a high consumption of soda pop is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, although they are not sure why.

There is also concern that too many people think diabetes is not a serious disease.  This thinking can lead to someone not managing the disease as they should, and result in dangerous complications.  Another myth is that obesity always causes diabetes.   Again medical professionals say while being overweight and obese are risk factor, the CDC’s National Diabetes Statistic Report, 2020, says “11% of people with type 2 diabetes in the U.S. are neither overweight nor obese.”

Managing the disease well plays a huge role in outcomes.  For those who follow a good diet, maintain a healthy weight, control their blood pressure and cholesterol, stop smoking, and stay physically active, usually can avoid dangerous complications.  Doctors also say by following a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, it is not inevitable that those with prediabetes have to develop type 2 diabetes.

At the MorningStar of Arvada senior living community, we are committed to creating a true home that promotes a healthy, engaged lifestyle, while providing security and independence. We offer 112 bright independent living and assisted living suites, with another 29 secure memory care suites in our Reflections’ wing devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  While visiting our website, please read our protocols for dealing with COVID-19 and how we are safely accepting new residents into independent living, assisted living and memory care Arvada, CO families count on.

Worried About Memory Loss? It May be Time to See a Doctor!

December 10, 2020 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

The Alzheimer’s Association recommends that anyone worried about memory loss to make an appointment with their health care provider.  While we all know it is scary just thinking about the possibility of having Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, the Alzheimer’s Association has a list of reasons why it is to your advantage to know.

The process for getting a diagnosis starts with a full evaluation with a healthcare provider that includes your medical history and any medications you are taking as well as a series of mental status tests.  If the initial evaluation indicates problems, your doctor will recommend further physical and neurological exams, diagnostic tests and brain imaging.

One of the top reasons to be evaluated for Alzheimer’s is your symptoms may be from another treatable cause.  If it is determined you have Alzheimer’s, experts explain while there is no cure for the disease, there are treatment options that can lessen the symptoms including memory loss and confusion for a limited time.  Also they say an early diagnosis gives you a better chance of benefiting from treatment.

An early diagnosis also means you may be eligible for clinical trials that could provide some medical benefit.  In addition recent research suggests that certain lifestyle changes such as “controlling blood pressure, stopping smoking, participating in exercise, and staying mentally and socially active, may help preserve cognitive function.”

Perhaps most importantly you will have more time to plan for your future and to do things now, rather than wait.  Planning for the future also helps family members know what your wishes are and prevents future feelings of guilt or arguments over your care.  The Alzheimer’s Association adds that an early diagnosis can save your family and the U.S. Government money spent on care.

MorningStar of Arvada offers independent living and assisted living as well as memory care.  Through a range of resort-style amenities and Life Enrichment programs, residents are offered a quality of life other senior living communities simply cannot match.  Please visit our website to learn more about our community and our dedication to serving others.

A Community with Several Neighborhoods under its Roof

December 05, 2020 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

The MorningStar of Arvada senior living community is a beautiful, safe place to age in place and offers the benefit of being one community with several neighborhoods under its roof.  We start with 112 fully-equipped bright independent and assisted living suites that just need your furnishings and personal treasures in a choice of spacious studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom floor plans (some as large as 1374 square feet).  Our memory care wing has another 29 secure suites devoted to caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia from the onset of the disease right through to the most advanced stages.

To provide the kind of memory care Arvada, CO families can depend on; we begin with a high staff to resident ratio.  We then provide all employees comprehensive training in our “Lavender Sky” program that encompasses our philosophy and approach to memory care and leads to a better understanding of the disease.  In addition along with a whole range of meaningful activities and programs, residents receive full-time non-medical care, transportation, and a meal service geared toward their special needs.  They also receive assistance with the activities of daily living (ADLs) that include dressing, toileting, eating, transferring from a bed or a chair, etc., and more.  All of this is done with the belief that caring for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is our calling—our privilege, as we find ways to celebrate and elevate life.

Moreover if you start out in independent living, you have the comfort of knowing if you later require help with the ADLs, you will get first priority for an assisted living suite.  In fact residents can transfer to Assisted Living or Memory Care, depending on the availability of the desired suite; and if there is any delay, you are welcome to bring in a home care agency in the interim.  And there is no internal Transfer Fee.  Please visit our website for more info.

Assisted living also provides peace of mind if your mom or dad has poor balance or failing eyesight, which can increase the likelihood of a fall, and not having help close at hand can be dangerous.  In addition, if a parent no longer drives, it may be difficult for them to get groceries and other necessary supplies including prescription medications or to see a doctor.

MorningStar of Beaverton’s mission is to provide the best assisted living Beaverton Oregon has to offer. Another thing you will no longer have to worry about is whether mom or dad is getting enough good, healthy food to eat.  MorningStar’s daily meals feature the freshest ingredients and are prepared using the highest quality produce, often homegrown and locally sourced as we know there is nothing like fresh foods to stimulate the senses and the appetite.

Finally, MorningStar wants you to know that during this time of the coronavirus outbreak, our highest priority is the safety and wellbeing of our residents, their families and our staff; and we could not be more vigilant in our defensive approach. We are staying abreast of its real time status and closely following—in many cases, exceeding—guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to ensure the health and well-being of all beneath our roof. Falls are Very Common Among Seniors

August 10, 2020 by Karla A in Healthy Seniors

A fall can result in serious injuries especially for the elderly, who make up the majority of cases, and can take a long time to heal.  Many even lead to permanent mobility issues that limit the person’s freedom.  The CDC reports one in four Americans aged 65+ falls each year, and that an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall every 11 seconds and a senior dies from a fall every 19 minutes.

Experts explain there are several reasons why the elderly are more vulnerable to falling and include medical conditions such as Parkinson’s and heart disease, arthritis, osteoporosis, hypoglycemia, diabetes, and blood pressure fluctuations.  In addition, physical disabilities that affect strength and balance, poor eyesight, inner ear problems, and dehydration can also put a person more at risk for a fall.  Common situations that can result in a fall include wet or recently polished floors, poorly lit areas, rugs not properly secured, stairs, and uneven sidewalks.

There are some changes you can make to fall-proof your home such replacing light bulbs in dimly lit hallways or stairways with higher wattage bulbs.  Clean up clutter and make sure each room in your home has a clear, clean path to walk through and install grab bars and handrails where needed.  Use a non-slip mat in the bathtub or shower and do not wear socks or loose, floppy slippers but rather a good walking shoe with support and cushioning.

If a loved one is unsteady on their feet, talk to their doctor about using a walker or cane.  Also, ask if any of their medications can cause dizziness or light-headedness, and if so, is there an alternative.  Doctors say if not, it is even more important to make the appropriate lifestyle changes.

At MorningStar of Beaverton, our beautiful community is designed to accommodate our residents’ limitations.  All of our spacious private suites come with wall-to-wall carpeting, fully handicapped-accessible bathrooms and emergency call systems. Suites are available in a variety of well-designed floor plans and have details reflective of those found throughout our beautifully appointed assisted living facility.  Please visit our website for more information as well as pricing and availability.
